Recent Issues with Telstra Mobile

I have been with Telstra for quite some time now. Lately, I have noticed slower than usual 4G speed on my Samsung mobile, and more black spots in areas where coverage was never an issue. My wife is also experiencing these issues.

Coincidentally, this is happening at a time when Telstra are moving me (and all customers I suppose) to the most recent plans, resulting in increased monthly costs for me in addition to losing other benefits such as unlimited international calling and other bonuses.

I think the time has come to move to another mobile provider. My work phone is with Vodafone and the speed and coverage is good, even better than Telstra. Anyone here with Telstra experiencing the same issues?

Also, anyone here with Vodafone who can confirm the better coverage and speed? Would you recommend Vodafone? I don't want to move my personal phone to Vodafone just based on my experience with their corporate phone plan.

Lastly, I noticed TPG mobile plans (on the Vodafone network) are better valued than Vodafone plans, even though they now own Vodafone in Australia. If you are with TPG, I am equally interested in knowing more about your experiences with them.

I’m with Telstra, and have noticed the network has been shit lately. Went to watch a movie earlier today, at a local cinema, and had 0 reception (same with wife who is with Telstra)

So you went to a cinema to watch a movie on your phone?

      • It was a rom com showing at the cinema.

Same, I have also noticed this in the cinemas, shopping centres, etc.

You're one of those people glued to their phones during the movie and creating a visual distraction for everyone else?

    • +4

Don't they block mobile phone reception in movie theatres to stop the pests who can't turn theirs off ruining everyone else's enjoyment of the movie? They probably don't, but it'd be a good idea.

You get a mobile signal? Lucky bastard. 3g was ten times better here than the 4G shit they have dished up since they closed it down.Never known such a lying, thieving corrupt org as Telstra. It's disgusting that the govt still relies on them for coverage. The sooner other tech makes their monopolised towers obsolete, the better.Any govt with integrity would lock them out of any future contracts to supply reliable national mobile phone services. Divide the bandwidth up more equally among all other willing capable players & lock Telscam out.

      Should never have been privatised

True, the government has an excellent track record at building and running communications infrastructure after all.

Australia is a large country - what "coverage" are you talking about?

  • I've had no problems with Telstra. I keep my phone on 5G even when at home because wifi gives me bad lag spikes in bullet chess, costing me games. Goddamn Coalition killing the real NBN :(

  • no issues here

  • No issues here. I'm with an optus network provider.

  • My issue is I’ve been in a fizzer of a cyclone and no Telstra network since 3pm yesterday while my partners Optus is doing fine…

It's easy to cherry pick. e.g. putting my friend's postcode into Optus' service status page returns:

Sorry, OPTUS mobile sites and / NBNCO have reported some services in this area aren't working.
Severe weather conditions and power outages are impacting this area, your mobile and NBN services may be interrupted during this time. Our Network team is monitoring and will work on getting the network up and running again, as soon as it is safe to do so. We'll let you know when everything is back in working order.

It's a cyclone after all. I would expect some services to be disrupted regardless of who runs it.

I hope that you all are okay.

I've been with Telstra for quite a while and haven't noticed any slowdowns or new black spots. I switched to Boost late last year and also haven't noticed a difference.

There was a short period of time where one location would often have non-working 5G data though. I'd have to switch to 4G to get it to work.

The issue is likely attributable to the fact that most new phones are equipped with 5G capabilities and utilise 5G-NSA technology, which consumes a substantial portion of the 4G bandwidth in the area.

This issue is expected to worsen over time as the 5G infrastructure layer on the Telstra network remains underdeveloped.

    • Thanks, that might be the issue. I am still on a 4G handset.
