I've upgraded from Gen 1 when these launched and find them an amazing upgrade - especially since the rubber tip airpods don't fit in my ear.

The hardest part about these airpods are the fitment, which you can't try without buying. Airpods Gen 1 are absolutely elite for me, there is genuinely no in ear headphone that fits better than the first gen airpods(or 2nd, whatever they are, the original shape). This shape never fits in my ear and always falls out, they were so bad I have neglected my pair in a draw after the first 3 months of ownership. The pros fit really well but I was never a fan of rubber tips, due to the first gen design falling behind in performance I am now on the pros.
I guess what I am saying with my ramble is they are all solid products that could be great or terrible depending on teh shape of your ear and Apple(and other manufacturers) really need to come up with a cheap/cost free way of properly sizing up the correct shape of earbud. I have found this to be of more importance than actual differentiating features such a sound quality.
you can always try them by buying them from apple directly and return within 7 days. then buy them when they go on sale
but i agree, my airpods 2 were a great fit, using airpods pro 2 which has amazing ANC but doesn't fit in my ear properly , then fall when running within seconds
You can ask to try them in store. Apple will give you a sanitised demo unit and you can play around with the settings and demo the audio quality.
