Chemist Warehouse "Lowest Price Guaranteed" - Price Matched & an Extra 10% off The Price Difference

604

Genuinely had no idea that this was a thing until I saw it on MAA, did some digging and found the actual policy.

So, unlike Bunnings, they don't beat the price by 10%, instead, Chemist Warehouse will match the lower price and then deduct an additional 10% of the price difference, rather than 10% off the total price itself.

So how this would work in theory is; if Chemist Warehouse sells a product for $50 and you find it at another pharmacy for $45, they'll match the $45 price and give you an extra 10% off the $5 difference, making your final price $44.50.

At Chemist Warehouse if you find a cheaper price on the same item at another Australian Registered Pharmacy or Australian Registered Retailer we will match it and give you 10% off the difference.

The price matching policy is limited to the retail limit applicable or a maximum quantity of three of each product.

In Store:
If you would like to price match in store, please bring a catalogue from the other retailer containing valid proof of their price. The discount will take place during the time you purchase the product in store and our staff may choose to contact the competitor to verify their price before granting the price match.

Online:
If you would like to price match online, please send us a direct link of the product on the competitors’ website it is being advertised on and your order number. Please note we require notification of your price match request within 24 hours of placing an order with us.

You will need to pay for your order in full, however after your price match has been approved you will receive a refund for the matched price.

Unfortunately, we are unable to process a price match for purchases made through Click & Collect or Fast Delivery.

Exclusions:
Our price matching policy excludes international orders and offers that are exclusively online. This policy cannot be applied to products at the other company if they are:

  • out of stock
  • short dated
  • on clearance or discontinued
  • a part of a promotional offer e.g. buy one get one free
  • purchases made through Click and Collect
  • purchases made through Fast Delivery
  • products sold by Marketplace seller unless otherwise specifically disclosed by Marketplace seller

Chemist Warehouse reserves the right to deny any price matching claims if they do not meet the above criteria.

Enjoy!

Genuinely curious if anyone knew about this?

    • +3

Been doing it for a while

    • For years…I think every since CW was a thing.

    • Did it yesterday

    • +2

Yes, but it's only worth focusing on the price match as it's only an additional 10% off the difference, which is miniscule. Kinda mean remembering they made $438M pre-tax profit in 6 months (thru end of 2024).

      • +1

Definitely mean. Woolies and Coles are getting raked over the coals for having a duopoly and price gauging customers (not that I side with the supermarkets) but I reckon the ACCC should really look at the retail pharmacy industry too. In my opinion, CW has a massive monopoly and doesn’t treat suppliers very fairly

    • +2

I dont think staff knew about this, went in at xmas time to PM cheaper perfume and all they did was discount the difference

Next time I can't be bothered.. I'll go with the company and their better pricing

      • +9

This is the way. Reward those that are active in discounting, not the ones trying to undermine them.

    • Yeah use it for partners rather expense face wash and disposable nappies.

      • +3

        Your partner wears nappies?

        • +1

          Don't kink shame.

    • I used it on this https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/858925

      To get 90cent original source

    • +17

I know about this ages ago and its a bloody joke

Firstly you have to jump through hurdles to prove the point

Then you only get back 10% of the difference!

So if $2.00 cheaper you get a grand 20c back

Seriously its just not worth the effort!

      • It's only worth it if it's an easier store to get to.

      • YMMV.

Sometimes Amex allows you to buy 20% off GCs. If you're in good health, you can really only buy staples like toothpaste, etc. So useful to price beat Coles/WOW hilo pricing at the low.

you have to jump through hurdles to prove the point

If it's a valid one, it's very easy. Even if it's not really valid, you might still be able to do it…. some people like to test the limits.

      • So if $2.00 cheaper you get a grand 20c back

        Nope, it's $2.20.

      • Agreed, it's an absolute fk around to get them to do this, really not worth it.

Found out the other day when the person in front did it. So I did it too and saved myself $5. Will be doing it more frequently.

    • So you found something $50 cheaper ?

      • No. The other store had it for $5 cheaper than CW, so I guess I actually saved $5.50 versus CW prices. The other store was hours away and I wasn't going to pay over $10 delivery, but CW was a 5 min drive away. There was another store with it even cheaper (also too far away for me to click and collect and again delivery fee would have killed the saving) but it was an online only price and they said they don't price match online only offers.

        • +1

Im surprised they agreed to price match given the other store was not in your area.
          Thats usually a knock-out blow

          • @Dr Phil: I was surprised too but looking at their policy they shouldn't knock it back just because the store is out of your area. That doesn't seem to be an exclusion criteria.

          • +2

@Dr Phil: I have had no issues price matching with stores in Vic or Qld at stores near sydney. They are also not very fussed about the store with which we price match either. As long as there is a physical address to the store they price-match.

I had the ocassional manager who wanted to call up the other store to find the price / stock but most of the time it has been a good experience.

      • Its a very fair question

Dont know why people here downvoted you.

    • Nice! What did u buy

  • I knew about this five or six years ago.

    • Damn never heard of it till today

      Howd u find out?

  • +16

I've tried a few times over the years at different stores but gave up after realizing it wasn't worth the effort. They always need to call a manager for the price match, which means waiting on the line. On top of that, they limit how many you can buy at the matched price. In my case, I was trying to buy five, but they wouldn't allow it. It just feels like they don’t really want to honor the price match.

    Just sharing my experience.

    • Damn its really inconvenient

Like that hj wrap for $3.50 cheap but cbf 1 per order

    • Lol.. you something, cheaper elsewhere, they honour it, but wont let you buy 5? Is that the problem?

  • Does this apply to all products, such as perfumes?

  • +7

The only time that I tried this was to match the price for a product with Woolworths. I had the price up on my phone. I was told that they would have to call the store to make sure that it was in stock. I had visions of myself standing at the checkout for 10+ minutes waiting for this process to complete as a Woolies staff member went to the appropriate shelf and returned to the phone to verify the price and stock level. I said not to bother as it would be quicker for me to walk 50 metres to Woolworths and take it off the shelf there myself.

  • +6

Chemist Warehouse and this price match policy can be like pulling out teeth sometimes. Honestly, not even worth the anxiety

    • Depends a lot on the location. In the Brisbane CBD it was ultra easy and quick. They'd even do multiple items in one transaction with only showing a website on the phone.

In Newcastle they always check the store location, shipping costs, and glare at you the whole time.

    • +2

Feels like you're aiming for the express exit at Sydney International customs with 13 annoyed customers in line behind you. But I do it every time, even for a cent.

  • What’s the use of price match if it won’t match lower price by another store just because the other store has put a discount on the item? They will only price match full price of the item from other store even if they have a discount/sale on it currently.

    • They do price match items that are on discount on the other site. They don't if it is stock clearence or closing down sale etc.

      • +2

I have tried with 2 different stores and both refused to price match an item that was on sale on another site, not stock clearance or closing down sale, simply on sale. I rang their customer service and their rep read these price match exclusions saying they don’t price match items on sale.

  • +2

Chemis staffs are anal also as their manager. They make you look bad to block the line. The manager sometimes was phamarcist. Just avoid at all cost.

    • +1

Making the line long is their error and their problem. You are simply a customer trying to take them up on their offer. Don’t feel guilty.

      • Issue is that you still get no answer from the Pharmacist even after you showed them their policy.
10% the difference sometime was just only 1 -2 dollar, lol.

        • I’ve never had a issue price matching at CWH. They can get all the managers they want, doesn’t bother me.

    • The manager will always be a pharmacist.

  • +2

only 10% off the difference is not worth it

    • It’s more for convenience than anything.

      • +3

sure but always try to support the business that had the lower price first

        • +1

Unless they're too far away and their delivery fee kills any discount.

  • +2

They don't mention prescriptions being excluded do they? Because all of their prescriptions that I've ever checked are more expensive than healthylife. Not sure I'd bother chasing down for a <$1 refund though.

    • I have had about 80% success price matching prescriptions.

      • I have had very poor luck price matching. They always behave as it was coming out of their pockets. I have found that healthylife does real cheaper prices than chemist warehouse and they deliver for free if its a prescription. I order packs of 2 or 4 at a time and often for a brand, thats cheaper than generic prescriptions. And often they send the same brands for generic as chemist warehouse. Plus no waiting for 20 minutes as it gets delivered to your home.

    • Interesting, healthylife is real competition. The Pharmacy Guild seems concerned. https://www.pharmacyitk.com.au/woolworths-pharmacy-partnersh…

The Guild lobbying has made it impossible for an independent pharmacist to setup their own business, restricting the number of licenses so one needs to pay several million dollars to become a proprietor.

  • +2

Good luck price matching. They would make you feel like criminal.

    • +2

I don't really care, they put up the deal. They should be prepared to deal with it.

  • +1

I have known about this for some time, but you have to jump through hoops for them to price match and they will look for every excuse under the sun not to honor it.

  • I tried to get a price match one time from a cheaper item at woolworths or coles

They said we do not price match a supermarket only other chemists

    • +1

All part of the fun :)
Woolworths is an Australian registered retailer, operating primarily as "Woolworths Group Limited" which is a publicly listed company based in Australia, making it a fully registered Australian retail entity.

    • guess it depends on the store / staff. Have had price matched with Colesworth multiple times.

  • I shamelessly do this with silicon lube in bulk. Just be standin at the counter while they callthe manager to check and approve it.

  • +1

good to know but this is cheapo from Chemist warehouse considering the billions they are making in profit year on year.

  • I was told by an employee that they wouldn't match products if they were on special, only at the regular sale price, like a year ago? Is "clearance" synonymous with sale in this case or was she just full of it?

    • you can price match products even if they're on sale - in chemist or any other store. If it was only at regular price then everyone would price match it. However, if it is a clearance item then typically can't apply it because of policy (but they can physically still do it and put it in but not worth the hassle if they say they can't - so depends who you get)

      • +1

So she put one over me, haha. Appreciate it!

  • +1

Pricks always tell me the price match has to be in the same State.

  • +5

Not worth the hassle in trying to prove the offer that is available elsewhere.. unless you happen to need to go to CW. I'd rather go to the place that offer the discount, which usually has a shorter queue.

  • +1

I’ve done this with deodorant, toothpaste and vitamins.

You can tell by the look on their faces they get annoyed because it’s a long process for them behind the counter to put it through and holds up the line.

  • Been doing this for few years already .They generally pricematch/beat after checking if the competitor has a physical store and not online only.so if you see something sold on amazon for cheaper or in some cases where they claim to be exclusive seller of a product but being sold by someone else as well for cheaper, they wouldn't accept that

  • +3

Dodgy price-matching policy, and they hide kids in-store who talk to you like they own the place, refusing all price-matching requests at their discretion. If they do match, they act like they’re doing you a massive favour, and you should be grateful. Avoid!!!

Also, the moment you step into the store, they assume you’re a thief and treat you like a criminal. The online team ships nearly expired stock, and when I complained, they responded, “Just buy enough for one month. If you buy more than that, it’s not our problem, and we do not exchange or refund.”

Shocking!!! Avoid this company at all costs, they’re no longer the cheapest and act like they own the market.

    • They do own the market, that's the reason they act like this. They own around 20% of Pharmacy stores but take more than 50% of industry revenue. That's a bigger share than Coles/Woolworths have in the supermarket industry.

    • This is abit like the buy Australia made argument and boycott Chinese product. At the end of the day, ppl just go to where ever that cheapest and most convenient. Chemist warehouse have both most of the time. It’s what Kmart and Bunnings does as well.

  • I had no idea about this but, like others have said, if it's only 10% on the price difference, it really isn't worth it.

  • Had no price match issues with CW, but they do have limits like 2 items per product. The worst is TGG and HN, they simply say no with no much excuse.

    • +1

sounds like they did you wrong because you can have maximum quantity of three of each product.

Former Senior Chemist Warehouse Employee here

It's a bit strange on how they coded this system. Every chemist warehouse will slightly differ in terms of experience and it also depends who you get.

For me - I applied them myself with no hassle, however, there is no clear policy stating all the scenarios which is why I said each chemist will be slightly different - the main things I ran into worth noting is that:

    • It's an automated system where we'd input the price to beat
    • From experience, some items I price matched don't ACTUALLY discount 10% for some dodgy reason, it might do around 5%, so do your math if you want to be more accurate and see if its worth it - unfortunately it cannot be changed by floor staff even if you do the math correctly; if you care that much then tell the manager and see if they can do it manually (Formula = 10/100*PRICE)
    • Competitor must be a physical store in Australia - doesn't matter where or who, as long as it's a physical store, they can apply it - this one is a grey area because each store/staff is not informed properly - because there's also no policy that specifically states this from what I know so you might have to fight with logic.
    • Obviously it can still discount an item that's on sale in-store or on sale at another store - that's the point of it
    • Can price match medicines and perfumes still - but prescriptions that are S4 and above will not price match but again will depend on the manager but I don't see how this will work because they need a price from the competitor
    • +1

Thanks for your insight. Most of the staff appear unhappy when asked to price match. It seems to be a lot of hassle for them. Some even said they don't price match.

From experience, some items I price matched don't ACTUALLY discount 10% for some dodgy reason, it might do around 5%…

I saw the 5% difference discount instead of 10% but didn't query the discrepancy. It sounds dodgy.

Competitor must be a physical store in Australia

I've encountered staff from different stores stating:

      • It must be a physical store in the same state.
      • They need to see the physical catalogue e.g. from Goodprice Pharmacy. They don't accept the online catalogue.
      • They have to ring the store to make sure the item is in stock although the store has a website that shows stock availability. They cannot price match when the store is not open e.g. Priceline Pharmacy that shuts early.
Staff rang Coles to check on stock availability. I only did it once and shopped at Coles next time.
      • They cannot price match Chemist Warehouse website or another Chemist Warehouse store. Store prices usually match the prices online or another store but there was one time, it was more expensive for a common supplement. It wasn't an online only special but the pharmacist manager said they don't price match themselves. They only price match another retailer. I went to a different Chemist Warehouse and paid the same price as advertised online.
      • +1

Insane how different each store can be. I've heard plenty of different stories from different customers and it doesn't sit right with me sometimes. It definitely really does depend on which store you go to. My stores was very lenient and when I earned manager permissions, it was very smooth for all my customers.

It must be a physical store in the same state.
Massive grey area, I can see why they want it in the same state but I've been told by my manager that any state is fine - so definitely depends on the store.

They need to see the physical catalogue e.g. from Goodprice Pharmacy. They don't accept the online catalogue.
Sounds ridiculous - if its online exclusive then yes, but if it applies in-store, it doesn't make sense to me because you would just go to that store and give your money elsewhere. Physical and online catalogue should be the same price anyway.

They have to ring the store…
They have the choice to do this as it states on their FAQ, so we never did it unless it was super low or dodgy, but if the store is under d***head management then I can see why they would HAVE to do it.

They cannot price match Chemist Warehouse website or another Chemist Warehouse store.
Definitely cannot price match themselves because all the prices will be the same across all Chemist Warehouses. It's most likely they forgot to put the sale ticket up and just didn't go the extra step to check whether if it was on sale for you or not. Whatever price it says online, will be the same in-store. If not, the price should be honoured to what it says online at the time or what it says on the ticket if its on the shelf.

    • +1

Items won’t discount 10 %. If the item is $80 and the competitor is $76. The item will discount 40 cents off the competitor price, to $75.60. .

      • Exactly! It took me a while to figure out but it's pretty deceiving

  • Real pain to put through, waiting in line and then the person calls the manager who is usually a busy pharmacist comes down 5 minutes later and does it.

  • When Priceline had $10 cleanser promotion, last year I got Chemist Warehouse to pricebeat with no problem. This year, my sister asked (another) Chemist Warehouse which was closer to her at the time to price beat certain cleanser for $10 and they refused. Even worse, they took ALL those cleansers off the shelf and hid it in the storage area. So dodgy!

  • +2

I tried to just price match last time. It was $2.50 shower gel. I got told they don't price match items that are on sale elsewhere.
I went a 2nd time so I could deal with a different staff member and got told the same thing. I pointed out their policy and they said to make a complaint if I wasn't happy. I made a complaint and got told the store has the right to not match an item for any reason and it was completely up to the individual store.

    That's my experience.

  • personally i dont have good experience to price match at Chemist Warehouse. Either they told u they dont do it, or they won't give you a pleasant look as if you owe them big time doing this. They are by worst to price match unwillingly even it is in their policy.
