  • think the benefit of these bacteria is they are live cultures

dry em into powder and put em in a capsule and they are…?

Freeze-Drying (Lyophilization) – The probiotics are dried using a process that removes water while keeping the bacteria in a dormant state. This allows them to be shelf-stable without refrigeration.

bacteria are not tardigrades tho, that sounds a lot like marketing copy to me

        • Would you reckon something like yakult is better? Or yoghurt?

          • @ATTS: i'm not across the research tbh, there was some question as to whether these bacteria can survive the digestive tract much less proliferate (i think the ideal is they reach the small intestine and there's some question as to how likely it might be that they do)

i'd be more inclined to hooking into the yakult type products, i eat yoghurt on the daily but again, not convinced it's benefitting my gut flora

            • @0jay: Thanks

Yes i heard about the theory the gut microbiome can sometimes not absorb the probiotic strain thing

And yakult has sugar. I didn't want to be drinking it if no improvement in the gut flora!

              Edit

Y do they add sugar to yakult? Is it due to bad taste?

              • @ATTS: Isnt there a sugar free option?

                • @specwarop: Theres light version, though tink still addedd sugar

              • @ATTS: if you can tolerate dairy, greek yoghurt's got fairly minimal sugar and a good source of calcium, i also find it quashes my urge to eat butter and cream

i think the only guaranteed method for flora adjustment is fecal implants

Edit: I think consensus is around pickled products offering maximal benefit to gut flora, it's more around offering an ideal nutrition for existing gut bacteria (fibre likewise is good for this)

                • @0jay: Tjanks for the recommendation.

I think fecal implants are dirty lol. Its the one how that doctor user someones feces into a pill and swallowed it right?

Oh yes fermented foods like kim chi and sauqraut

Btw how do you apply the right fermenting techniques to build that beneficial bacteria?

Like i heard people use ACV but not sure regarding the correct techniques for diy fermented foods

It works but not for all species. Notice these don't have the range of bacteria you find in ethical nutrients or inner health products you find in the fridge.

The bigger question is if it is even worth taking these when there are much better formulations available

Ever made beer mate? Yeast comes dry in a packet.

      • yeast is fungi, yeh?

    These are so useless

    • +2

      why

    • Not sure why you get downvoted, many gp are now saying supplements are useless when it’s good, and straight up bad for the liver in some cases. If you take ANY supplement you should check your liver function right now. You might be surprised of the results

      • I heard magnesium is bad now, what are your thoughts?

      • would you class vitamin c as a supplement?

      • +1

Each supplement is different. Vitamins, minerals, probiotics, natural or organic compounds all have different effects on your body and liver. Don't generalise, it is dangerous to be ill-informed.

      • "These are bad for the liver", then proceeds to drink 10 beers a week

    • Depends who's taking it and for what?
      - I have a middle aged patient that uses it to reduce acne along the jaw line. worked within 3 weeks.
      - I have a patient that takes it to reduce chronic pain.
      - I have multiple patients that take it for their constipation.
      - I have a patient that takes it for her anxiety.
      - I have another patient that takes it for her skin conditions.

Depends on the user really and for what conditions. You can downvote me as much as you want. All I can speak about is the interactions with my patients.

      • you’re giving a quasi clinical vibe there cowbye, what’s your qualification and by th by, have y ever heard tell of placebo effect?

      • Yeah right. Are you even an actual doctor?
