Around $1000 Laptop That Will Handle Editing 4K Video and Be Able to Run MS Flight Sim

Hi all, I grew up in a different era and I'm not fully across all the different types of computers, CPUs, memory, etc. Your help in giving me advice to buy a new laptop would be greatly appreciated.

I have around $1000 to spend. I have a lot of 4K videos that I want to process, but my current computer is so slow and only does something like 2 frames per second when I export it from Premiere. I don't need a laptop that is ultra quick, just something that will output the files a little more quickly.

I would also like it to run MS Flight Sim without stuttering frames.

Do I need to look for a certain processor and video card. How much memory would I need?

Thanks in advance.

So you want to edit 4k video and ms flight Sim at the same time or in separate occassion?

OP might crash if they try to multitask like that.

    • On separate occasions :-)

Laptops tend to have inferior graphics cards to their desktop equivalents. This can extend to CPUs as well. They cannot dissipate heat very well and also tend to prioritise power consumption (both go hand in hand). If I could avoid buying a laptop, I would.

just look for any sales of laptops within your budget with a graphics card… any current or last gen device you buy will do fine

Is a MacBook air or pro able to do these things?

any gamer would know gaming on a macbook is asking for trouble.

      • I genuinely don't know. I'm not an apple person.

  • Does it need to be a laptop? As @vorsprung has mentioned above, you're going to have a much better time with a desktop than a laptop, and a $1,000 budget for your desired use cases won't get you very far.

If you're needing to buy a laptop and buy it now, look for any that has a dedicated GPU i.e. an RTX 40X0

32GB RAM is preferable for heavy editing workloads and MSFS but you won't find any current gaming laptop specced with that amount of RAM for $1K - just upgrade and add in more RAM after the fact.

    $1000 laptop. Yea nah.

  • Editing 4K video is mainly on the processor.

You can get a good $1000 laptop with Ryzen that can edit 4K videos reasonably well but it won't come with enough graphics power for MS Flight Sim.

  • As others have said, if you can drop the laptop requirement you will have better options. However, this assumes that you already own peripherals, a monitor etc. With that budget I'd probably build an am4 system based around at least a 5700 cpu (8 or more cores). For the gpu the intel b580 is currently the best value at around 400 - 450 and should run games well and provide decent video editing capabilities too.

  • when it came to 4k editing and simulation things, I would reckon PC over laptop, especially upgrading PC is much easier than upgrading Laptop, and with that 1000ish to spend, you could easily get 4070 + 7th Ryzen CPU without Monitor, etc.
But if the case 1000ish cover all of it, that is impossible whether with Laptop or PC

  • I went with a exxier Lenovo Legion 5 with a 4060-$2399 at JB, so definitely not under your $1000 limit but great for MS Flight Sim.
