This is my First post so please be gentle.

You can get a single unit for $62.99 but you can add Mercusys AC1300 and make the effective price $59.19, and then return the adapter to get final price of $50.40.
I bought this 2 days ago for double the price but Amazon is idiot (and nice) engouh to return the existing and let me order a new one (instead of just refunding the difference).
Seems to be a solid router, can potentially run OpenWrt(openwrt.org) with a little bit of work. (Appears to be V1.2, not officially supported by OpenWrt)
If you receive a v1.2, you will need to follow this guide

with that many antennas id expect wifi on the moon

    • +2

How many antennas should our next model have. YES!

    • I wonder if sometimes antenna size and number could just be a gimmick. You could put big antennas on any router.

      • need to read fine print as to how many transmitters it’s has on 2.4 and 5 ghz .

  • Can I get two and set up a mesh network to replace my current TP LINK Decos M5? I am running 4 of these.

    • +1

That might be an overkill. If m5 supports easymesh could you mix and match with one of these?

      • So one MR90X can replace four Deco M5s?

        • +3

One mr90x and one m5 on the least coverage area if you don't have ethernet backhaul.

Alternatively openwrt 802.11s as mentioned by stephendt if you managed to get two before they sold out at that price.

          • @zxcvb: Damn..had two in the cart for I think $100 then was onto something else and then they're gone lol
            Thanks anyway.

            • @beOson: Its ozb, buy first and think later. Plus it's Amazon you can cancel or even return for free unopened plus at that you can onsell for $100 or so..

              • @zxcvb: Haha yeah I know it's ozb, I am just a bit lazy these days when I have no real issues using my current 4x Deco M5 setup vs having to go through a new setup and potentially reconnecting every existing device to the new WiFi network once done.

                • @beOson: Oh isn't it just a swap with the same ssid and security key? Do you have custom setup with the m5s?

                  • @zxcvb: So as long as the same ssid and password are used then I'm all good? Sorry I haven't touched my wifi/NBN for ages..

                    • @beOson: Yes exactly. Typically if your existing system doesn't contain any specific configuration like fixed ips, dhcp assignment/reservation, firewall rules etc.. Then it's as simple as setting the same ssid and security key, and restarting the setup and if required power cycle the devices which likely won't be required at all.

Yeah it works great with 802.11s mesh on OpenWrt

      • I see, so have to use OpenWrt.

  • Great price. Upvoted.

  • This is an amazing price. Good find

  • has openWRT support this router!

  • Thanks OP - a very good deal, just what I was looking for!

  • Ordered one. I have to stop looking at Ozbargain… too many routers.

    • +1

      Still need to OZB until
      Too many shoes
      Too many headphones
      Too many TVs
      Too many smart IoT devices

  • Won't let me add to cart

  • +5

Fantastic deal. I recently added a much easier guide to the OpenWrt forums on how to flash OpenWrt - it's not "easy", but it's also not hard for anyone who is patient and has some technical experience. Mine was a v1.2 and it works great. Easily the best bang for buck router by far.

  • Looks like I got in just in time. Discount reducded to 18% now.

    • +1

      Amazon AU stock sold out.

The 18% discount is for stock sold by PCLIVE.

  • +2

Went to grab one but looks like it got OzBargained. Great Deal if you managed to snag one!

  • Showing $137.90 for me. Prime user

  • +1

Does it have any antennas on it?

    • Negger didn't get the sarcasm I guess

      • Too much heavy lifting for their brains I guess

  • +1

    Gone back up

  • Cheers OP! Managed to snag one in time before the price rise

  • +1

Damn, wish i got it before ozbargained.

  • Great first post OP. OZbargained in minutes!

  • Is the AX3000 any good for a couple dollars less?

    • +2

Fairly sizeable difference in hardware specs. The MR80X also has no Openwrt.
But probably ok if you're just using it as a basic router.

      • For a standard internet user, multiple streaming devices, smart devices such as lights and speakers would the MR80X suffice and can it be used as a modem? What is being missed out on from the MR90X? Have always just gone with the supplied modem and feel like there's lots to learn.

        • For the average user, probably no difference at all. It's a router, not a modem so you'll need to connect it to a modem if required (e.g. FTTN, mobile phone).
If you're not using openwrt, then the biggest differences are: 1) no 2.5G ethernet port and 2) it's AX3000.

  • Anyone got one willing to sell for a bit higher than the listed price in the deal?

  • +1

    Damn. Missed out

  • Great first post! Really good deal for the price.

  • Damn that sucks I missed this.
    Needed to buy one today.

    "hello there"

  • Be wary of routers on Amazon TP-Link owns mercury brand and all the tplink stock we ordered was EU stock and had notable performance issues as they have different specs for the EU market due to restrictions over there and perform poor. But these may be better just do your research first before buying.

    • This has been discussed in the Amazon review comments, apparently when flashed with openwrt it unlocks the au bands and has feature parity with local stock.

      Link here: https://amzn.asia/d/1sVnpx3

      • It may work but says could still be limited as it’s hardware is limited to lower spec too they are made different. States it near the end of their comment

        • I'll receive mine tomorrow, I'll flash openwrt and find out.

          • +1

@zxcvb: Received mine and replaced my wifi 6 mesh network with this router and just in stock firmware it's excellent wifi range that I have no need for my previous mesh network for a two storey house with multiple devices on 100mps connection. I'll flash openwrt and report back.

            • +1

@zxcvb: Installed openwrt with the openwrt2020 theme by largely following the instructions here on the 1.2 eu firmware without flashing the older version.

This bit is the key to continue with the installed version on 1.2 EU firmware: fw_setenv tp_boot_idx = 0 and reboot., followed by official instructions.

              https://forum.openwrt.org/t/installing-openwrt-on-mercusys-m…

I didn't bother setting up a static IP, Just had it connected via ethernet and used scp to transfer files.

I've set it all up. The only manual part was setting up the guest wifi from scratch but I just followed the official openwrt instructions and it worked first go.

All AU bands available, both wifi networks set to auto. Wifi is rock solid to far reaches of the house. I've disposed the mesh network. The added bonus is now my Sonos speakers don't get confused and it all just works.

Thanks OP for a great deal. It's an absolute bargain with openwrt installed.

              • @zxcvb: Thanks. Will be useful when I get around to installing Openwrt on it. Instructions sound pretty straightforward.
The stock firmware UI also seems very simple if somewhat limiting in capability.

                • +1

@hsc21: I don't recall setting step 17 in the official instructions but have not had any issues so far. I think its because I never downgraded from the official stock firmware that had been installed. See how you go and maybe update to confirm.

              • @zxcvb: Thanks for the update, disregarding the Extra openwrt options, after the firmware upgrade was the wifi range worth the effort.?

                • +1

@arsenal1: Yes it was. Can see a clear difference before and after with both radios set to auto instead of setting a channel, maybe because it uses the Australian bands reducing congestion, I did the set the country to AU instead of the default, before setting to auto. Other benefits include adblock, watch dog and for future vpn connections.

I'm very happy with the outcome and its been stable.

My recommendation is try it in stock firmware for a few days and if you see a significant improvement over your current setup, just leave it as is. Most people would be happy with the stock firmware and can also use easy mesh devices instead of configuring openwrt mesh.

                  • +1

                    @zxcvb: Update:

As good openwrt was, my devices on wifi were getting disconnected after 20 to 24 hours. Looking at the logs it turned out they were getting disconnected due to lack of activity due to known openwrt issues. The recommended workaround was to setup a cron job to ping all connected devices via WiFi by installing the fping package.

                    Openwrt recommended solution:
https://openwrt.org/faq/deauthenticated_due_to_inactivity did not work either, presumably because I had set the country code to AU which causes the above setting to be ignored due to another bug.

I was rather frustrated by all this and have flashed back the stock firmware from openwrt. So far after flashing the stock firmware, it has been solid for 24 hours and no disconnects.

                    tldr: stick with stock firmware

  • i bought this during black friday. it is great, but wish it had more options, like speed capping to guest of my old asus router. my guest aren't special and i don't want them to have the 1gb speed.

    • Have you installed openwrt?

      • nope, im not that advanced. lol
i just used an asus program installed in the app of my old router. mercusys doesn't have options like that.
