Best 250+ Plan for HFC - Old House & Cabling

I'm running around in circles trying to collect info and research about how HFC cabling in an old house affects the internet connection stability and speed and what plan should I go with for this house that I'm moving into soon.

It is an old house with HFC connection and do old coaxial cables have any impact ?

I have already run ethernet cables from the HFC entry point to the office and theatre room through the roof. And I will be using the deco X50 devices as access points.

I'm mainly looking for 250 Mbps plans. If I can get any ultrafast plan for a similar or slightly higher price, I can definitely consider it.

  • Why not switch to fibre?

    • nbn HFC to FTTP costs about $20,000 or more. Your shout jv.

It's free to upgrade in certain areas, depending where the rollout is at.

Yeah nbn are upgrading FTTC to FTTP and FTTN to FTTP for $0 at eligible locations.

There isn't a free upgrade path for HFC to FTTP.

        • Leaptel actually pays me $10 a month for a year to upgrade to FTTP in Lake Macquarie… and the install was free (FTTN > FTTP)

      • JV starting investing 1mil

    • Yeah, basically what others said. No free upgrade from HFC for now. NBN is treating HFC and FTTP as same for now on terms of privilege and priority

All HFC homes can get 250/25 and 1000/50. HFC should be stable enough but if it's not tell your ISP and nbn should fix it. Is the nbn NTD box installed?

How much do you want to spend a month?

    • Yes The house has the black HFC NTD box. I'm looking to spend around 90-100 $ for a good value stable plan

Start with Leaptel, Launtel or Buddy Telco. All of them have Oz support if you need it.

Consider Superloop later on if your HFC is stable enough. Support is based overseas. If required you can run the Refreshify testing in the Superloop app and it automatically books an nbn technician if there is a fault.

  • The coax was rolled out in 80s and 90s, so it isn't like it is some old cable wrapped in cotton and waxed paper (as my pstn line at my old house was).
The common issue with higher speed plans is congestion at the node, not performance issues on the lead in, but if it is causing a problem, NBN can fix it.

    • Makes sense ! I haven't connected it yet but i will test it out and see if it has any performance issue or not.

  • Not sure why the need for for circle running?

Choose what speed you want and when it is installed they cut the end bits of the cable off to freshen them up if it tests poorly with their machine.

    • So you mean the ISP first tests the connection on their end even before I can do it and file a complaint if there is a performance issue. Is this common across all ISPs ?

No what I mean is when NBN install the black box they do the test at your house.

It has to be able to do the highest marketed speed.
