I checked out the Sony XM5, Sennheiser M4, Bose QC, Dyson OnTrac, and these Sonos Ace. I found the Sennheisers to be flimsy, albeit comfortable. The Dyson set was overkill and way too heavy. The Bose felt kinda meh both to wear and to listen through.
I was torn between the Sony XM5 and the Sonos Ace. The Sonos Ace had better ear coverage, though it felt a bit heavier than the XM5s. I also saw on Reddit that XM5s are breaking around the connector cuffs, and the XM6 FTC filings show it has the same connector, so I decided to go with the Sonos Ace instead.
I almost pulled the trigger on the Ace, but the 30% off seemed kinda meh. Then I came home, checked OzBargain, and look what I see, LOL. Thanks, OP, I decided to grab one!

For noise cancelling headphones, Sony is the queen. No one else is comparable.
I'm not an audiophile, to be honest they both good to me. Felt like the Sonos had a better cuff fit.

I've been trying various headphones every time I go past a JB Hifi or other vendors, but it's a difficult task - only the mid / top of the range models are on 'display' and most of those you can only listen to demo music (which of course is purposefully selected) and through wired connection! Sony & Bose in particular.

The Sony xm-4 and xm-5 sounded great, but couldn't try them with my own music or over bluetooth. Could tell they were a notch above the CH-720 though. But they are beyond my budget.Ye I would of picked the XM5s given the weight it felt so much lighter, but after the many reviews on reddit the hinges breaking after 1-2 years, thats a no go, cant be stuffed doing warranty after 1-2 years for a premium product.
I love my XM3s and the sound quality and NC and connection is still perfect after seven years but the hinges on mine broke within the first month and Sony refused to uphold the warranty. I just wish they would fix this casing issue because I don’t want to go thru it again with XM5s
There was a greatbdeal on the Sennheiser M4's on the Sennheiser ebay store, $399 less $80 with a code, not sure if still on. I went the Sony Ult Wear and they are high achievers for s supposedly mid-tier headphone, zero regrets. They are $298 on the Sony site and you can get 10% off your first purchase for signing up. The advantage of buying from Sony direct is you'll get the latest production units which no longer have the hinge issues caused by previous manufacturing defects. But I still envy the Momentum 4's, specifically in the denim blue colour, and might buy them one day as a second pair that stays home.

I went the Sony Ult Wear and have zero regrets. The XM5's aren't as durable as others in their price range, and the Ult Wear can be tuned to sound just like the XM5 (but with a heap more bass) anyway. The XM4 is old tech now, but still pretty good. The Ult hinge breaking issue has also been fixed now with the later production run, and Sony warranties have been extended out if your unit is affected (can check your SN on the website). Doof Doof!

I received a free replacement for the original Bose QC35 which was replaced for Bose QC45 after 6-7 years. I was not even the first owner and had bought them from CEX 😅

Huh? RTINGS gave XM4 7.4 and AirPods Max 7.5 for neutral sound. Competitors for these headphones. 0.1/0.2 difference.

Opinions on where these are on the tier list vs XM4/5 and QCs?
It seems to me the Bose SE is lighter, more comfortable, has better NC and comparable audio quality from a quick search. I can’t see the Sonos is worth that much, even when it’s on sale. Maybe people already in the Sonos ecosystem will value the experience though.
