Hoon's Weapon of Choice: The Commodore’s Evolution

A decade ago, the Holden Commodore was the undisputed hoon’s choice(drive.com.au). With its powerful V8s, rear-wheel drive, and muscular presence. The VT, VX, VZ, VE, VF Commodores etc in my opinion we're the go to 'd***head' car of choice.

Fast forward today, and a number of factors have influenced the change: tighter P-plate restrictions, stricter modification laws, and the end of Commodore production. Education around hoon driving has also shifted, and the car scene especially around JDM cars has dissipated.

Personally, I've noted a large increase in Golfs have now become the new go-to of the younger generation and just curious if others have noted the same, there has been an increased media presence, and it seems to always be a Golf.

P.S In full transparency, there is a little bit of a hidden agenda here, someone who is looking a new vehicles regularly, I don't mind a sporty car, although, don't want to be associated with this crowd, the stereotyping and insurance premiums that go with it.

So, does the typical 'hoon' still exist? And if they do, what are they driving now?

Back then i used to get RDO from work and i usually would do my grocery on those days as there are less people at the shops. However, one day i woke up too late so finally managed to get out of the bed around 3PM… And wow, i was constantly bullied on the road by 7 seaters and i was still groggy from my sleep ins 😅

      • Afternoon drivers around the sububs are so much worse than the morning crowd from what I've seen - morning commuters and tradies etc (say before about 7:30, too early for school dropoff) have got nothing on parents doing afternoon school runs and extracurricular dropoffs in terms of traffic chaos

    • To be fair, it took her 20 seconds to get to 80.

I’d rather a hoon in a ranger or commodore tailgating me on the road than a gen z or younger who is to preoccupied on their phone, or too anxious and depressed & dumbed down on benzos and antidepressants to actually drive safely.

    • +1

      clearly not a DCOA viewer

    • Spot the salty ranger driver, maybe antidepressants would solve your rage issues

      • And we’ve found the salty mentally unstable. Maybe you need to take your own advice.

  • Old ass Holden Cruze

    • Or a smoky Craptiva!

haha yes same engine and 100k max transmission before it blows up I believe

I think one of the biggest killers of the hoon culture is that most cars sold in Australia are automatics and has been that way for more than a decade. Its much harder to lose traction in an automatic without doing damage or dodgy work around's to force an automatic transmission from revving in Neutral and force it into Drive. With modern CVT and dual clutch transmissions I don't think there are any work arounds to rev an engine and dump into gear.

A second reason is that car manufacturers don't want to send their affordable models to Australia. Ever since the world suffered the Global Financial Crisis most of the car manufacturers upgraded the specifications on the Australian cars as they knew Australian's could afford it.

Think you are doing it wrong.

  • I have lived in every corner of Aus and the hooning I hear and see in Hobart now is the absolute worst I've ever heard anywhere in Aus at any time. There would have to be 5-10 loud and long events every night in all directions, it's wild. Even during the day I've come across kids with burned out clutches pushing their shit boxes home.

Seems like the most easily removed crime imaginable but 🤷🏻‍♂️

    • +2

Crime? I would rather kids doing burnouts than cars and homes being broken into any day of the week.

Not sure you quite get it, most of the signs around are bent over, they do it when people are walking past etc. It's definitely a crime and has public risk.

Obviously I'd rather that than a break in by its not zero sum. Both of them can piss off. It's easy to leave the town limits for 5 mins and do it safetly.

    • How do they pay to keep fixing it?

      • Old model falcon clutches are like $200 bucks. Quite affordable on Centrelink haha

  • Most I see around the place are stereotypical hoons with really loud mufflers and sound systems turned up so Elon Musk can hear them on Mars.for some reason, they like to share them at about 4:30am. Is it illegal to put potato in tail pipe these days?

I'm assuming it was mainly young kids with their first cars, because we hardly hear them around here anymore so either the kids grew up, moved away from home or mum and dad told em to stop making so much noise!

It does make me a bit anxious when these young kids attempt skills they probably haven't had much practise with or suitable, safe areas to practise.

I think they forget that their cars are dangerous killing machines and have the potential to cause horrific outcomes for the kids, their mates and innocent bystanders which can affect them for the rest of their lives.

I wonder if the caregivers of these brand new drivers with powerful cars give much thought to what could go wrong if something unplanned for happens when Johnny is out blowing steam off with his mates.

We had a rule in our house that we (the adults) would have nothing to do with them qualifying for their licences or input on what new car they would select. It goes without saying, they had to buy their own car and pay for its rego, insurance and maintenance etc. on receipt of their p licences, they were also required to do two defensive driving courses- one at Norwell, the other at Stradbroke in the sand.

To accumulate the required 100 hours practise driving each child required, we approached RACQ driving lessons/instructors and bought a couple hundred in bulk prices (we had three on learners at same time and one before and two after.

They had to pay for these lessons themselves.
They had to pay for everything about their cars for themselves.

Because every lesson was conducted by RACQ instructor, and he signed their books, we made an application for special exemption and they only had to do
70 hours driving each on their Ps

These were my babies, I made them from scratch. I know they had to grow up but hopefully I was able to help them do that a little safer.

I figured if they realised how much it costs to get a licence and then a car, they might think twice about it before they go joining off and wrapping it around a police.

6 kids! You must have a healthy income

They will be well prepared for the post-apocalypse(imdb.com).

  • Saw a Simpson's cartoon when all these SUV's were first coming out. They were driving along the road and would just tip over on their sides.

From that I assumed that a lot of them were made top heavy and randomly tipped over all the time.

I had to move away and had to purposely look for a place to live that wasn't infested by rangers, modded up golfs, certain types driving AMG Mercedes (you know who I'm talking about), and just generally (profanity) who love their cars too much in Sydney and probably spend too much on them while leasing them. If it wasn't the obnoxiously loud exhaust it was the idiots who modified their utes to make that stupid whistling induction noise.
Thankfully I found a place and instead get to listen to bird noises and blessed silence.

    • "you know who I'm talking about"

      Haha, more hints?

        Without resorting to race…
Fade cuts, black t-shirt, might call you "cuz" a lot.

        • Seats reclined to 45 degree backwards for lower centre of gravity, funded by Centrelink?

          Habibi! It's you!

  • The hoon car of choice that I know are those v6/v8 RWDs because leaving the longest rubber marks on the road is hoon's ultimate activity. Those types of rides get a minimum of 20 minutes 999 points safety check every time at every police breath testing stop.

So todays(in 4WDs, Trucks and FWDrive cars) are not really pure breed hoon but watered down wannabees.

  • all the rich hoons have opened acai shops

    • Next to the under the counter vaping shop?

  • C63 AMGs have been a thing for hoons for a decade..

Also WRX and Evo before that.

Commodores where cheaper and more common alternatives that unless where SS / HSV where not in the same category.
