No wonder grey-area IPTV services are booming.

    • +5

      Exactly!

The whole point of Netflix was making it convenient and affordable to choose what to watch.

I don't know if the original business plan was never financially sustainable, or they just got greedy.

The same choice now has you signing up to $80 of streaming services and navigating them all to watch what you want.

Or you just go elsewhere for an affordable and convenient option.

      • No, the whole point of nextflix is to monopolise and maximise profits. Enshittification.

    • How does one acquire these IPTV services?

    • It's always been there, use cloudflare/google DNS servers and you are all good to go.

  • Godspeed

  • RIP the flix that broke the internet via iinet, many moons ago.

  • +3

I paid extra to remove ads from Prime Video, and I still occasionally see ads. It's infuriating. Netflix with ads would be too annoying but 4K Netflix without ads is too expensive. Piracy really is the more convenient option now.

  • +6

    Any ads = Free

Its about time all the companies understand this. Together with that their current quality would max out at $10pm..

Frankly I've only tended to get Netflix a gift card at a time for the past few years, when there are holidays, and after the lack of anything worth watching at Xmas, I'm unlikely to do even this again.

Forget enshittification, they need to learn how to deshittify their offerings if they want to keep subscribers.

Ten years ago, Netflix launched here and it was awesome! Torrent rates plummeted.

But several years later and the enshitification begins. Now it is complete. Back to the high seas folks!

    • Where's good sailing these days?

      • The old bay is still there.

      • +2

Stremio and realdebrid. No sails, just speedboating.

  • is this $8 one ? I just ended that couple of days ago, nothing to watch there

    • I guess everyone who was on Netflix basic through Optus home internet offers and the like will now be on Netflix ad version.

      • Ah! I was using the ad-based one anyway.

The way I see it - the high seas are a lot more dangerous now. Compared to the media houses of the past, these tech companies have billions more dollars to pursue legal avenues. Plus the way they are buying influence it is easier for them to get the outcome they want.

I'd have thought you'd be less likely to be prosecuted for pirating a streamer's content than pirating traditional studio content back in the day. If you use private trackers or a private IPTV service I doubt you'd ever get caught at all.

    • +5

I'd say it's far safer now. Piracy has been around for decades without anyone in Aus getting severe repurcussions.

In early days when you heard about people being sued for millions it was scary. Now? It's like Netflix and others are basically forcing you to piracy.

    • Why would you go to the seas when you can fly. There's plenty of 'free' streaming services that survive on ads with the latest episodes of whatever you want to watch. You just have to look for it.

    • +2

It’s not worth it for them to pursue you, unless you’re hosting eg that Mega guy from NZ.

We have case law here from when studio’s tried to sue people and unlike America we don’t have punitive fees they do. The cases resolved resulted in the studio having their losses calculated at the cost of a copy of whatever was pirated. No studio is going to pursue civil matters for a $30 bluray/streaming fee.

I switched to the ad version last year, hardly notice any ads…

The 'free to air' streaming services are way worse with ads.

    • How do you enjoy having less content?

      • I don't.

Everything I want to watch has been available…

        • -1

Probably because the unavailable content has been hidden from you

            @Guybrush57:

because the unavailable content has been hidden from you

            As I said:

"Everything I want to watch has been available…"

            • @jv: Then why not cancel it altogether and stick to FTA? Everything you want to watch will be available

Everything you want to watch will be available

FTA does not have everything I want to watch

Synology and QNAP stonks rising 😂😂😂

    • How can one make use of Synology and QNAP for viewing one's favourite brainwashing televisual programs?

      • Oh my sweet summer child, you have so much to learn 😂 Are you ready for the rabbit hole my man?

        • +1

Teach me, oh wise sensei. I am ready. 👨‍🎓

@tenpercent: Basically, you get to spend hundreds of dollars on hardware, dozens of hours setting it up and configuring it and the power bills on top, for the privaledge of saving ~$20 a month on a Netflix sub. The basic idea is that you download/rip media that you are interested in, store it on a NAS (Network Attached Storage) and then you can watch it from whichever device you want to. There are also options around these days for streaming video on demand directly without needing to store it on a NAS.

Ok, here are some rabbit holes for you to go down 😀

            Hardware

Firstly you need to select your hardware. The two major NAS brands are Synology and QNAP, but there are other options as well (including DIY). I have a Synology and quite like it, others prefer QNAP. You can try out the OS of each online and see which you like better, but that said, you likely won't be using the OS much as you usually interact with it via other apps on other devices. As part of this decision you also need to think about what you want to do with the NAS, as that influences how powerful it is. If you want to transcode, run Docker containers or other self hosted services you will also likely need an x86 processor, so bear that in mind. Once you've decided on the NAS enclosure you usually need to buy the hard disks to populate it. Don't forget to account for any RAID setup that you want, and ensure that anything you don't want to lose is reliably backed up. HDD brands don't matter (despite what each team will tell you). Pick whichever one fits your needs. Other things to consider here: do you have a spare ethernet port for your NAS on your router? Do you have a spare powerpoint near the router, or will you need to run an ethernet cable somewhere? Is the noise going to bother you where you're planning to put it?

            Software

Other than the OS mentioned above, you will need to install some software to run the streaming service. There are several options here. Plex is one of the most popular options but there are others like Jellyfin and Emby. You could try them all if you want and see which one you prefer. Some can run natively on the NAS, others run in a Docker container, or you could run them on another computer on your network, and just store the content on your NAS. Plex, Jellyfin and Emby all have apps that you can install directly on smart TVs, phones, tablets etc. Once the NAS is set up, the apps are usually pretty easy to get working with it.

            Finding content

When it comes to finding content, there's lots of methods. Downloading torrents is the main one, but ripping DVDs/Blurays is another option. This is a huge rabbit hole to dive into, depending on what sort of content you're looking for.

            The *arr stack.

The *arr stack refers to several applications that make searching for, finding and downloading your desired content (movies, TV shows, music, even (aduio)books) easier and more automatic. I personally don't have much experience with them, but it's a whole nother rabbit hole to dive into! If you want to dive into it, then https://wiki.servarr.com/ is probably a good place to start, or the various subreddits.

            Using it

Once you've spent your money and life hours setting all these things up, then you can just load up the app on your TV, phone, tablet or browser and consume whatever you have stored on your NAS!

Anyway, hopefully that gives you a few areas to dive into and learn about! Good luck, and there's plenty of people around online to ask for help if you want to :)

Who on earth would want to watch in 720p resolution nowadays?

    • +1

Someone who watches on their iPhone.

    • Currently watching a show on a 1360 X 768 tv……
      .

    • Someone who doesn't want to have to pay for $2k worth of drives to save $20 a month…

  • Received the email and will be cancelling before this comes into effect in April. I hardly watch Netflix compared to other streaming services or FTA like SBS on demand.

  • so someone just posted in forums about not being able to use their Giftcard on their "old" Basic plan. if you never end your sub a lot of people were staying on the cheaper plan without ads apparently (paying direct because no GC).

so what now, they will just end your sub without you doing it? and to keep watching you need to sign up at new price??

also apparently "ad free" is not what it used to be.

paramount, disney changed their T&C's to have ads, and Prime (but at least they advertised it as "limited ads" from the beginning) have ads that run even if you pay extra for Ad free tier. probably more coming soon. (if I had to guess binge probably working on a update quick 😂)

and I agree NF content has gone down the hole. but it's been like that for a few years now. new "blockbuster" releases are just average. everything else added is mostly terrible slop.
