How Do I Turn off Dark Mode?

For some reason, whenever I am logged into my account, dark mode is turned on. I can't seem to find any way to disable it or change it to light mode. I've looked in My Account -> Settings and can't find anything relating to the theme or display modes. Has anyone found a way to enable/disable dark mode?

        • I always saw the comments about how people didn't like the old dark mode and it never made sense to me, but it was always only a few and not like a huge amount of complaints. Now I'm all for change if it's for the better but when only a few people with louder voices get the change they want, it's hard to really imagine the people that were fine with it before would stay quiet, after all they didn't have any issues with it and continued using it, that's why they were silent. I'm not sure if data like this even exists but did you have like an amount of users using which mode from before and after the change? I'm sure that'd be a good reference point.

Now will I ask for it change? Not really, there's a workaround now. But what would be nice is maybe adding a third option, so that people can choose what they want. There initially was a post with a poll that sadly got merged with this thread but maybe have an official poll on what people want? I'm all for a light, current dark and a classic dark option. That way everyone can be happy.

  • Did it just get worse 😭

    • yeah it seems to have gotten worse.

"Dark Mode" is ideally meant to be easier on the eyes, not just stark and contrasty 100% black with white text.

I had to revert to light mode on this site, then use a browser extension called Stylus to apply custom CSS to certain backgrounds to dim the bright white areas. As someone else mentioned, the images against black causes too much contrast in dark mode. Ideally the setting would be a slider where you could dial in your perfect setting, "dim the lights" so to speak, rather than only 2 choices "white or black".

    • More like white or brown.
Plenty of other sites get dark mode looking good without too much fuss.
At least they changed from the darker poo brown (except for lightly shading your own comments).

I managed to dig up the exact old dark mode style and put it into a userscript if anyone wants the old dark mode back. Install it with your preferred script manager like TamperMonkey
    https://greasyfork.org/en/scripts/528536-ozbargain-dark-mode…

It will override the current dark mode style, meaning dark mode must still be selected as the preference in your profile.
You can also manually change the colours in the script to whatever you prefer.

Now also available on Userstyles(userstyles.world) for Stylus extension users. I've added customisation options that make it trivial to change colours if that's your thing. Screenshot(i.ibb.co)

Stylus applies the theme more consistently compared to the above userscript with Tampermonkey. The userscript sometimes has a small delay applying the style when loading new pages, at least for me. Not sure how to fix that.
May look at creating other themes

  • Maybe we are thinking about this all wrong and this is a money saving measure for the users.
Now that both modes suck to look at I have stopped spending as much time here, meaning less wasted time and fewer impulse purchases, the greatest bargain of all.

  • Adding to the dislike of the new dark mode.

  • Merged from New Colour Palette on Ozb

Is it just me or has the orange banner changed colour? Also the black isn't black on dark mode anymore?

    Also love this site!!!

I was wondering if I missed something. Just curious.

Going to add my feedback here - I've been using Dark Mode on OzB desktop for years and it's been perfectly fine.

The new changes as of today - specifically, the black background - are causing readability issues on an IPS desktop monitor where I am getting horrendous flickering as the pixels struggle to switch between the higher contrast colours as I scroll through the page. This isn't just an "It's ugly, I don't like it" whinge, it's now physically painful to look at. The prior grey background did not have this issue.

I understand this was changed for OLED devices, but the impact on us 'others' has been outsized to the benefit. But I'm also sorry this has caused so much consternation to Scotty and the team.

Is there a recommended method to modify the CSS on a per-site basis? I assume there's a Firefox desktop extension that might work…?

EDIT: I used wangasm's link above which resolved this issue

    • It still looks shit on my phone as I don’t have any way to run a browser extension.

      • You can install extensions on Firefox for Android and Safari for iOS.

Can’t we just get the old mode back as a native option (Light/Dark/Classic Dark).

  • How do I set Light mode permanently? I can change it on per login session, but when I login again, it is Dark again.
The quick My Account / Light (Dark) does not seem to be permanent…

Is there a setting in My Account / Settings / Profile somewhere? @scotty

    • Light / Dark / Device setting is per device and not saved against your account, as someone might have multiple devices with different settings.

Is it in Cookies? I clear cookies like there is no tomorrow :)
Thanks, but I, personally, would prefer account wide setting, for all devices. I hate dark mode, with all due respect.

        • Local storage, not cookie. If you don't like dark mode but your device is having a dark theme? Otherwise it would be using light mode by default.

@scotty: Just tested it. Yes, my Mac is set to Dark in Settings / Appearance. If I change it to Light and login to OzB, I get Light OzB.

My problem is, I'm happy with Mac in Dark, with all apps / websites I have on it. With a single exception of OzB website, I cannot put a finger on it, it just hurts my eyes …

Example of Dark mode done right, does not hurt eyes: https://www.macrumors.com/2020/10/26/magsafe-charger-needs-2…
