DF54 Single Dosing Coffee Grinder $370 + $20 Delivery @ DF64.com

702

I've been eyeing this single dosing coffee grinder and many of the Australian retailers are selling this for $429 (either free delivery or shipping and on backorder).

This is from the official distributor and was $389 + $20 shipping yesterday and has come down by $20 to $369 + $20 shipping for the 220-240V variant in white and black.

By far one of the more popular coffee grinders on the market and compared pricewise to the popular Baratza Encore ESP (is a bit plasticky) (although I'm comparing a chute grinder vs single).

Product Description:

DF54 is an entry-level flat burr coffee grinder that incorporates the best features from the DF64 II but in a more compact design. DF54 was designed in mind to provide the best quality coffee grind in the entire coffee industry at this price point. We are confident that the DF54 triumphs as the market leader among other 40mm and 54mm grinders in the market which produce clumpy and uneven coffee grinds. For an even better grind, do consider the DF64 Gen 2 which produces a superior grind quality and grind speed.

DF54 features custom-made stainless steel 54mm flat burrs for a fluffy grind with minimal clumping and consistent particle size distribution. The exit chute is equipped with a plasma generator (Ionizer) that eliminates static. The three seated positions for the upper burr carrier, along with the integrated wave spring, ensure absolute stability in the grinding chamber while achieving minimal retention at a new level. The integrated Anti-Popcorn cover enhances grinding speed and prevents uneven grinding.

    • Go for the 64 or 83.
They will all do the job but size improves the speed of which it grinds and generally reduces heat applied to the beans

We have DF54 + Breville Dual Boiler and it works great! Everyone comments on the quality of the coffee :)

    • What do you have now?

This is a really solid grinder to pair with the BDB, but in the espresso world you can always spend more (albeit for heavily diminishing returns after a certain point)

      • I got the breville grinder pro for free but the coffee it grinds tastes kinda shit

        • I've got the SGP and the Dual boiler and it's been making great coffees for years (albeit mostly milk coffees). Maybe a good cleaning and look for some new beans will help?

Had a bad experience with this supplier. Ordered the df64e a year or two ago. Long story short the inside of grinder filled up with coffee, turns out the chute was missing gasket causing it to fill up. Supplier blamed me for a while until I had to pull it apart and sent them photos. Wouldn't offer a refund, said it works be fine with a new gasket even though the motor/ internals were covered with coffee, only option was accept a new machine at a discounted rate.

    • thanks for the info, will wait for another one of the other suppliers

    • Just get from Amazon, free returns within 2y

      • Yep do love Amazon returns.

      • Are you sure? In the description it says 1 year and you would be dealing with the same seller as this deal

        • ACL 2y

  • Give it a crack… It's a good grinder for that price. Love mine.

  • +7

I would buy from an Australian based distributor so that you have some protections under Australian consumer law should something go wrong

  • +8

This is just the singapore reseller acting like they are the manufacturer btw. the factory does does not deal with consumers

  • Been in the market for a while for something <$400 to replace my Breville SGP. Anyone suggestions between the Encore ESP, DF54 and the Opus?

  • They've also got the df64 gen 2 at $359. Anyone comment on the difference. I was under the impression that the df64 is a better machine?

    • yeah Df64 is better but DF54 can work well with the right touch. DF54 is entry level flat grinder.

      • Why is d64 bettter?
From what i can find, d64 is more customisable for burr 3rd party options and faster, but is that it?

        • DF54 is designed for entry level flat grinders so for beginners.

        • Upgradeability and gateway to the world of SSP 64mm flat burrs, mainly.

Not going to go into detail as what you’re asking can be found by googling quite easily – generally the larger your burrs, the more consistent the grind. Being ‘faster’ only means something in so far as the type of coffee you’re trying to brew. Espresso, more rpm = more fines = more crema = more body. Pourovers, less rpm = less fines = more clarity = more acidity/juicier.

    • Never mind when you click on a link in the au product page it takes you to US pricing for the df64…

  • are these as good as a DF64 though?

    • Been eyeing the DF64. Waiting for it to drop below $580 but alas, Singaporeans have now jacked it up to $639.

      • +1

Its $577 when you click through the link at the bottom of the description section on the DF54 deal linked above.

        • sorry wasn't clear - i'd prefer to buy from amazon. Using discount amazon GC + delivery and returns are free

      • +1

I grabbed mine for $580 from Amazon at Christmas time. It's been really a pleasure to use!

        • stock burrs working well? Do you feel the need to upgrade to SSP or DLC burrs at all?

          • +1

@ilubbargains: Better off not watching all those reviews and forums. Spending 400+ and needing to upgrade stuff immediately is total bs

          • +1

@ilubbargains: Stock burrs are totally fine! Very happy with them. Seems sort of ridiculous to me to spend nearly as much as I did on the grinder to replace its brand new burrs. In a similar vein also think that seasoning burrs is a bit of a waste of coffee, unless you have a mountain of absolutely unusable beans. And even then, it kind of seems like a waste of time. I unboxed the grinder, ground 20g of beans, and enjoyed the great coffee it made. Will there be some change over time in how the burrs work as they break in? Maybe? Does it matter? I don't think so.

  • Can this grinder go fine enough to do light/filter roasts for espresso? My grinder's finest setting is borderline enough (any finer and the burrs start touching).

    • -2

Plenty of great YT reviews my friend. Plus you can change the burrs.

      • The comments are fun - people will say a $400 machine still isn't good enough and you have to change the burrs this and that..
        Rabbit hole haha

    • if all you wanna do is grind fine enough for light spro roast, sure it'll do. but if you're concerned about taste as well, the stock burrs probably aren't the best.
DF64 is a gateway grinder, most people buy it so they can play around with different SSP burrs, it'll eventually cost you even more because the burr alignment is absolute junk on the DF64 out of the factory, and people just move on to a more expensive grinder with better tolerances.

any thoughts re pros and cons between this one and Varia VS3 Coffee Grinder Gen 2

    • I went through this just two weeks ago having to buy a new machine and grinder. Read loads of reviews and watched loads of YT videos. Different level of grinders. DF54 is budget whereas Varia is lower mid-range. Also conical vs flat burr. I ended up going the Varia due to numerous threads about the lacklustre warranty on the DF54 as well as inconsistency with the grind on the DF54 as well as grind retention. To be fair all budget range grinders have some sort of issue which is why I went up a level to mid-range. As mentioned in this post this is an overseas seller so YMV with warranty. I got the Varia off Alternative Brewing who has a great reputation and based in Brissy.

I'm no expert barista but i'm pretty happy with my selection.

It's by no mean an easy comparison but I think its fairer to compare vs3 with DF64 from the marketing and price point of views.

I am currently a vs3 user, for the most part its a very nice and capable machine. Grinds fine enough for medium dark roast at setting around 4 to 5 which means it is capbale of grinding even finer for light roast.

Love the looks and the feel, not noisy and reasonable grind speed. There is however one huge caveat and apparently they have a dial shifting issue during middle of grind and that is quite common. I went through some diagnosis with the vendor with some back and forth, and they even sent me a replacement burrs, it did not solve the issue but eventually I worked out that the bearing ring was the culprit. So I know to replace the bearing ring every now and then as part of the maintenence requirement for this machine.

DF64 also looks nice and has good review and it has a flat burr which to some people is a preference due to higher consistency and different profile.

Would I have chosen DF64 over VS3 if I can choose again? Probably not.

      • I've got one too, a couple things you can try with the moving dial issue.. Pull out the burr springs and ever so slightly stretch them. Try putting a light dab of food grade grease on the dial threads.

I mostly don't have the issue though.

Have upgraded to hypernova burrs and they are great, there is also the path of getting aliexpress burrs and doing a couple slight mods to fit.

  • I bought a DF64 from this website and it has been a good experience. When my grinder had a minor issue they replied to my email promptly and provided me with a solution to the problem.

    • What problem did you have?

      • The old Gen 2 DF64's had a plastic switch that was prone to jamming. Mine had that problem so they sent me a replacement metal one.

  • Great price. Lowers the entry threshold.
Grinding my own beans made me appreciate how variable coffee shop coffee is, and save me from buying from them.

  • Got this last year. Don’t know how it compares with others as it’s the first one I’ve owned. Paired with my duel boiler it makes a better coffee than I can get in cafes. (Could be because of the grinder, could also be a reflection of perths coffee standards). In any case, if you’re on the fence just get it.

  • Oh, don't buy from this website, I did and was a headache to get my money back.
The official DF supplier is on AliExpress or something like this, and you have the Australian importers like Coffee Tech or Turin, which should be fine to buy. This website, I really believe is a Scam, I just managed to get my money back after proving to my banking that was a fraud. Read their warranty and return policy before proceeding.

  • The price for df54 from the df64.com website has historically been hovering around 350+ delivery in the past. Factors like currency exchange rate and supply/demand causing price fluctuations.

I got my df54 from ebay from local distributors for 409+ free shipping. With the bigger ebay sales, it was down to sub 400 for a short while. It has been on Amazon for 399 free shipping aswell (sourced from df64.com).

Local distributors are always better for a fraction more as df64.com warranty terms aren’t favourable at all.

Its a great entry level grinder as it presents great value, probably best in the sub 500 price point.

  • This or niche zero?

    • -1

      niche

    • I had been eyeing off the Niche for a while but ended up pull the pin on the DF64 for half the price. The Niche is a nicer looking and quieter unit - so it has the aesthetic edge. But if those things don't matter to you so much the DF options are great value.
