Advice on Installing 2nd Hand Beto Child Seat for Bicycle

Hello Experts!

Hoping for some advice on best way forward here…wife bought a 2nd hand child seat from FB Marketplace, unfortunately it seems to be missing some key parts. I've managed to install it without, but it seems to bend/twist the brackets, I assume this is not safe? Or is it fine?

I can buy the missing pieces as part of a spare parts kit, but it is a special order in my area it seems, so not sure how long it will take to get and we were hoping to go for a ride tomorrow!

Thoughts?

See photos below…hopefully this shows my dilemma?

Installed with bent/twisted brackets:

Unscrewed the joint to show the big gap (about 1cm):

I watched this video and it is missing the last "double elbow"? pieces that I assume would reduce or remove this bending?

Thanks in advance!

Go for it as is, should be safe

Should be okay, but buy spare part kit & still ride 2moro; install with new parts once received

Not safe! Buy the spare part kit for $20 and wait to install it before riding

It appears we follow the same principle when it comes to our kids safety….

You should bend the steel strips to fit.
It is not ideal to stress the brackets where they are bolted onto the frame.

    • You mean "You shouldn't bend the steel strips to fit"?

No, you can bend the steel, e.g. in a vice. It will not crack like some metals.
You want it flush with the boss where the screw goes in.

        • Yes, if I fasten all the screws they are flush, but the metal is slightly twisted.

Oh okay, I get what you mean now. Took me a minute 😬

What are your wife's thoughts on your putting your child in that without installing it properly? Or is this a forgiveness / permission thing?

She thought it was dangerous, which is what prompted me to ask the question. We went to 99 bikes this morning and they said it should be fine 😂🤷🏻‍♂️

So we went ahead. Not on the road or anything too fast or bumpy, just in parks on cycleways.

        Braver man than me.

        Godspeed.

Just keep an eye on it, as screws can work loose over time, far more likely than it breaking. It looks like you have lock washers?

Steel is fine to bend a bit, a couple of times. Bend it to suit where the bolts are. Shifting spanner closed up on it should do the trick. Give it a twist until it lines up better. If it was aluminium you can pretty much only bend it once, and not to a tight radius unless you want to weaken it.

Why spend $20 for 5% of the kit?

I'd put my kid in it no question. It's not even "should be safe". It'll be perfectly fine.

Thanks, that was my general thought process also.

We are just recently getting into cycling recreationally for the kids, dunno how long it will last!

The guy at 99 bikes said if he had the two "double elbow" (I've named them this) parts, he would have just given them to us, any other bike store would probably do the same.

Apparently the bike community is good that way 🤷🏻‍♂️
