Recommend Me a Car Please!

I need to replace my current car. I'd really appreciate some advice on what "new" car to buy (it could be new / demo or secondhand). I want to spend as little as possible (of course!) but I have some non-negotiable "must haves":
1. Reliability
2. Suitability for lots of SHORT trips (eg 10-30 minute round trips) in suburban areas - almost no freeway driving.
3. Heated seats. Seriously!
4. Parking sensors & camera.
I tend to "hold onto" cars for a long time (until they become unreliable / too expensive to repair etc) and the car will be garaged.
If anyone can spare the time to share some advice / recommendations, I'd be so thankful.

where are you seeing heated front seats for ascent?

    • Ascent Sport doesn’t have heated seats. Only the ZR

  • I am a complete Toyota fan, so do any of those come with heated seats?

Might be cheaper to organise a few hot water bottles, just sayin.

Once upon a time, I had $13k and I needed a car NOW. The only dealer who had a car available was Hyundai had a bright egg yolk yellow 1.3l Getz.

The Gods were loving me that day, they damaged the egg yolk yellow one while they were detailing it, and after apologising profusely, knocking off $200 and giving me some mats, bonnet protector, right window guard - other stuff too, asked if I would take the black one instead of the yellow one.

I tried really hard to contain my excitement, but I really, really didn't want any egg yolk yellow car, especially that broken one! So I accepted the black substitute and all the goodies with good grace as though I was doing them the favour.

I had the 4 door hatch. Only got the 1.3 engine, so with a few kids pushing 6.6 ft, it was a bit tough getting up
Some hills sometimes, but on the flats, it went like gangbusters, could park in the squishiest of places, small enough to fit in car parks and be far away from neighbour door hitting you. Ran on the whiff of an oily rag. Services were cheap, batteries were cheap, everything a bout this car was cheap to maintain and insure and it went like the clappers on the highway or back streets

Never tried to tow on it

And at almost 200,000 started belching black smoke which a variety of mechanics assured me wasn't a blown gasket, but after 10 years, and the thrashing we gave it, I just went yeah/nah and traded it in on a new car.

No heated seats though, need hot water bottles or heat bags.

This has become a stereotype…. Toyota being reliable.

Their new cars are nothing but far from reliable with problems after problems and yet expensive, like VW they lied regarding their cars pollution.
New cars use keyless which are being stolen like hotcake, it is that easy to clone a keyless key without you even knowing.
New Toyota cars can be stolen by connecting into its headlight harness (it provides both power and data to the car's ECU ), look on YT.

A month ago I was just like you looking for a car, second hand is a lottery to be honest and European cars aren't necessarily the cheapest.
So I got a Suzuki Jimny XL:

    • Japanese
    • it is easy and cheap to maintain
    • you can DIY yourself
    • Economic asf in suburb areas
    • Standard keys so zero risk of having your car taken, key cloned ( manual too, people cannot drive manual for sh1t )
    • Excellent mechanical 4WD capabilities, no electronics buttons

5y unlimited km warranty and physical buttons everywhere, cars released within the last few years have touch buttons everywhere so a lot of things to break and expensive maintenance.

    • i'm fond of the jimny as it's unique and great for a offroad weekend but it's a tiny little car with a weeny little thirsty engine with the comfort and ride quality of a scooter with a wonky wheel, not for everyone

      • I'm 6"2/1.88, I have driven my Jimny XL for hours and I can tell you that there's nothing wrong with its comfort and drive quality.

My height makes any car feels like a nightmare to drive and yet, anything is reason for me to drive my XL.

I've not replaced suspension or anything, fully stock.

        • fair enough. it'd be high up on my list for a hobby/weekend car
