MG ZST Vibe MY25 from $22,888 Driveaway, MG3 Excite MY25 from $21,888 Driveaway @ MG

2680

This is THE CHEAPEST brand new SUV available in Australia, being a 2025 model with a 10 year/250000km warranty. MG has reduced the price of this even further, making it a much better value option than the new generation ZS which has increased prices with the base model Excite now from $26990 driveaway.

The Vibe is the second model above the base model (Core) with extra features which are 17” Two-tone machined alloy wheels, 6 speaker sound system, Rain sensing wipers, Front Fog lights and In built satellite navigation.

Standard ZST features:

  • 10.1" touch screen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
  • 360 degree camera
  • Keyless entry and push button start
  • LED headlights and taillights

The ZST is compatible with 91 unleaded. 95 is NOT needed.

The MG3 has also had it's price reduced to a very low $21,888, making it the cheapest brand new automatic car in 2025. Good option for those looking for a smaller car with lower fuel consumption.

My cousin purchased a brand new Tank 300 and it turned off while he was driving. No electrics, nothing. You get what you pay for.

    • +6

The Tank 300 is a GWM

      • -1

        BUT IT'S CHINESE! /s

        • +1

We have no benchmark for Chinese cars… GWM vs BYD vs MG vs ABC etc… They're all the same as far as we can tell. New brands from China that are extremely cheap, drive like crap, and are selling like hotcakes.

    • +1

I cleaned/detailed one of those recently, and was shocked that after about a year of city-driving, the logos on the hub caps were severely pitted/scratched. I don't believe it has even been off-road. The inside also has a lot lot of plastics that fail to emulate metal.

    • +4

This happened to my 2003 Peugeot 307. So it's not uniquely a Chinese car problem.

    • +1

      Happened in my Mazda Tribute.

      • +20

It wasn't the greatest car in the world. It was just a tribute.

        • +2

Needless to say the car was stunned. Putt Putt went its exhaust pipe and the car was done.

    • +11

Sounds like the engineers at GWM did a fantastic job copying Jeep then.

    • +1

I have a friend that bought a brand new Toyota Prado and the motor has packed up and he was waiting for a new motor from Japan, it did arrive, damaged and now he is waiting on another motor from Japan to be delivered….

      • Can confirm this is true. I was the damaged engine

    • That happened to me once before, when I was stopped at the lights, engine turned itself off. No idea why, but wasn't a Chinese car. The car didn't have auto engine idling either.

    • My cousin heard back from GWM and apparently the fan can't operate in eco mode so the car turns off to avoid over heating 😂

      • +1

Eco mode turns off critical systems, classic. That's like calling turning the car off Eco mode which I guess is correct enough.

    • +1

Not ideal but stuff like that happens.

Have had a ford do that. Have had a Kia blow a steering pump while driving. Both will give you a fright but as long as the loss of power doesn't also come with a complete loss of control its not too bad.

Edit: only just saw the update re eco mode. That's a kinda stupid bug but from the sounds of it should be a simple software update. Surprised the didn't find that during testing.

$22k brand new car in 2025. should feel lucky there is still an option in this crazy market :(

  • There doesn’t seem to be a car review of this model yet so I think people should wait for a proper review to be done. If it scores better than the MY23/24 version then it might be worth considering…

Update: After doing some basic research I think you are better off with the ZST Excite version as it has a turbo engine. I would pass on the Core/Vibe versions as it seriously lacks power!

  • +2

Hyundai Getz were underrated cars - especially for the price!!

    • You still see them around.

Not sure if we can say the same thing for these Chinese MGs. Hyundai has already had about 40 years of building ICE by the time they released the Getz.

      • I am the CCP has 4 plus decades of stealing state and corporate secrets.

  • +7

Keep bringing ones like these over pls! We need the established brands to feel the pain before we get better deals!

    • +1

I'm also hoping they feel the pain and do better but they seem to be crumbling and leaving the AU market. Shame really

      • -3

Why would they hang around if bottom-feeding idiots want to enrich the CCP with the second-biggest purchase of their lives?
I'd leave for more savvy customers too.

  • +2

Tempted to buy one and do laps of australia for a few years in it. Can it be any slower than a kombie?

    • Unless things have changed? An MG ZST Vibe purchase vs a VW Kombie would mean a lean towards a more 'celibate' lifestyle.

If that's what floats your boat it might end up being an absolutely great option to do laps of Australia in.

      • +1

It could be fun seeing how many warranty claims you could make in 10 years. Im not sure it could do 250k of outback travel.

  • What's a good new affordable and reliable small SUV, if road safety is the priority?

  • Would an MG3 Excite (the new one people) be better than a Kia Picanto?

    has anyone compared the two?

Most seem to be quite negative on the old MG3 but I do not care for another bad review on an old car…

  • Built by serfs

    • -2

Says someone who has clearly never been to China. The salary and lifestyle of a typical Chinese skilled worker in a big city (where these cars are made) is not hugely different from the lifestyle of a typical inner suburb worker in Oz. Holidays and all. It's just a bit more crowded, though with much better public transport.

      • I've been to China a few times. It's not a bad place to visit (but not live).

Despite all of what you list, they're still serfs of the CCP. Add to that the suppression of minorities, murder of their own people, Taiwan etc.

I'll buy cars made by free people - but you do you.

  • -5

This car is good value for someone who looks to drive casually and for someone who wants to do grocery shopping etc. based on reviews this car is just average. Does any car expert can tell me what’s the best car to buy that doesn’t cost too much and has loads of features and performs well?

  • -1

I test driven this, and you get what you pay for (for the record I drive a bimmer, and it's true there, too). but zoom out and look at what others are offering at similar price, brand new, and this is not bad. awesome to have a cheap drive-able option in this economy that doesn't feel like a death capsule when you get inside

  • +6

Good luck Toyota, Hyundai with such pricing.

    • +1

Australia is a small market. Why would the Japanese and South Korean governments subsidise their cars for sale in Australia, like CCP does?

      • Why on earth would the CCP subsidise sales to such a small market? Chinese cars in Australia are considerably DEARER than the very same cars are in China. If they are being subsidised for export you would get exactly the opposite (as it was when the Japanese and Koreans were developing export markets).

Claims of unfair subsidies and dumping are always what happens when people can't compete. They're almost always exaggerated at best and simple lies at worst.

        • +2

Why on earth would the CCP subsidise sales to such a small market?

It's not an Australian specific subsidy, it's currency manipulation that affects all foreign exchange to try to keep prices low to try and destroy competition. (ie a trade war with the West)

Claims of unfair subsidies and dumping are always what happens when people can't compete.

Competition implies you are on a level playing ground. It's hard to complete with people who are cheating.

They're almost always exaggerated at best and simple lies at worst.

Just because you have no idea does not make something a lie

Hate the CCP but love their car offerings. Their prices are competitive/ low vs everyone’s else going up.

    • -2

Be careful do not say that you hate the LIKUD but love their diamond offerings ;)

    • +1

They love your money — keep feeding them.

  • D'oh!

  • Do these have remote AC?

    • They're not EVs they're basic ICE cars of the sort that old guys keep saying they want instead of "this new fangled tech". Cars sold mainly as an economical everyday buzz box for commuting don't do that sort of thing.

  • +3

    Great deal. Thanks OP.

If anyone can help and have done a physical comparison, how does this model compare with Haval GWM Jolin in terms of quality and drive? The pricing is very similar (base Jolin $23,990 for ABN buyers). Thanks in advanced.

    • +9

Ya driven jolion and Chery tiggo 4 pro.

Both Chery Tiggo 4 and GWM Haval joilion drive much better than MG ZST vibe advertised here. Chery and Jolion are both turbo 1.5 engines versus the MG advertised here which is 1.5 litre naturally aspirated..The MG just has less power.

My favourite to drive was the Chery Tiggo 4 pro. Snappy engine with CVT transmission (reasonable- as good as CVT gets). The jolion has dual clutch transmission which can be a little hesitant on acceleration at start up if you don’t press the accelerator smoothly.

As to quality I liked all 3 cars( for the price point). The Chery Tiggo 4 had the best interior followed by the GWM Haval Joilion and very close 3rd was MG ZST. Although that opinion is very subjective. Really all 3 have very nice interiors. I think that is one aspect Chinese cars do much better than the Japanese or Koreans.

Drive all 3 to compare and make up your own mind. Thing I liked about the MG ZST was the 360 cameras

Video below shows 360 camera in use in new model

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJ3qqwi9XIQ

Or at 18.19 min the 360 camera in operation in current model

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EoyBdsYjuKc&t=1096s

360 cameras are incredibly useful if you do a lot of parallel parking. Or live in the city where millimetres can mean getting parking spot or not.

The $24000 versions of both Chery and Haval jolion don’t have 360 cameras from memory need go $27000 version both cars.

      Good luck

  • I'm going to wait until they are practically begging you to take a 2024 MG4 off their hands.

    • +4

or perhaps when they increase their price you'll be begging them to bring the price back down to this price

  • +3

soon, the iphone will be 30k and a new car will be 10k

1997 Kia Sportage auto with air = $28,990
    MG ZST = $11,000 (in 1997 dollars)

The Sportage had a 2.0L and 4WD though, but still pretty impressive.

    • It would be a bit tricky comparison since the specific year that you've mentioned is the year of bankruptcy for KIA due to Asian financial crysis

  • +3

Been driving one of these the past few days, it's brilliant value for an A-B car.
However the CVT and acceleration has a lag / springy type response to the throttle.
Definitely not as refined as the rav but that's tolerable for the price

  • +3

We need cars like these or else we would be paying $45k for a slightly used 2019 Corolla. I still remember 2 years ago, the salesman at the Toyota dealership telling me $60k for a Corolla if I wanted it delivered within 3 months and he said it with a straight face. Personally the only Chinese brand I would buy is GWM because they seem the most 'grown up' but all of them are decent for what they are priced at.

  • Whilst this is the best deal on an ICE car - perhaps ever, there are forecasts that EV batteries will decrease in price 50% by the end of 2026. So I am holding off.

I will keep my 2006 bomb on gas that I bought for $4500 six years ago and has had zero mechanical issues going a little longer, and hopefully nab an EV for 25k in 2 years, that would be better still.

    • hopefully nab an EV for 25k in 2 years, that would be better still.

Not going to happen in 2 years. More like 8-10 years when ICE cars are phased out - Hybrids even longer. In 2 years you will see BEVs with solid state batteries. Prices won’t change much

      • Well we have already had the Dolphin for 30k and MG4 excite for 31k when it was on special.

Doesn't seem like too much of a stretch to think prices could fall 1/6th more.

        • Possibly with clearance stock but not the current MY

  • -1

Is says ~$22888, when i click on "more info" it says from ~$28k?

    • I don't see "more info" anywhere. You need to fill out a form if you want to take up the offer. Click on the link in the deal.

The Chinese are very smart and their plan of world domination is working whether you like it or not. All their products are sheep in wolves clothing. Make an item appear of high quality using the cheapest possible parts. They work in high volume, low price, instead of low volume, high price. Back it up with a warranty that's much better than their competition and that's it, market share taken. I'm happy to be honest because it will stop the rest of the car manufacturers from charging whatever they want for a car that's not worth anywhere near its asking price. Let's see what this influx of Chinese cars will do to shake up the market.

    • +2

If the parts are so low in quality it would cost them a lot to honour a 10 year warranty, as it won't be reliable. And they still have to pay Australian labour to fix it.

      • While the Chinese are making a name for themselves in the automotive industry,

especially hybrids/BEVs, they will be aiming for quality at lower than competitors pricing. Once they dominate, the Chinese will have a lion share of the market*. A new equilibrium will be established among the surviving brands, and prices will be stabilised once again.

Those brands that do survive would have endured the trials and tribulations of making their own battery technology for mass production, which they are currently a decade behind the Chinese. The Japanese are currently going through this process.

It’s going to be brutal in the next decade and expect some well known brands to be completely wiped out. For the buyers, it’s never going to be a better time to buy a brand new electric vehicle at a bargain price!

The Americans will do everything they can to stop this from happening via tariffs etc. while convincing other countries to do the same

      • by then they have a ton of market share, and most people give up waiting months for a repair and just pivot by selling their car

numerous ways of working around a long warranty

        • Depends on the issue but the vast majority of issues don't stop the car from being used.

  • +1

My partner had 20-25k to spend on a second hand car and a few weeks ago we looked at a few local car yards to see what they had. The only cars around the 20k mark were out of warranty and looked pretty worn. Unbelievable that for pretty much the same money you can now buy a brand new SUV with 10 years warranty.

    • Hmm, you're in a remote/regional town, and going to a car yard… of course the prices are going to be jacked up. Try searching private sellers in major cities. I simply can't believe that you can't get a decent 2nd hand car for 20 grand.

      What's wrong with this 2022 Koleos that's done only 41k? https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/details/2022-renault-koleos…

      • We bought a 2018 Skoda Superb privately from Sydney. Fully optioned, fully serviced, one owner and only 100,000km for $18,500. Also came with two dealer services remaining as part of a service plan.

The point I was making was that dealers are asking for similar money for older run down second hand cars as what you can now buy a brand new car.

  • Hmm, if the Vibe is $22,888 then how much is the base Core?

  • I can't find a ANCAP safety rating for the MG ZST (this car on sale).
Does that mean it hasn't been accessed for safety?

  • Going to replace my Toyota this year, thanks OP.
