BYO Number Issues

Hello, I have been with Optus for more than 20 years now, opened my account when I turned 16.

I started my business about 7 years ago and use my work phone for 90% of my day-to-day. My personal SIM is sitting in my dual sim phone receiving verification texts and that's all.

I called Optus today to ask if they had a very simple sim-only plan that was not costing me $60 a month and they said..

Congrats on the 20-plus years with us…. no .. if you want to keep the number active you need to stay on a plan.

That sounds wrong, so my question is.

What's the best option for a sim only that's cheap as chips and reliable (I'm currently using Telstra for my business.)?

Can I just move my number to the new provider? I'm not in a contract with Optus, that ran out 20 years ago. I'm month to m month now.

Do I speak with the new provider and they organise it all for me?

Buy a sim card with the new provider you select
    Go through the activation process
In that process it will ask you if you want to bring your number across(port), select yes
Once activated, swap out the sim card and your done

You will need to keep the old SIM card in a phone as they’ll send you a text confirming the port request

If you do not respond to it, your port order will fail

  • Port it out

This is not wrong but just that the cheapest post paid sim only plan they offer is $52/month.

You should port to a cheaper reseller or could at least be able to change to an optus prepaid plan for $35 every 28 days and set up auto recharge if you want to stay with Optus.

  • Can I just move my number to the new provider?

Yes you can. Many options already listed to move the number to.

Congrats on the 20-plus years with us

There is no loyalty these days.

  • If only to receive texts,

Aldi mobile $5 up front for 60 days, then $15 recharge that lasts 1 year.

Wait, you want to change your personal mobile or business mobile?

This is basically Telstra’s whole business model.
Hoping people don’t realise their $60/m service is available for $9/m elsewhere.
Seems like its working if it takes years and years to get around to investigating the competition.
