While the standard mud cake has a thin layer of standard icing on the top only, the Valentine’s Day version had been covered with rich chocolate ganache, by hand, on all sides.

A team member then drew a love heart decoration in icing on top of each individual cake, taking considerable time.

It’s purchased for birthday parties and office gatherings. Now, the brand is celebrating National Mud Cake Day. It revealed Aussies buy one cake every five minutes from the supermarket, stacking up to 2.6 million every year.

For over 30 years, Woolworth’s mud cakes have been a beloved treat for Australians. Our classic chocolate mud cake, with its rich ganache and white chocolate drizzle, remains a customer favourite,” Laura McLeod, Woolworths cake category manager, told news.com.au.

This is part of Valentine's Day Sales for 2025.

      Are these cakes made in Europe, frozen and shipped to Australia and "defrosted for your convenience" or made in Australia?

        The website says "Made in Australia from at least 89% Australian ingredients". Only available in Woolworths stores with an in-store bakery.

        I used to manage an in store bakery and we made them ourselves.
        A 12.5 kg bag of mix, eggs, oil, water and a little bit of a liquid chocolate that made them dark and rich. The bag mix already has chocolate in it.
        Once baked and cooled, they are dipped in ganache made in a pot with cream and chocolate pieces.
        White chocolate it used to do lines and writing.

        In the old days we'd make the white ones too, but they soon started coming in frozen like the caramel.

    Brilliant. So the plan is, wait until about 2-3 days AFTER vday, when the unsold cakes are about to reach their best-by date, and pick them up for about $2. Not only a good price, but stick it to Colesworth, if that appeals.
