Any AirTag separated for a period of time from its owner will emit a sound when it's moved. Is this same case for samsung smartTag 2?

    • +2

Similar but not the same (it notifies the owner if the tag is beyond range). However AirTag's anti-stalking & separation alerts can be inconvenient in certain legitimate use cases, such as monitoring car given to kids for short-term use or tracking school kids without their knowledge (for safety).
Samsung provides location tracking through the SmartThings Find network, which allows users to locate lost items or tags (with better precision)

This info is about AirTags. Please never use this unless it's for your own personal items. You are able to modify an AirTag and remove its speaker. I did it for one in a storage locker and it gets location updates by the workers at the storage facility.
Users will still be mentioned that there is a nearby tag after a while (you need an app for that on android). I don't believe this is as useful as the chirping from a speaker on the unit.

Is this compatible with other android phones like the pixel

    • +4

      No

Get something like https://chipolo.net/en/products/chipolo-one-point for compatible android wise. I have this, it's not as good as airtag but not as bad as I had expected

      • I read all android phones doesn't turn on the support by default making them useless. Is that true?

        • No it's on by default but the default setting is a more crippled mode where tracking basically only turns on in busier areas with lots of people. Presumably some anti stalking measure.

It's no airtag (I have an airtag so I also have airtags) but it works well enough that I would buy more if I need it.

Downside is there's barely any third party accessories for it

          • @lawyerz: May I ask what's your use case for having both types?
Anything the airtags don't do well?

            • @jp1011: no, i got the airtags way earlier before google find my network was even available and it took years and years for them to roll it out (and even when it did, it was a dumpster fire at launch).

The only thing that airtags dont do well? only compatible with apple stuff.

              • @lawyerz: So just stick to airtags if given the choice?

                • @jp1011: absolutely. i would, if i had an iphone. dont carry an ipad with me everywhere, esp while travelling. airtags 2 rumoured to be coming soon though, wait for that if you're not in a rush to get more

                  • @lawyerz: Thanks for the insight!

                    • +2

@jp1011: just to be clear, i am talking about the airtags vs google find my network (not this deal - samsung smarttag2, which is on its own network separate to google). Heard good things about the samsung tags, never used them before but I would prefer not being locked into samsung's ecosystem.

      • Thank you!

      • I've heard mixed things but I had high hopes. Surely these work better than the Samsung Tags??

        • +2

At the moment no, Samsung tags are still (significantly?) superior to the Google find my network, because google completely fumbled that one.

        • They're fine. I used during throughout my US trip and still use them now. I also use Pebblebee to track my other belonging here in Sydney. Haven't had any issues yet.

I think me people need to realise, the more people use them and opt into the high accuracy functioning needed for these trackers, the better the network gets.

      • Is $165 sale price ? Or do they go cheaper?

  • Been on the look out for this at this price point, thanks OP

  • Are these any good for security tracking? Eg slipping in the tv legs or car's spare tire bay?

  • I use both android and Apple ecosystem. Is this better or air tag? Price wise, I find this cheaper.

    • Air tag battery lasted upto 2 years for me.

      • +1

SmartTag 2 is better in all aspects (best range rating 9 vs AirTag 3, longer batt) other than ~ network, not as many Samsung users. With Samsung AI superiority might change)
        https://www.techgearlab.com/topics/cool-gadgets/best-bluetoo…

        • @deal-cracker is asking for Android in specific, so not sure if samsung works on other devices, Moto works on all android phones

          • @hopper: Unfortunately, Samsung plays the same dirty Apple locking game to exploit customers. I'm "locked" to the S-pen "Nothing Compares 2 S23U…" ;) so better value/functionality vs AirTag. For universal potential useability Chipolo One with ~>2x the price :( Android 7+ or iOS 12+)
Tile is the other reasonable & cheaper alternative

  • Bought :) thanks OP

  • +2

Tracking wise i find these more accurate than Airtags. But the battery life seems to be a bit shorter. Both work well.

  • I've had better luck with tiles. The question "is my bag on the plane" can't be answered with the smart tag unless you have internet.

The range is slightly better on the smart tag and the battery life is very much so. But that's probably due to the bigger (and much cheaper to buy) battery.

Looking for a tracker for my caravan, has anyone used it for something similar?

  • Anyone ever use this for their doggos when youre away on hols and they're at their grandmas?

    • +1

I have one on my dog's collar permanently. Works well.

  • Cool feature - these can be linked to any Smart Things device such that a button press will do something.

    • Is the control through the linked mobile in range?

  • I have had these recently and tbh I am not impressed. Update is not frequent and it defeats the purpose.
I had it in my son's bag so that I can go and pick him at bus stop when he is approaching but his location doesn't get updated frequently.

    • +1

If samsung tag supports google find my device network, then it to be the best. Till then this work work will in places where you have good samsung mobile users

      • +1

Yeah it’s a pity they’re so walled-gardened by their creator… let the tag out of its cage Samsung 🤭

      • Issue is not about Samsung mobile users around the tag but tag location update doesn't happen in real time.
I have found better solution for my case is the Life360 App.

  • I bought one tag from the same seller a week ago and works great but can't share device with others. This is because the model is Korean maybe but not AU even though the Amazon webpage states the model number ending with AU. You can still use it and it works fine for me, just again can't share device with others.
Check Centrecom they got one for $35.

    • Hmmmm… Thats a bit frustrating. I bought a pack at lunchtime but would have reconsidered, based on this info.

If true, I wonder if any other features are missing?
