  • Just out of interest, can you take this size into the cabin? Or does it need to be checked in? Cheers.

Carry on for Qantas is limited to 56cm long x 36cm wide x 23cm deep
      https://www.qantas.com/au/en/travel-info/baggage/carry-on-ba…

    • Yes, this is hand carry size

    • Just be careful with some budget airlines in Asia. They’ve started downsizing to 40x30x20.
      Eg.
      https://en.ch.com/flights/excess-baggage
We got caught with this exact samsonite luggage while traveling into China. Had to check it in.
Interestingly, their inflight duty free just happened to sell their own “compliant” cabin luggage. 🙄

      • Nice found!!

      • Spring airlines is the Ryanair of Asia. I haven't flown them but one commenter online said you should never, ever fly them.

So many Chinese carriers are still cheap and include checked bag for free, that's why I am flying home from Thailand with a holiday in Chengdu/Chongqing

      • Not just in Asia.

Three of the most popular budget carriers in Europe - Easyjet, Ryanair and Vueling - have reduced their (free) carry-on sizes to 45 x 36 x 20 cm and 40 x 25 x 20 cm and 40 x 30 x 20 cm respectively. All three are different - what a mess.

Personally haven't seen anyone get their bag measured in the past couple of years, but I'm sure it happens if you try and push your luck.

Why do peoplenspend this much for a suitcase

    • +2

Indeed. I wouldn't pay more than maybe $80 for this one sale. I bought an expensive 55 cm Samsonite luggage and the wheels dragged poorly and the balance was off

    • +11

Weight (lack of, maximise the included allowance for flights), reliability as bags cop a hard life when used a lot.
I have one (Samsonite) that's been checked every flight for more than a decade now, its now past 1 million miles flown and is still fine apart from a dent in one corner (not huge), a few scratches and a lot of bag tag stickers all over it.
Money well spent, would buy again.
      Original wheels, handles, zips, locks.

      • Wow! Felt like you described my Samsonite exactly (down to the dent in one corner, miles and stickers). The missus gave me grief when I paid over $400 for it but has since been insisting on replacing all of our suitcases with this.

    • +4

Part of the reason is it's the lowest weight possible for a sturdy suitcase. Whether saving a kilo on suitcase weight is worth several hundred is another question.

    • +2

The funniest are the lengths people go to "protect their investment" by paying even more money for special bespoke covers. Most of these people also proudly show off their 'his' and 'hers' matching designer bags proudly perched on top. Absolutely insane seeing people travel like this, suitcases should be as cheap as you can that it gets bumped around and the wheels still keep working. I guess in the end, each to their own.

    • 6 years ago I was in China and got myself a $25 check-in sized luggage, survived however many times of the good old airport abuse and works just fine.

For $375, you're basically paying $300 to the brand name, the company's bottom line, its investor's dividend etc, $25 for a slightly stylish-er design, $25 for the global warranty network, then the same $25 to whichever supplier that won their OEM contract, which probably is the same one that made my cheap luggage.

I'd rather just skip the middle man, buy a good quality generic brand and save myself 300 bucks.

Lucky you. I needed an extra suitcase once and borrowed a cheapie Chinese hardshell which looked totally fine when I packed it. One flight later I couldn't recognize it on the carousel as a corner cracked so badly that one of the airports wrapped it up in plastic.

  • Hard Shell has fallen out of favour. FAs recommend fabric these days.

They recommend because it’s easier for them to handle? Is the recommendation to benefit them?

    • All good unless you want to protect anything fragile or squashable.

this can't be a deal! too expensive

  • +2

$375, why would anyone pay that much for a hand carry other than just for a show-off.
    Not a deal at all.

    • +6

Nobody is showing off a samsonite. The show off luggage are Rimowa or Tumi and they start in the thousands

  • +1

Can I sit on this and it will drive me around, otherwise why is it so expensive.

  • +5

When it comes to carry on. It's all about low weight to cram in as much stuff for your holiday with a 7kg limit for carry on, this is decent but expensive, I got one from kmart that's also weighs 2.1 kilos for $40, it's going strong after 9 international trips. I dont see 9x more value with this bag, if you had to check it in and worry about it being broken by baggage handlers or the conveyer belts then sure …..

    • If your holiday destination involves a lot of walking and/or cobblestone pavement or uneven surfaces, you'd also want a carry-on bag with really good sturdy wheels. You can also slide on some backpacks onto the handle so you don't have to carry it on your back which adds more stress to the wheels.

If it's just to wheel around an airport straight into a waiting car that drops you off at a hotel, then it's not as important.

  • If only there was a light, sturdy, good looking suitcase…that nested :(

  • It was below $300 when I last bought it

  • +1

Lol $375 for a 55cm suitcase is now considered a deal.. What kind of dystopian hyper-inflated future are we living in? I bought a Samsonite 68cm in December 2021 for $146.

    • I’ll just get into my Time Machine then

      • +1

        The 75cm was $167 on 24/01/25 - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/890248

This was sold out quickly but I was able to grab 68cm and 75cm Samsonite Volantes for $175 and $187 respectively.

The 55cm Volante is currently $175 (Iconic and Amazon) making this definitely a no deal.

That’s a completely different suitcase though. It’s like saying ‘no deal’ on a BMW M5 because you can get a 520 cheaper

          • @dtc: It's saying 'no deal' on a BMW M5 because you bought an MG ZS.

          • @dtc: That analogy is shocking. They're both Samsonite brand. And who'd want a BMW anyway? European rubbish cars.. 😂

          • +1

            @dtc: Except
            A. No one cares what type of luggage you have
            B. They literally both do the same job and get trashed anyway

As long as it's not some el cheapo kmart luggage I doubt there's much discernible difference esp if it's a carry on

  • +1

This is the only carry-on suitcase I use. Lightweight and you can stuff so much inside without making it bigger like those softside suitcases. And it's durable too

For this price I prefer July. Much better looking

    • +3

      2.1kg for this vs 3.4kg

  • I will jump at this if it is a 75cm, not a deal for a 55cm as if I need something light, I use my Skylite bought from Strandbag which weight only 1.8kg.

    • +1

1.8kg sounds amazing, which model of Skylite is that?

  • +3

The Samonsite Lite-Shock Sport 55cm is a bit lighter at 1.7kg and is available at the same price.

  • Modern carry on case have multi purpose like flip cup holder, power bank, mobile stand built in the luggage cover and handle bar at a very cheap price and replaceable wheels. Also, hardly someone check the weight of you hand carry today!

    • Jetstar randomly checks and charges $75 for anything over 7kg at the gate at regional airports.

I like carry-ons with coffee holders but they weight over 3kg, AliExpress has many interesting options

  • Like the Samsonite Soft Cabin bag, 55 Spinner 73H with its full depth external lockable pocket for a laptop. Still many security checks required removal of laptops. Weight 1.9kg , 24cm depth so theoretically doesn't meet 23cm restriction, 10 yr warranty, only seems to come in grey. Cost $239

  • Just flew Melbourne and back on Qantas using a 100gram bluey showbag I grabbed from the pile of schoolbags my child has.
Bargain part was this $25 showbag came with bluey stickers and fake bluey ear headband, which is fun to wear when drunk.

My same suitcase bought from MYER is broken after a few of travel. The two plastic joint were broken apart . It is still ok to travel.
