Would It Be Ok to Use This Booster Chair for 6 Year Old in Uber?

Due to personal circumstances, I will need to rely on Uber for school drop off (single morning trip). Currently we use this seat in a personal car but it appears big to carry on return walking trip (1km).

Would it be Ok to use this booster chair for 6 Year Old in Uber?

My wife (Occupational Therapist working with kids with disabilities) shakes her head. She said those backless ones are no longer compliant, i.e. illegal. That is why you can only find them on dodgy listings.

We use these ones as our back ups. https://www.babybunting.com.au/product/britax-safe-n-sound-t…. Still large but light weight.

The second link - from eBay - is the one I was referring to.

Any reason you can't get the uber to drop you back home? Or just walk both ways?

      This. It's 1km each way…. That's like 10-12 minutes walk.

    • Agreed, OP would be better to get a stroller or something and walk the kid to school and back. Save a heap of money!

    1) Backless booster seats do not meet the Australian Safety Standards and are not legal to use in Australia. All child car seats to be used in Australia must comply with the Australian Standards AS/NZS 1754.

    but

    2) Booster cushions are legal to use providing they complied with the Australian standard AS/NZS 1754 at the time of manufacture.
so generally only the old second hand ones are compliant. I suspect the new ones in ebay link are not.

Those Infa-secure ones fold flat and are pretty light, bugger all difference in carrying effort over 1 km vs the ebay link.

My then 3 year old walked a lot more than 1km regularly. Surely a six year old can walk 1km twice a day. Or buy the kid a bike to ride to school (and you walk along of course) and park it there.

    • Or buy the kid a bike to ride to school (and you walk along of course)

This only works effectively until your kid can ride the bike properly. Not long before mum/dad is puffed out sprinting alongside your child!

Then you buy a bike for yourself.

Not sure what the obsession with driving kids to school is these days - record low numbers of kids walking to school, and it's just horrible around every school during pick-up and drop-off.

I lived around 1km away from my primary school back in the day, and my mum walked me to school from the very first day when I was 5 years old. Was around a 15 min walk, and I actually enjoyed getting the energy out before the school day.

    • Obesity is real in Australia.

Also shiny polished RAMs and the like at school drop off queue is also problematic.

Getting an Uber to travel 1km ?!?!?

    • Maybe OP had a medical condition, or is an elderly that is dropping grand kids?

Unfortunately the soccer mums in well polished paintwork RAMs are leading to a lot of the negative assumptions in this thread.

      • Exactly

Op asked for some specific advice here, people would rather make some wild assumptions and judge the op. I see this behaviour all the time. I don’t get it though.

      • But OP can walk home carrying a car seat?

          • @Gervais fanboy: But OP stated they will walk home!

I don’t get it, Op’s paying for the uber from their own pocket.
Why are people here acting like the op’s living off their money?

@Gervais fanboy: I guess I was the first person to ask so will answer your question.

I was just curious to what situation would lead to the parent getting an uber one way to the school then having to walk home carrying a car seat. Without any context from the OP the simplest way would be to get a round trip in the uber or walk both ways.

Without any context from the OP

Maybe that was because Op wasn’t looking for people advising her to just ‘walk back home’.
The eBay booster seat is apparently not legal anymore, op has to get one with a back fitted to it. Probably the one from Kmart will do. Simple,

We all know that's not how these types of forums work.

OP was the one that mentioned walking home.

Sometimes people dont think outside the box and it takes a random internet person for them to recognise that perhaps if they can walk home, there are alternative to getting junior to school in a car.

Thanks for clearly stating that as I too was suspecting you and a few others here having that impression of the op.
It’s like you assuming that just maybe op is dumb for not asking the advice that you can offer them.

  • Do kids still need car seats once they are 6 years.

It's been a long time since the MD Kinder were small, but I'm pretty sure we couldn't even fit three car seats across middle seat or back seat.

They had bassinets type ones that faced back seat when they were first born, then progressed to forward facing ones when they could sit up, but can't remember any of mine using booster sests by the time they went to school. That's just asking for the big kids to flush your head and give you nuggies.

  • Thanks everyone for your input.
