Nikon SB-400 SPEEDLIGHT for $120 at Ted's Cameras Online - Save $80

110

Bought one of these for my Dad for Xmas (and one for myself too!). At $120 this is a good price for a good flash. Cheapest I've seen on staticice etc is $188. They have a few other speedlights for sale too, so have a look around. Review here: http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/sb400.htm

  • This has actually been up for a while, but I'm still astounded how Ted's can offer it so cheap compared to everyone else!

  • downside is if you shoot in portrait instead of landscape, the light is harder to bounce off the ceiling.

    • Agree (I have both an SB400 and SB600) but it's light, very effective indoors, and only takes 2 batteries. Personally I grab the SB600 every time, but even second hand it's still around twice the price of this SB400 NEW!

      • I too have the SB-600, and the swivel and tilt of the head is great. Also much cheaper than the SB-800. But to improve the quality of indoor and dark shots, this SB-400 is bang for buck.

I also find the off flash capabilities of the SB-600 very useful too, but this SB-400 probably won't have it, but then it's not aimed at that market.

Also when people drop big money for lenses, you have to let them know that putting money into lighting would have probably been a better option!

  • It would make for a good slave though right? Dunno if it even acts as a slave.

    Doesn't matter cause I am a Canon user. :)

I got mine the other day, so here is my $0.02.

It's very compact and portable - something I consider really important as I want to take good photos but don't want to be burdened by constantly lugging around heavy equipment.

It can be tilted 90 degrees for bounce flash (where the light of the flash "bounces" off the roof of the room you are in - creating a more natural photo). Keep in mind though that the flash doesn't swivel (making it hard to use bounce flash for portrait pictures), and there are no fancy functions - something more avid photographers should consider.

But in terms of picture quality, this little unit does exactly what it is designed for - flash! It drastically increases the quality of your photos when compared to your conventional flash. Great for people who won't do super-tricky things with flash, but want to improve the quality of their photos in a cost-effective way.

Just ordered one. Found a promotion code PayPal5 after I ordered - it further takes 5% off

    • You should post that as a new deal!

      • It's actually has already been posted before here, although that coupon code has already been marked as expired…

Maybe it's a good idea to try expired code as well.

  • In store, they check out for…$115. And according to the guy at the store, they have "cartons" of them out back. He was quite surprised when I mentioned Teds was about 30% cheaper than anywhere else.

    • I went to the store to buy one - none left in Melbourne CBD.

The Online order process is not flash - after you pay for the order, apparently it will only be picked overnight and someone will apparently get back to you before you can go and collect one!

…mmm I am waiting for my call!
