Anyone who has used mycar can comment on how good it is?

Heard some real shockers but seeing if anyone has recent experience

    • I've gone to them a couple times to service my BYD (both at different locations). Both were fine, I didn't have any complaints.

    • +14

It would depend on the place. They’re franchises, so some will be good some will be bad. Look at the reviews of your local mycars

    • +1

Can't fault their free tyre puncture repairs on tyres purchased from them. Had a slow leak. Drove up, guy inspected it, said it was repairable. Left the car there for about 45mins. Came back and collected the car.

      • I had this too, it was on the sidewall so it was replaced for free. In saying that, the 2 mycars I went to (my usual one) and the one they sent me to cos my regular store didn't have stock, they weren't very clear and seemed a little annoyed about having to change the tyre for free.

    • +6

Their wheel alignment service is top shelf.

      • I dont even bother with wheel alignments anymore as I still managed to get 50K out of my last set.

        • i would be really unhappy if I only got 50,000 out of a set of new Tyres I got 80,000 out of my Bridgestone AT697
          .

          • @hooray: Depends on the driving style. 50K for me is good. My dad gets 70K out of his without an alignment as well.

    • +5

They took over from KTAS (Kmart Tyre and Auto), probably just a change of shirt for the mechanics.

Long story short I complained that a logbook service I had done (through KTAS) missed out a lot of the logbook service items.

The regional managers response was "How can we be expected to know every cars manufacturers logbook service requirements". The car I had service was Mitsubishi Lancer, hardly an exotic overseas car.

      • +1

then they should not say they are doing the logbook, same experience I had when the mycar store manager googled to find the logbook requirements for my vehicle, didn’t get my business.

        • +8

At least he attempted to follow the manufacturer’s standard

        • +3

You expected him to have memorised the log book requirements for your car?

          • @dtc: Honestly you’d think they would keep database locally for quicker access at least for mainstream cars or at least have them bookmarked on the web browser.

            • +1

@Save 50 Cent: Why though? Google takes them to the manufacturers site with the latest updates version of the manual. Quicker than sorting through 75 bookmarks and ensures their database isn’t outdated

      • To be fair, maybe people should be posting the location if they have a complaint?

    • +2

      Horrible. Avoid.

Went to my car in Inalloo in WA for normal logbook service. They had my car overnight because they said I needed a new timing kit. Picked up car and they said flippantly “an error has come up but only dealer can remove it, it’s to do with the DPF, and will go away once you drive for a while”

2 weeks later after error still not going away I go back to mycar and they deny ever saying anything about error. Said they can look at car for $150. I walk out.

I take car to Holden. They investigate and mechanic tells me that timing kit was fitted completely wrong. Circa $1800 down the drain. They were rude and wrong.

      • Generally if a timing kit is fitted completely wrong the results are catastrophic for interference engines. You may have been had twice.

      • Had a Kia Carnival 2015 Mycar Innaloo broke the fuel sensor level indicator during a logbook service. I'd use them for a basic service drop oil and filters but anything out of the ordinary I'd avoid.

But saying that they eventually did make good the repair after 3x visits after I made a trip to Kia dealer who told me they 99% would of put it in reverse.

  • Sweet. Can this be applied to BYD EV log book servicing?

    • What log book servicing needs to be done on an EV? What do they do? Change the plugs??? I'd think tyre rotation, alignment, refill the washer fluid and replace wiper blades would be about the max they could do.

      • Yeah the servicing costs on EVs outside of Teslas is a joke.

      • Brake fluid check/replace.
Ditto for the reduction gearbox fluid.
Probably some kind of coolant, not 100pc sure on that.

    • +1

@serpserpserp No - The servicing of the following vehicle brands are excluded this offer due to the limited-service interval details provided by the original equipment manufacturer: BMW, MINI, MERCEDES-BENZ, LAND ROVER, MG, PORSCHE, MERCEDES-AMG, BMW M, TESLA, FERRARI, ASTON MARTIN, BENTLEY, LAMBORGHINI, ROLLS ROYCE, MCLAREN And BYD.

  • +1

Can this be used with BYD logbook service? When I try to book through MyCar it redirects me to www.autoguru.com.au so wanted to check the $100 discount email will still come through.

  • +4

    Avoid tyre alignment lol

    • As someone who doesn't know anything about cars, I just go by the books on what is recommended, and tyre alignment is one of them. Curious as to why we should avoid it?

  • I wouldn't recommend the one in Canberra. They quoted for an extra $1000 of with we needed to do that we know wasn't really necessary. Save your money and do to Dickson instead.

    • I haven't lived in Canberra a while, but surely there are quite a few branches? Is there a specific one you're saying to avoid?

      • +2

Fair point. We went to the branch in Braddon that had really good google reviews. We used to go to DMB in Dickson but switched to take advantage of the last time they ran this offer. We won't ever use them again.

    • I’ve used the one in Braddon for the last 10 years. No complaints or over servicing and the cars haven’t had any issues.

Btw you can’t just assume because mechanic 1 says ‘you need this work’ and mechanic 2 says ‘you don’t’ that mechanic 2 is correct. Maybe they are and maybe they didn’t look or didn’t appreciate there will be a problem in 6 months time.

  • +3

My personal experience with my local shopping centre mycar, is that the are a volume business; lots of garage bays and apprentices, low care and attention to detail, and tries to upsell.

I do buy tyres from them since they price match and their end of year Pirelli deals are great.

  • Didn't have logbook details online on 2022 Nissan Qashqai! What? Hard pass.

    • Same for a 23 X-Trail

  • +8

    Might be a fake deal.
They quoted me $678, less the discount was $578.
Midas (on Autoguru) want $495 and Ultratune want $442

    • +1

Do you know how much the actual dealer charges?

      • +2

It's a fairly old VW (12 years) and the dealer doesn't have the price on the website.

I thought two other chains were fair comparisions, especially seeming as they're in the same area.

        • -2

That’s a lot for an old car.

          • +1

@life is suffering: Major service. Oil, oil filter, brake fluid, coolant, cabin filter.
Normally it's in the 200-250 mark but German cars have expensive oil changes, there's just a lot of oil in the things.

            • @Zephyrus: Ah major service makes sense

            • @Zephyrus: oil + oil filter, coolant, air filter, and brake fluid are all things that should be done/checked every minor service.
major service should be things like water pump, timing belt/chain, etc. MUCH more expensive than $500-600

            • @Zephyrus: Good thing it's not a bmw. That additionally needs fairly expensive blinker fluid.

    • Yep least time I called for a quote to service a five year old Hyundai, mycar quoted about $100 more than getting it done at Hyundai.

  • +3

I think whether mycar is good or bad depends on the individual location.

I think in general they run a model similar to all the others ("Midas" well do your shocks as well) It would be hard to turn a profit otherwise just selling tyres. Upselling mechanical part replacements whilst doing every job the quick and easy way. Honestly these places have taken on a car dealership model, and what do you expect they are a business. Most of the time I think might be better off going to you normal car dealer brands than these big box servicing places. I think people have established the mindset that your ultratune, Midas, Mycar are cheaper than dealer servicing. But I've found it really not to be the case.

If you can find a good independent garage in your area where you can actually talk to the mechanic that's the way for sure. That way they know your coming back so they'll make money through additional jobs throughout the life of car when they are required. Rather than ambushing you every time you come in if you choose to switch all the time or go to the majors.

    • Agreed they're actually more expensive than some dealers. For example Honda only charges $200 per service on my CRV. Also adapative service items like brake fluid change, transmission fluid and fuel filter was far cheaper at my Honda too.

      • and at Honda it will be of superior quality as per manufacturer’s specifications.

        • Lol. Some apprentice will be working on your car at the Honda dealership.

    • True, best to avoid these big brand all purpose garages because they will not know details of each manufacturer and usually do a sloppy job. If you got non Euro cars then best to goto dealer car servicing, for Euro if you can afford then dealership or else an indie who is good at specific brands.

  • +3

If ICE car out of warranty, DIY service and save $100s.

    • Yeah agreed. I also think its good to be able to do the service when you want to the quality you want. I hate dropping cars down for the day and stuff every time I line it up it our family there's some spanner in the works. You never know what oil they used or for example whether they flushed the coolant or just dropped and changed what was in the radiator.

Also you can learn your car and pre-plan the bigger jobs so you aren't in for a shock. Things get expensive nowdays. A leaky tappet cover gasket can cost well over $400 at a mechanic.

Its not for everyone though. Its not 1980 anymore and multi-skilled people aren't as common as they were.

  • The servicing of the following vehicle brands are excluded this offer due to the limited-service interval details provided by the original equipment manufacturer: BMW, MINI, MERCEDES-BENZ, LAND ROVER, MG, PORSCHE, MERCEDES-AMG, BMW M, TESLA, FERRARI, ASTON MARTIN, BENTLEY, LAMBORGHINI, ROLLS ROYCE, MCLAREN And BYD.

    • Ohhhh nightmare, I was about to book in to get the Ferrari, Aston and Lambo serviced.

Luckily the McLaren was serviced last week at Ultra Tune.

      • +1

I just use the mechanic I have on retainer take care of my fleet, you should give it a go.

  • Mycar $100 off offer in NAB Goodies

  • +2

I asked for a quote for my 3rd gen Toyota Prius and it was $100 more than my Toyota dealer charges. So I don't think this is a genuine deal.

  • I went to my local one in the shopping center (Erina) for a pink slip, big mistake. They definitely try to squeeze everything they can from you. Quoted me $1200 on a list of things that I know my car (worth max $2000) does not need, said if I don't do it I will not get a pass on the rego check. I said no and went to another local shop on the same day, passed the check on the spot. I highly recommend that anyone considering ‘mycar’ avoid them. People who do not know anything about their car would easily fall for their scam.

  • +1

Mycar are franchises and from just the responses to this post some are fine and some are shonky ripoffs. Other reviews i have seen tell a similar story.
It looks to me that Mycar is just an advertising and administrative franchise and probably keeps out of any sort of QA for their franchisees.
That being the case I would be comparing their $100 off logbook cost to any other mechanic, and perhaps be asking about reliable mechanics in your area.

  • My 5 year old Forester is now out of warranty so I'm not too fussed about going back to Subaru. Next service is 60K k's which is basically an oil and filter change a look over everything.

One wouldn't think people could get too much wrong with that. Using their online booking the cost came out to $298 based on supplied rego, that was without the $100 off.

Could be tempted for this particular service.

My mate who is not a car person got quoted $38000 for the following servicing + 4 new tyres on a 2006 Honda Civic:

    1. Service was 30,000km overdue.
    2. Right rear brake globe holder is broken.
    3. Left front fog light is not working.
    4. Wipers are streaky.
    5. Engine was very low in oil running rough.
    6. Brake fluid failed test.
    7. Battery positive terminal is leaking.
    8. Air filter is dirty.
    9. Pollen filter is missing.
    10. Requires front and rear brakes very low in wear.
    11. Requires 4 tyres and a wheel alignment.
    12. Rear wheel bearings are noisy.

I said $3800 sounds about right for MyCar. He said no, they verbally told him $38000 lol.

    • Sounds like they didn't want to touch his car. It's called the "f*&$ off quote".

  • Lol, their quote for a logbook service for my 10 year old Toyota is $500+.

The dealership quoted $280 for the same service.

  • you couldn't pay me to get my car "serviced" at a place like this.
if you're out of the dealership warranty period, find a good independent mechanic.

  • Won't let me book online :(
