Ultimate Gift Card Blocked after Adding to Apple Wallet

I bought a $130 Ultimate gift card from someone on FB MP on 31/12/24. I was happy with the risk as he provided specific details to verify his personal identity, plus the 30% discount was worth the risk for me. It was an online transaction and once I paid the money and he provided the card details (pictures of both sides of the card). I was able to verify the balance & also add it to my Apple Wallet no problem. I told him to cut up the card so no one else could use it.

3 weeks later, I noticed that there was an issue with the card in my Apple Wallet. It had a message, something about contacting the card issuer for details. Similar error when I try to check the balance or exchange the card for an eGift.

I contacted Ultimate GC's who told me that the card was reported damaged on the 31st, and a block had been applied to it. I messaged the seller to see if he knew anything, both he and I tried to contact their support via phone & chat but long story short they won't do anything with the proof of purchase. The seller tells me that the person who gifted him the GC (Xmas present I assume) also gave him a receipt with it, but he hasn't been able to locate it.

I've tried asking support if adding the card to my Apple Wallet might've triggered an automatic block but they won't say. The timing seems very odd though.

He has said he's willing to provide a refund but I said I'd post it here just to see if anyone has any ideas or similar experiences.

Cheers

    https://www.ultimategiftcards.com.au/terms-conditions/ says:

    1. The Card cannot be replaced if misused, lost, stolen, or damaged.

    2. To protect yourself from being scammed and a victim of fraud, you should:
      Never purchase a Card through any private sales including but not limited to sales through social media platforms;
      Never provide Card numbers to any caller over the phone or by email;

    DO NOT provide your Bank Account BSB and Account number to receive the offered refund. If you want to receive the offered refund, allow them to Pay you via PayPal.

    • DO NOT provide your Bank Account BSB and Account number to receive the offered refund

      Just asking
      What’s the harm in doing that?

        A fraudster may have stolen someone's account to send you the money.

        • But it’s much harder to hack a PayPal account?

          • @Gervais fanboy: Getting money taken away from your paypal is better than having your bank account(s) frozen for being involved in fraud

            If you paid by bank transfer in the first place, the correct thing to do is actually to ask your bank to do an osko recall - or just don't buy suspicious things in the first place

    • I have a burner bank account I use to capture things like Cashrewards etc payments. I keep almost no money in it. Just wondering your views on the downsides of using this. Thanks.

    @mapax - here is a new variation of the theme.

    Days since ADAGCHS post = 0

    • Did I say 5 or 7 consecutive days of ADAGCHS and I’d have to change my username?

        Definitely 5

      Admittedly, didn't attend gift card high school?

  • So this is a gift card that was purchased third hand. What could possibly go wrong in that chain?

    Given the number companies folding without honouring cards I’m reluctant to buy directly from them let alone some random on the internet.

    I’m not sure how a receipt is going to help you either even if you can get it. If the person who purchased it on their account has claimed a replacement already I can’t see how anything will help you.

    Will be interesting to see if anyone has an answer and thanks for another warning on why not to do this.
