Why are the eSIM soooo expensive? 15Gb for 15 days at $40.50?

Why the neg? Have you seen a better price somewhere else that covers 53 countries? If yes, please post it.

I'll withdraw the neg. But why would an eSIM which does not require more plastic, manufacturing, packaging, printing, postage, labour to pack and send costs so many times more than a physical card?

        • Fair enough, but I believe they are different providers.

Also the price of a product has little to do with its cost. eSIMs are more convenient for international travel, therefore they are more expensive.

          • @bio: Yeah, its a f***ked up capitalist world. I need to get 4 eSIM for our first family trip to Europe and this pricing structure just doesn't make sense. We do not want physical SIM as we still need to receive SMS on our single SIM phones.

4X $21 for 12Gb for 30 days would have been perfect (except for 4G speed). 8X $40.50 for 30Gb for 30 days (we need 29 days) for the eSIM is no good

Buy 1 unlimited eSIM and use your phone (or a spare phone) as a hotspot for the other family members. Or buy a portable hotspot with a physical SIM.

@bio: Thanks, but they are independent adult kids that would literally DIE if they are thethered to me for 29 days! :)

                • @StopSpending: So you don't think it's a good way of family bonding?

        • 🤷‍♂️
My phone uses 2x physical sims and normally they seem to cost more than an equivalent esim. Not sure why Europe is different.

        • in my head while eSIM providers don't need to spend on manufacturing and logistics on physical SIMs, they do have other costs like commercial teams to strike up deals with various telcos around the world, foreign exchange fees and rates etc.

The time and stress I save at a foreign airport is pretty worth imo.

I can't see anything better on Airalo or TravelKon. Where do you normally get them from?

  • Anything for India please?

    • You should be able to get 'AIRTEL' sim(esim/physical) from the aiport you are landing in India using your passport. Cost will be less then 10$ for one month with plenty of data

  • Anyone know of a Vietnam physical Sim? Its $50 on that site…

    • My folks usually just get it sorted at one of the vendors at the airport. They'll help you install it and make sure its working before you continue with your trip.

I think normally Dad gets a Viettel sim… but he usually checks out all the options there and picks the best value offering that works for the trip.

  • No luck for me… I'm after a China eSim.

  • With the physical sim, will it be an issue if I only activate in December?
