I use the Gillette safety razor.

Don't get caught up in all the hype of expensive razors. I have used an expensive German one, way too aggressive for my skin, a $1 ancient no-brand thing I found in a flee market in Europe (used for 5 years and it was great), and now using a Gilette King C I found on OB a few years ago as my daily.

    • Q shave adjustable razor from Ali express. $10 or the no name equivalent for less. Might need to put something on the handle to help with the grip (tennis racquet handle grip is good). Adjustable so you can find the right level of aggression.

    • +3

You'll find shaving is a very personal thing so my trash may be your treasure. I need max aggression for my thick hairs so I use Muhle R41. I started off using the King C Gillette and found I needed much more aggression.

Merkur 34C and Edwin Jaeger DE89 are the most often recommended beginner ones. They are slightly more aggressive than the King C.
Yaqi Mellon is a very popular and cheap razor head (which you can buy a handle for cheaply) on Aliexpress.

The Q Shave Adjustable is a bargain for an adjustable so second that recc.

      • Personally I think the Rockwell 6C is easily the best one and done razor, also for a beginner. The 6 plate options mean it's unlikely that it will be too aggressive or not aggressive enough for whoever uses it. It's also just a really nice shave I've found, I keep coming back to it even though I have more expensive "nicer" razors.

    • get an DE safety razor and youre good. think mine was called mercure or something.

it was a deal from ozbargain

    • Merkur 34C

    • Thanks for all the replies - OzB has quite a lot of collective knowledge on razors!

I prefer he astra blades which work out to be a bit cheaper than these and are very very well reviewed https://amzn.asia/d/1vCIvAH.

    • +2

Been using Astra for about 8 years and they're great. Tried many others but none suited my skin

      • +1

I thought so as well. But now I have been de shaving for a while, after running out of astras I am going through the sample pack that I bought ages ago and they all work pretty good. I think it might be down to my lather getting better.

    • +1 for Astra, have tried a fair few others but they don't suit (Feathers for example I cut myself to shreds with).

    • $17.54 per 100

Or is your metro price different?

  • +5

    Feather or bust

    • I do like BIC more than Feather tbh.

      • Agree with this. 100 for $16 on Amazon.

      • +2

I hated my Bic they felt blunt. I stopped buying astra because Russia. Agree that feathers are awesome but not as a first blade for new users, very sharp. I can't even remember what I use at the moment because I've been using body trimmer on zero.

        • Interesting! I've always felt that BIC was very sharp, it works very well with me when I pair it with a comfortable milder razor.

          • @Castcore: Yeah I mean if they work they work. They are good value if so.

        • It is so subjective, isn't it! Ive tried KAI blades several times over the years, and never liked them - even though they are generally rated highly. Astra was good for me when I started ages ago, then Personnas. I'm lucky to have a good stash of Super Iridiums, and shift between a few blades I like these days. Razor blade club is a good source of a range of blades, delivered at a great price.

        • Astra's are now made in india thanks to the war and the factory that produced them being shut down, supposedly are still as amazing performance wise though

  • If all you want is cheap DE razor blades then buy them from Ali Express. I bought some FlyDear brand for about A$5 for 100 blades during a Choice sale and they're…okay. Not teflon coated but certainly sharp enough.

  • will try them out for my Merkur

  • +1

I have been using Wilkinson for the past few years. Slightly cheaper than this.

  • +2

There isn't much info around on these on the various forums so I wouldn't go with a 50 pack to begin with.

Go grab a sample pack of different blades and see what works best for you

  • +1

Anyone tried using these on their crown jewels? How'd it go?

    • Seriously ? Come on !

    • +2

Yep! Fine. Be careful, expect occasional nick, nothing bad though. Noobs down voting you.

  • Are these things actually safe?

    • No , they're bloody dangerous in the wrong hands … You've been warned 😵‍💫

    • +1

I think they are safer than the alternatives that were around when they were invented, which might have been one of those shaving knives/blades

      • +1

Safer than a shavette or straight razor for sure. Not safer than a cartridge razor.

        • Yeah, definitely safer option nowadays

  • Astra or Derby for me. I'd give these Viking blades a try if they came in smaller sample packs (5-10).

  • Blade agression just means how much of the blade edge is showing. Best to go for an adjustable razor like vintage gillette fat boy or the slim, or the black beauty. There are new options available too. And you can dial it in and change the settings when you try a different brand of blade. All blades are good when used with the correct settings for that blade.

  • Gents, any guidance/ recommendation here anyone could offer - looking to do the switch from Gillette Fusion 5 to a single blade. Beard type - full & thick. To do or not, how user friendly would the single blade option be vs the 5 blade alternative?

    • +1

Single blade isn’t as ‘user friendly’ as easier to nick yourself if not paying attention or go too fast or press too hard (there is a short learning period when you switch - using much less pressure is one important lesson). However single works better on thicker/longer hair and much cheaper (so much so that you don’t bother trying to get one or two more shaves from a blunt blade - just replace the blade so always using a sharp one).

I use single blade for 95% of the shave but still use my multi blade to tidy up a few spots I’ve learnt are problematic (ie high risk of nicks) and around nose and lips. Works out that I only need to replace the multi blade every 3 months or so.

And while you can use normal shaving cream/gel, if you pair it with a cheap shaving brush (no need for anything fancy) and tub of shaving cream (eg Prosaro- although I prefer Taylor’s of old bond street) then you will save a lot on this cost as well. A tub will last 5+ months

I will weigh in, but be advised I am a female and use my blades for shaving legs and underarms.

I used to use Gillette Fusion 5 (or similar) but was fed up with the ongoing cost. I bought a Leaf triple blade (you can use one, two, or three blades depending on how close you want the shave). I use it with three Astra blades and it is fantastic. I regret not buying one years ago.

I recommend these Shavers as they are reasonably priced - I have used several varieties for decades:
