Do they work with the regular chargers?

    • +2

      Yes.

They work with 18v tools too.

For 18v tools they are 9amp, for 54v tools they are 3amp batteries

    • Yes. All DeWalt chargers charge at 18v (for 18v batteries)
The 54v batteries is just 3x 18v batteries internally

      • Hang on a mo - so you don't need the horrendously expensive 54V charger (which never seem to come free with anything - even the kits which come with batteries) for them? You can just use the regular 18V chargers which come free with lots of things?

I have 2 of these died on me and refusing to charge despite being topped up before usage. It is a common problem. The batteries is so solidly packed that it is too hard a work to salvage the remaining batteries inside. I have stopped buying this type of battery and is moving to Makita.

Something going on with your charger or one of your tools then. I've been with DeWalt for years. Even found a battery dated 2018 in a roof once and it still works fine for me. Plenty of my flexvolt batteries get charged literally every working day and haven't died after 5 years of use.

      • +1

Same. I had these batteries for at lease 5 years and still going strong and I have about 6 of them

        • +1

I had my single 12ah also die after less than a year.
Have multiple 6ah which have lasted - ended up getting a 15ah (monster) as I have read it is slightly different construction to the 12ah and might be a bit more reliable. I am wondering if the tightly packed higher ah batteries have more issues.

Yellow top batteries have a 2 year warranty (from date of manufacture!!) compared to 12 months for the black top ones (6.0ah)

      • You'll probably find they moved production somewhere, I know this happened to Milwaukee about 4 years ago.

      • Try not to leave batteries in your radio too. This drains them to completely empty and stops them charging again if left for too long.

I have a 6Ah battery and it doesn't charge properly. The charger thinks it's full when it's clearly not. I have to keep unplugging and re-plugging it back in and it sort of randomly either stops again or charges for a while. I thought it was the charger at fault but might be the battery? Don't have another large one to compare, only a little 2Ah.

    • I just had a 12ah fail as well just after the 3 year mark only using at home. Also their outdoor gear has alot of poor reliability reviews that the likes of Makita doesn't have.

      Noting I have a 18v 4ah from 2014 that is still going….

      • I'm in both the Makita and DeWalt ecosystems. While I tend to prefer DeWalt tools, I’ve had three 6Ah FlexVolt batteries fail on me (all from Blackwoods). Fortunately, they were replaced under warranty. On the other hand, my Makita batteries, which are over 10 years old, are still going strong.
Makita's reliability impresses me, but I'm still uncertain about DeWalt's long-term dependability.

I hate all my Makita garden tools… especially the mower.

        • From everything I'm reading and being told from tool shops aligns with what your saying. I've got DeWalt for high power/high use gear (drills/blowers) and ozito pxc for low power (torch/work lights) and "once a year" tools. Maybe I'll hold off on garden tools for now. Mostly a want and not a need right now.

I think the (complex?) circuit design of these Flexvolt (18/54V) batteries opens them up to having more points of failure

    • Mine the same as in this deal, brand new, 2 cycles later it’s dead, took it back u der warranty and they said “oh another one going dead for no reason, something wrong with these 18/54v flex batteries”

So yeah @Black Hole its a thing.

      • +1

Yeah, mine were mint and rarely being used but kept well charged.
There is a fault in the design, no balance charging and with parasitic drainage involved the middle group of 3 batteries until they are dead. When I have taken them apart to check, it was almost zero volt. I could not rescue those 3 batteries with an external slow DC power supply.

  • This was the only dewalt battery ever to fail on me, ie wouldn't charge past 2 bars, but fortunately it was 2 weeks before warranty expired so replaced with fresh new battery. The battery was primarily used in a very battery hungry leaf blower so went through many cycles in those 3 years.

  • Picked one up, thanks!

  • Good deal - not much more than what I paid for my 2ah Powerstack.

A lot of reports of dead batteries for these though. Better put that receipt somewhere safe!

  • These will sell out very quickly

  • Got one. Now just need a 54V tool. I guess I can use with this worklight. 1 week of camping light sorted.

    • +1

54v flexvolt batteries work with any dewalt 18v tool. Hence the name "flex"-volt.

  • +1

Or 2 for $256 - which is an even better price if you need two batteries - although these are 2x 6Ah rather than 9Ah

    • +1

???? Thats why its cheaper mate

    • +3

I think you fail on basic math… how exactly are 2 x 6Ah better value or price? Just curious how you reason.

      • Some people might have multiple tools they want to run at once, so two batteries might be what they need. The lawn mowers use two batteries, so you might want to switch two at once. The 9.0 AH are also heavier, which can be a pain depending on the tool.

There's no hard in sharing the other product. It might just be more suitable for some.

    • +2

$21 per AH vs $16 per AH for the above battery. So the 2 x 6.0AH batteries are not a better deal. Which is why I didn't bother adding them in when I posted this deal..

Tried to price match with a TotalTools in Underwood and they said no - they'd be making a Loss.
