Camry Brake Light Bulb

I was quoted $50 to replace the brake light bulb of a Camry 2005.

I happened to check a Youtube video and it looks like it's p*ss easy to do it.

Are the bulbs pretty much the same in most vehicles and will this one do? https://www.bunnings.com.au/narva-stop-indicator-globe_p0047…

Solved. Thanks everyone for your help. Replacement bulb has arrived and I've installed it, using the bubble wrap bag to hold it. Very quick job.

As an aside, my car was also pinged for the horn not working and quoted nearly $300 just to do the diagnostic (there might be a problem with the airbag…). The cable was not attached (previously my wife had a battery problem and a Good Samaritan helped her jump start it and disconnected the horn cable). One minute to reconnect - I forgot to do it before.

I don't know whether it's not standard procedure to check if the cable is attached or they were trying to charge me some more for the pink slip service, which did take half an hour labour, not to mention the contribution to the depreciation of their hoist, etc..

    • also paying for their knowledge even if its supposedly easy - knowing which part, how to open the brake light etc.. for some people thats not easy

  • tbh if it wasn't a camry, on some cars the lights are a pain to change and most people may be better off paying someone to do it.

    For example:

BMW old halogen lights - clips are hard to get on and off, plus you risk damaging the globe by accidentally touch the globe with the oil from your fingers if the gloves get torn, if you wear gloves.

Rear lights - require unscrewing the entire light assembly - how much is 20mins of someones time?

    $10-20 light, $30 labour..

I suspect if it wasn't a Camry, they'd be quoting more for the service.

  • -1

Probably easier just to sell the car if a bulb goes out.

You won't get full market value though, so just be aware of that.

    • Usually I’d agree, but have you tried selling anything on FB marketplace lately? It’s nuts, or rather the people on it are. OP’s best bet might be a dealer trade in.

  • At least your mechanic inspected your car…

A couple of years ago I took my car in for a pink slip and the guy looked around the outside of it, didn't start the engine or get in it, then went into the workshop and came out 15 minutes later with a paper receipt with 'brake testing results' on it, and passed my car.

Easiest $38 the guy's ever made. Should've reported him.

    • I'm very appreciative of this and that's why I use this chain. Anything minor/easy for me to rectify, I do, otherwise I'm happy to pay for the effort they put in. They genuinely spent 1/2 hour and raised it on the hoist for a period to check.

  • Ref your later comment about horn not working on wife’s car.
If the person doing the pink slip test presses the horn & it doesn’t work, they’ll fail you.
They aren’t being paid to diagnose or fix the issue. That is why you pay a mechanic or, in your case , fix it yourself.

    • All good; they did a really proper job inspecting the car. All fixed and passed. I could have paid them ~$1k to do everything incl polishing headlights vs changing 2 new tyres and bulb for 1/4 the price.
