  • The front/objective lens on that is tiny. Have a look at the old equivalent 28mm f2.8 Ai lens and how much bigger the front lens is.

I wonder if the Z lens is the size it is just so people feel like they are getting value for money?

    • might want to have a look at the diagram of the lens, there is a lot going on there …. it has 9 lens elements inside…

    • Isn't it the quality of the output that matters?

Also, the smaller size is a pro - lighter.

    • oooo i'm actually trying to find a 28mm F2.8 AI-S for my FM2n on ebay haha, no luck.

but the 28mm Z annoys me cuz the mount is plastic. idk if there's a stingier camera/lens manufacturer today. Even Canon's nifty fifty come with metal mount?

that said, i won't be surprised if the 28mm could outperform the AI version in every single metric..

    • I have both the Ai-S 28 2.8 and the modern Z lens in front of me. The rear element of the Z lens is bigger and it needs to fit in the autofocus motor. The much older SLR lens is of a retrofocus design as it needs to accommodate a mirror in its back focus distance. Not an issue for the Z lens.

    • I have the Z50 and the kit lenses, 16-50 and 50-250. I also have an A7iii with the 24-70 2.8. Honestly the Z series lenses are amazing for the size, unless it's for professional work I find I can get 90% of the results I want with the smaller nikon footprint.

  • I have this lens and the image quality is quite disappointing. It is not very sharp and there is some fringing. You get better photos on a phone. Better to save up for one of the Nikkor S-lenses. Unless I really need the wider field of view, I try to make it work with my 50mm 1.8 instead.

    • I have this lens and the image quality is quite disappointing.

it's actually sharper (overall) than 17-28mm F2.8 @ 28mm @ F2.8, especially corner sharpness. just stop it down and use it as a doco lens i guess?

      Nikon doesn't make a better 28mm S version sadly
