Beginner Golf Set - What to Buy?

Looking for a beginner golf set - just getting into it. Had a look on FB Marketplace but completely overwhelmed with the range and don't want to be ripped off.

What brands should I look for? What models to target?
When I inspect them what should I look at?

TIA

Just get a number 1 iron and perfect the game. ( Much less work on the course lugging stuff around.)
Then when you get a full set you'll clean up and go pro. Or by then you'll be over the game of golf, and have saved the $$

Lee Trevino, a Mexican-American golfer, famously said, “If you're caught on a golf course during a storm and are afraid of lightning, hold up a 1-iron. Not even God can hit a 1-iron”.

      • You see my point?
I mean golf is a good walk wasted, anyway. And 'The Don' mastered the art of batting with a wicket so there's basic formula.

  • Don’t buy forged irons..yet
You’ll want clubs promoted as being forgiving
Don’t feel compelled to buy one complete set
Imo marketplace or a golf buy group the best place to look. If you see something google it to find more about it if it’s forgiving
You will want the club face to be in decent condition

  • Brand new set of Qi35s is what you need

Go with a decent brand name like TaylorMade, Callaway, Titleist, Ping, Srixon, Cleveland, Cobra, Nike or Wilson Staff.

Look for a set that is about 10 years old, or slightly older. Just Google the release date of the set to find out how old they are.

Get cavity back irons, not blades.

Don't worry about fairway woods. Just get a driver and maybe a hybrid or 5 wood.

Get a decent set of irons and wedges 3 or 4 iron down to sand wedge.

    Any old putter will do.

You might be better off buying your irons, driver and putter separately.

Something like this would be reasonable, especially if you could get it for $400 or less since they're a little old https://www.facebook.com/share/1A2ae9P4vB/

This is also a decent beginner set, but I wouldn't pay more than $500 for it. https://www.facebook.com/share/1A2UNDpRp5/

Also make sure to buy two pairs of pants in case you get a hole in one

i you wanna waste money, feel free to give me the money

  • Even if you're good at other sports, get beginners clubs. Beginners clubs are designed to be easier to hit (I said 'easier'…. not 'easy').

You need all the help you can get in this game, surely must be biggest mistake beginners make, convincing themselves they are more of a mid-level player and get more mid-level clubs, which are less forgiving.

Do what I did. Bought a $40 set and spent the rest on lessons.

  • My local op shop had several sets of golf clubs. Maybe do a bit of a wander and then Google what they have in stock.

  • If you're new to golf, buy a semi recent second hand set. Don't buy new for 2 reasons:

    1. If you're new to the game, there is a non-zero chance you will lose interest so investing any serious amount of money is a risk
    2. You don't know what clubs will suit your swing best. Your swing speed (Among other things) will determine what stiffness of shaft you need and the forgiveness level you need as well.

Once you play a few rounds and ideally have some lessons, you'll be in a better spot to work out what you actually need.

Honestly, if you're looking to going for a few rounds to see if its for you, borrow your friends clubs or just hire some at the proshop. They should be good enough for now.

But as other have said, it really comes down to how much youre willing to spend.

  • I bought these and cant fault them!

Absolutely worth it if a deal like this comes up again.
