Why Does eBay Allow Fake Computer Accesories to Be Sold?

That's Logotech 502XXX
Haha, that's a new low for eBay. That's not even a knock-off G502X.
All the warning signs are there for that product. Might be worth complaining to Logitech about the performance of their product and linking to the listing.
"Top Rated Seller
Usama Hameed is one of eBay's most reputable sellers. Consistently delivers outstanding customer service Learn more"
Exactly
And how does eBay determine its fake?
And if its priced accordingly, whats the issue?
It's not just fake computing accessories. Counterfeit goods of all kinds have been sold on eBay since day one and will continue to circulate through various shady vendors likely forever. You really have to do your own due diligence when buying from any seller that isn't a huge corporation's eBay store, any seller that's based in China/HK or other known sources of counterfeit crap or whenever the pricing is too good to be true. Certain categories of products are more commonly counterfeited too, e.g. memory cards, watches, etc.
eBay has never really cracked down on this problem and likely never will and the sellers that peddle counterfeit garbage almost always have 99.99999% ratings.
ebay is the wild west. It's where dodgy goes to play. ebay allows anything that allows the status quo to continue. Fraudulent claims are common and tolerated. Otherwise the BS exaggerations like "how many watts" etc would be banned. And everyone knows ebay allows sellers to lie about where an item is located at purchase.
What you should be asking is why a giant sales website with an "au" on the end can continue to flout the laws, and thumb its nose at the weak, ineffectual and insipid ACCC. This org is a white elephant burden on taxpayers, on the big issues. Issues like ebay, fuel price gouging etc. Would not surprise me if they were HN shareholders as well,LOL.
It would be impossible for a marketplace to verify everything on their platform.
Marketplaces are a case of buyer beware - check feedback, if it's too good to be true, etc. I have purchased from eBay, Amazon, AliExpress, etc for years with no issues with counterfeits(unless intentionally). Even with purchases with low risk, you need to make a best effort to confirm what you're receiving is genuine.
You can expand the scope of the thread a fair bit - Why do
es eBaymarketplaces allow:- fake SSDs
- fake watches
- fake shoes
- products that don't meet local regulations
- used underwear
- anything and everything
where else am I going to buy used underwear from? Not paying full price when most people only wear them 1 of the 4 ways for the so called 'used' ones.
on fake shoes, that is really comical if you've seen ebay ad's about them hiring sneaker experts to sniff out the fakes and basically saying they only sell legit ones there.
Interesting! They do have a Authenticity guarantee program which does appear to be free for now -
It's easy! Browse and shop eBay listings with the "Authenticity Guarantee" badge. When you buy an eligible item, the seller posts it directly to a team of qualified, professional Authenticators. The Authenticators thoroughly inspect and verify your item's authenticity, and confirm the item and accessories are consistent with the listing title, description and images before sending it on to you with tracked express delivery.
Plenty of other shoes not covered by the program though.
Yep thats the one, thanks for pointing that out.
Remember to add the replica Canon cameras and lens' that were empty shells
"It would be impossible for a marketplace to verify everything on their platform"
yeah nah
People report with clear evidence fake fraudulent, you name it, and nothing changes. It's not about them looking. They must ignore the evidence when shown.
I've seen clearly direct theft of designs (automotive parts) too. That's a breach of copyright. At what point do they hold themselves accountable when faced with evidence? Ditto for the ACCC when presented with breaches in consumer law. ebay trades under.au and should be subject to ACL.ebay trades under.au and should be subject to ACL.
Under current guidelines, it's still the seller's responsibility(if based in Australia):
When consumers buy products through a marketplace online auction business:
- it’s up to the seller of the product or service, not the owner of the platform, to resolve most problems
- if the seller is a private individual and not running a business, some consumer guarantees do not apply.
It's not too hard for a dodgy vendor to set up a fake store to pedal trash products. Buying through eBay provides a safer, more risk-free experience.
I largely agree that where it is obvious that there is an issue marketplaces should do more. In this particular case, it is quite obvious what is being sold is not a g502x should be removed.
All that said, I like having access to all the available items and would prefer things the way they are over losing access to much of what is available.
IMO, eBay do need to do a few things to improve the usability of its platform such as making it clear when things are coming from overseas and massively improving searching, adding the ability to better filter items/sellers.All they and the ACCC have to do is act on reports and weed out the already identified crooks.
To create a deterrent you need to lift a finger. At least once.
Seriously? If you are allowing fraud to be conducted on your platform and are actively profiting from it, you are complicit in that illegal activity.
Short answer: $
Long answer: $$$$$$$$Lol. You must be new to fleeceBay.
That’s a bloody outrage it is
Hey! Mr Prime Minister! Andy!!
Take advantage of it. Buy it then claim counterfeit. Get a refund and keep the item, too easy.
There are some hoops to jump through but yes you get a refund and to keep the item.
Here's the 1st level alarm bells

Love the Logitech LED G logo !
I understand that eBay Australia has no control on listings that emanate in China. eBay China lives on fake products, take them away and they would have nothing to list.
For their part, eBay Australia will not act on reports of counterfeit items unless the complaint is lodge by the copyright/patent holder.
Why would they police their own bent business model with any real intent?
Purely because the police can prosecute them for selling counterfeit goods. And/or the legal copyright/patent holder could also sue them for knowingly facilitating the sale of counterfeit goods.
One example. There were and are counterfeit knockoffs of Mann Hummel catch cans all over ebay. They even use part of the name of the original as a selling point. Clearly a copyright breach. If any of them were ever prosecuted it would be common knowledge by now and the listings shut down. Nada.
@Protractor: I can go from personal experience - can you??
We are the sole importer to Australia for an item which we list on eBay (and other sites), and for which there is always Chinese counterfeits appearing on eBay Australia. With the authority of the patent holder we contact eBay and threaten legal and they quickly buckle. Only to have new listings appear from a different (?) seller.
Nada Nada !!!!@Ocker: Search Provent 200 on ebay. Note the identical design between genuine and fake.
@Protractor: How other parties want to pursue counterfeit lsitings is totally up to them. I merely cited how we handle the situation.
@Ocker: With a tasty bit of you know I don't icing.
My point is ebay would also know.
Cheers.
Ebay logic:
Fake logitech products are allowed because reasons.
All legitimate Puma items not sold by Puma are fake. All of them. No exceptions. We will take anything down without even looking at the pictures.
Isn't this just the natural extension of the insanity we've accepted in relationship to "facts and rights"… Ie. 'How dare anybody tell me I can't buy this fake product!' Or, 'limiting my ability to sell forgeries is censorship!'…
Seriously in a word world where people think they are entitled to their 'opinion', in the face of objective fact and reason, where companies are pilloried for trying to uphold standards, WTF would they invest in worrying about forgeries. I mean if it's the sellers opinion that it is real who are we to argue?
I think this is just the extension of our stupidity…. Yay!
Is ebay even worth it anymore?
I feel that there isn't the big discounts that you used to get. Remember buying grey market Nokia's from Hong Kong many years ago and getting big discounts.
How do you know its fake? Post the link.
