AmEx Essentials Rewards Card via Referral: 60,000 Bonus Membership Rewards Points ($3,000 Min Spend in 3 Months), $9 Monthly Fee

190

This deal is only available via referral which you can access here or in the referral section below.

I've had many AMEX cards before and I find this one to be the simplest and least hassle card.

Using the Velocity return flight, $450 Qantas Travel Credit or the Explorer $00 travel credit I always found to not be the most cost effective for my planning. The Screen protector insurance is great plus the bonus categories have the potential to work better for you than maybe even the explorer.

Earn up to 5 points on your first 10,000 points per month, and then continue earning 1 point per $1 spent after that4
5 points per $1 spent on eligible eats & drinks purchases in Australia including Guzman Y Gomez, McDonald’s, Starbucks, Boost Juice and more.4
3 points per $1 spent on selected streaming subscriptions in Australia4 including Spotify, Netflix, Disney+, Binge, Kayo Sports, Stan, and Amazon Prime.
2 points per $1 spent at selected major retailers in Australia4 including The Iconic, JB Hi-Fi, Kmart, Bunnings, Uniqlo, Amazon, Myer and Harvey Norman.
1 point per $1 spent on everything else4

  • Up to $500 with the complimentary Phone Screen Protector Insurance

Great little card IMO with a decent sign up bonus for casual card users.

Now fees are per month :)

    Oh, boy…

    • Latitude was like that,

Celebratory gas light email making your life easier ending the burdomsome $99 annual fee
with a more considerate affordable monthly $7.95

less than 18 months later it went to $8.95 $9.95 and is now $10.95 per month

      • Interesting I'm only paying $8 per month

  • banks trying to squeeze as much as they can from the consumer…. IIRC the essential card was previously fee free.

    • The min spend threshold seems to be increasing too… 😢

Interesting. Suppose you spend $3000 in 2 months and lets say it takes another month to receive your bonus points, does that mean you end up spending just $27 in fees?

That could be much better for big spender/churners compared to spending the full annual amount for fees.

      Churbers won't get approved.

    • Very hard for churners to be approved. I applied for this card last week, haven't held an AMEX since 2021, but have churned 9 cards in the last couple of years and was declined instantly. No consideration of financial situation, no documents submitted.

Just noticed there is $97.5 cashrewards cashback also, does that mean you can potentially be in profit?

    • They would have to recognise the referral and the Cashrewards in the same transaction.

I would have assumed it’s for annual fees only, or a minimum of 12 months paid monthly. Looking at the Cashrewards terms, it doesn't say otherwise.

    • Quite strangely, I was rejected for this card, yet the Cashback was approved and instantly available for withdrawal - albeit $32.50 instead of $97.50?

Is Amex continuing to reject churners?

    • +1

Nothing official, but it seems to be the case if there is a clear pattern.

      • Seems they’re using Ai to weed out all the non-profitable customers.

Because its an abuse of the credit reporting system.

Nothing to do with credit worthiness - all to do with assessing loyalty.

        • A high churn rate could indicate that someone has a debt that they're using balance transfer offers to move around and avoid paying off. That would reflect a credit worthiness issue.

    No travel insurance isnt ideal

Is the $9/month fee only for new AMEX Essentials Credit Cards?
My current AMEX Essentials Credit Card has always had no monthly or annual fees.

      Same but different rewards.

    • would like to know this as well

No changes to your existing Essential card. This is effectively a new product, Essential Rewards, and the old product, Essential, is no longer offered to new customers. But if you already have it, you can keep it.

Amex is going down the toilet here imo. Had one for a while and at the beginning it was awesome, especially with the good old afterpay loophole(anywhere that charges extra or doesn't accept amex will have a better chance accepting afterpay, you could then pay the afterpay charges with amex - afterpay no longer takes amex). Nowadays it seems the only places I can use it are the odd cafe and Coles, now we moved and Aldi is our closest shop its not even worth it for that.

Their customer service is still top notch so full credit for that, but I found the benefits to be ever decreasing, higher spend thresholds to be eligible and less kick backs for the privilege, all of these little decreases in capacity with the glaring big problem of having to ask "do you take amex" every time you go to tap just put it in the too hard basket for me.

  • platinum vs platinum business, does one loose out on any perks that the other would have?
