Buying from Overseas GST $1000 Threshold - Will It Ever Increase?

$1000 gets you much less than you did 10 years ago. Major retailers (eBay, AliExpress, etc.) that ship to Australia have had to implement collecting GST on low value goods. However, lot's of overseas retailers do not, and buying over $1000 frequently gets expensive (as it's 5% duty + 10% gst + broker fees).

Will the government ever increase the $1000 threshold for buying international goods for personal use?

The $1000 is not about giving you a little bonus, but about the threshold below which it isn’t worth chasing for GST.
It likely will never change, or possibly go down if systems improve to make collecting lower value goods worthwhile.

Cheer up, in the UK and Canada, and lots of Europe they collect down to about $50.

Not while Gerry breathes…. (that is in no way to be construed as a suggestion for any action).

    • Good one Pete.

Not in in their interest to raise it, means they are missing out on more 'taxes' I mean fees, no I mean both.

no. Gov Co needs every $$ they can get to spend millions to refurbish their offices every 2years

    • PFFT … yet not the case !!!

funding of ADF troops == one of benefactors to YOUR GST money.
will let you research the rest.

  • It’s probably my first time in ordering something from eBay that I can remember that has gst added.

I purchased an item from a seller on eBay Europe and the price of item with shipping takes it just over $1000 so am i right this is the tax that is collected for Australia?
So when it arrives in the country there is no fees to pay?

I know we still currently can purchase up to $1000 and get no gst charge as long as it is not over that from sellers and small businesses etc.
But the likes of Amazon who add these gst costs on and ebay who do same is this me paying all taxes up front I assume it is so when it hits Australia there is no further fees right?

Obviously it’s good we can still order items from smaller businesses etc and get up to that amount gst free but it’s annoying it’s not the case for bigger retailers online.
I was just curious that what I pay now is all I be paying, to be honest I have never went over a $1000 on eBay from overseas well not since this gst thing started on eBay etc but regardless they hit you with gst no matter what the cost is ok item.
I just need to know that’s all fees I be paying?

    • So you bought an item in eBay in Europe and they added GST in the checkout right? GST will be added to an order that has item value (exclude shipping cost) less than AUD $1000. If this is the case you won't be getting duty, government charges and broker fees.
