Anyone else seen the videos of air india with absolutely gross quality seats and facilities?

    • +11

I saw a recent airline business class comparison review for Air India that was not very complimentary: dirty seats, outdated and broken tech etc

      • +40

Air India uses the 787-8s on Australian routes and they are the ABSOLUTE WORST, was cancelled on Sri Lankan to Colombo and was rebooked on AI and id rather go Jetstar Economy.
        A) Toilets were never cleaned
        B) Catering was appalling
        C) My seat was broken - could recline a bit until it just stopped, same as half of the seats in Business Class
        D) Staff were horrific, rude, arrogant and never showed their faces outside of meal service and were simply on their phones
        E) Transit in BOM was bad, but irrelevant for this deal

@Time has come: That youtube video is wild. Guess air india represents their countries standards very well.

            • @SuperMid: Upvote for truth.
              All of it, just gross.

          • @Time has come: Whoa, DEL is looking a whole lot better and cleaner than last time I was there (over 10 years ago).

        • +5

I've never encountered a more neglected 787 product than Air India, they literally leave 60% of Business cabin empty because the seats are all broken. The staff scramble around to try and fix things in the air, it is actually a complete shambles and I've banned them until they bring the A350 into the Australia market

        • Yeah, wow!

        • +1

I had a similar experience last year. I'd much rather fly Scoot via Singapore than ever fly Air India again.

        • +1

          Staff were horrific, rude, arrogant

But at least they do it with a smile

      • +1

Although I would take Singapore Air, Cathay and even Qantas business class over Air India any day of the week, what I did like about Air India business class was that the bed was long and did not narrow at the feet which for me made it more comfortable to sleep.

    • I like my seats, yellow, assphat, Jell-O

    • Link please?

    • +2

I've seen the videos of India..

      • And what's your take?

    • +3

I mean it's only right to give you a preview of what to expect when you land right?

    • +1

It is a very smelly flight and seat quality is poor.

  • +3

Better to avoid Delhi options, as their airport tend to redirect the flights or delay worst case scenario Close down due to visibility.

    • +2

Delhi usually has no fog after 26 January, but zero visibility isn't a problem for long haul flights who can do cat 3c landing using ILS.

      • +2

It is a problem if your connecting domestic flight can't take off/land. Had to endure cancellations due to low visibility on my previous two trips, never flying into Delhi again.

Being scammed a few times in New Dehli, even on transfer. Be careful guys.

    • +3

Oh shit! Could you briefly describe your scam experience on transfer? I’m transiting through New Delhi later this month

      • +2

Don’t sit in the airport buggy or let the airport staff escort you to your flight as they are not free and will charge money in the end.
Follow the signs and use self serve portals for directions and navigate, you should be good.

        • +2

If they wear a maroon coloured shirt and wear a tag around their neck I believe they're porters, and they charge for their service. It's not really a scam, but just that you didn't know.

      • I'll tell you what happened to us:

We were wanting to explore the city and a very friendly man offered to drive us to see sights for free (some people might think this is obviously a scam but we were young and nieve) he started driving us and ended up at a shop. He told us to look inside so we had a look. He then started talking to the store owner.

Anyway long story short is locals will pick up tourists and take them to businesses and get the owners to pay them for bringing in tourists.

To people complaining about India being dirty, the airline being dirty, of getting scammed… C'mon, man, it's India! Where's your sense of adventure?! 😁

    • +7

Adventure is fun, but their is lack of respect (IMO)

You can't operate an international flight with such awful services.

      • Have you tried their trains? In 3rd class?? Now, that is an adventure ;D

  • +3

Pretty bad reviews om product reviews by customers, everyone is complaining about service, staff, food, cleanliness and broken entertainmemt services.

    https://www.productreview.com.au/listings/air-india

    • Have a look on TikTok or instagram reels- there are some truly appalling reviews there. I feel sorry for the people who don't research… they're in for a shock.

    • most airlines struggle to breakn 2 stars on product reviews… SG gets 2.3!!

Yeah wow, seems from the names even the Indians are not rating it. One noted "Excellence in poor service". lol

      • -3

Yes because non Indians never use Indian names when doing fake reviews, innit.

        • True, I am actually a skinny rice.

        • What makes you think they're all fake as opposed to them being a genuinely bad airline?

BTW what was your multi trip Air India experience ?

            • @Protractor: Really? They've been sporadically giving AirIndia bad reviews on ProductReview for the past 10 years? Because the vast majority of them from the past decade are 1 or 2 star. Maybe AirIndia just isn't very good. As for me personally, I've never used them and I've never left a review for them.

    • Golly gosh these are some worst reviews

  • +5

Even if they offer for $300 - I won't take the flight.

Absolute poor service, seats, food, timing - I hope they stop offering flight services.

Spots like Goa, Andamans, Bangalore, Kerala, Himachal Pradesh, Ladakh, Sikkim/Northeast

      • -1

who the (profanity) goes to Bangalore? it's a nightmare city

also Goa tourism is the worst it has been in years, even locals are skipping it

        • -1

Out of the major Indian cities, Bangalore seems to have better weather, greenery, a nice airport, decent rail transportation, and food.

AFAIK tourism to Goa bottomed out in 2020 and has begun rising, though hasn't recovered to pre-COVID levels but it's something. The taxi scammers seem to be a big problem however, people should rightfully be wary of them

          • @Kirkitplayer3: haha it shows that you've never been there if you think all things about Bangalore are true

            • -1

@deathjr: Compared to the other major cities in India, for sure Bangalore seems to be better. Compare their year round climate with Delhi, Mumbai. If we smaller cities, Chandigarh, Indore, Pune

    • +3

I travelled there with my wife last year in April for tourism and had an amazing time. There are some fantastic sites and building to be seen (Agra Fort was our favourite and eclipses the Taj), spiritual cities with amazing public ceremonies (e.g. Rishikesh), and the best food we've ever eaten. There are also some amazing and humble people there and many great conversations to be had.

Compared to other overseas places I've been to though (Europe, USA, NZ, Japan), it is undoubtedly the 'hardest' place to travel. There are a lot of cons to going there including scammers, touts, disgusting smells, long bus rides to travel between cities, risk of food poisoning, the need for hyper awareness of your surrounding at all times. If you are white you will also get the celebrity treatment which is not a good thing - people will shove their phones in your face to take non-consensual selfies.

In saying all that, we're considering going back as soon as a cheap flight deal were to pop up with dates that suit us (keep in mind that we visited Japan after India and still want to go back). I'm not saying that I recommend this to everyone though, and would pretty much guarantee that a majority of Australians would have an overall bad time if they visited.

I'm happy to answer any questions you might have about specifics.

Edit: oh we also flew with Air India and it was okay but not terrible. Both of our in-flight screens weren't working which didn't bother us as we've flown with no entertainment before (e.g., Scoot). We found the food to be fine and the air hosts to be fine to deal with. The biggest shock was the people which made sense once we got to India. So many people were out of their seat during the flight (20-30 at once) and standing in the emergency exits, walking down the aisles and talking the entire time. I'm not sure if this is a result of it being mostly Indians on the plane, or it being an Indian airline which allows that to happen as it's clearly a cultural thing. I somehow doubt that another airline would allow that to happen though regardless of the demographic of the passengers.

    • For the culture.

After seeing those street food videos floating around.

    NO THANKS

    • Don't eat street food. Even middle class Indians will tell you that.
