Casio G-Shock GMW-B5000D-1 Full Metal Square $566.10 Delivered @ Shiels

500

Full metal G-Shock square for the G-Shock fan boys. Shiel's web site says -1D and "35th Anniversary Limited Edition" which I'm pretty sure is incorrect, there was no such watch like this, I believe this is the plain D-1 variant in continuous production. They did have a 35th anniversary limited edition Porter release which I think is the best looking full metal square ever made.

10% sitewide discount at Shiels, applied at checkout. Click and collect also available at some stores.

Leave some for the rest of us!

  • i like the land tortoise but it does look like it wears large

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LPLwUAR6kZE

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EqtoNvG_Gw8

its 'only' 42mm so i wonder how large a full 44mm capt. willard looks

    • Only need to adjust the link. The watch is not that big for men in my opinion. My height is 172 cm. I have a Citizen solar powered watch 43.5 mm and it's good size for me, just need to adjust the link. Even I have 46 mm smartwatch and it's still good size for me.

I have got the tool to adjust the link that came with other watches. It's easy and simple after you know how and got the experience to adjust the link. Or just ask someone from a watch shop to adjust the link.

They wear beautifully on a 7" wrist. Jody of JOMW has a seven-incher, and he shows it in every video lol.

      The Steeldive SD1970 (44mm) has a reasonable lug-to-lug of 48mm.
Link shows how it looks on Jody.

He also says 44.7mm L2L for the tortoise.

    • Agree the land tortoise and Willards wear great (SD1970 much the same)!

  • Not an ATL but that's the best price for any GMW-B5000/steel G-Shock square model in a long time.

It's a diving watch. Was wondering why it was so expensive for an LCD watch.

    • Not a bad price at all. 200m WR like any other G-Shock.
The full metals are very nice, a bit too expensive and you'd be worried about banging it up (but fine if that doesn't matter).

I dunno. This seems like a very 'niche' market item. I mean,

        a) how many people actually dive to 200 m depth?
        b) and of those, (who haven't yet got the bends) at those dark, gloomy depths, how many need to look at a dark, gloomy watch?
        c) and of those, how many want to be reminded of butt-ugly 1970's brutalist design?

I figure this must be a vanishing small market.

Thus, my conclusion is that this is purely a fashion/status statement. Fine. But I reckon a $29.95 Casio would do equally as well to display one's poor taste.

        • @Roman Sandstorm

The point was he calling the full metal square a diving watch, unless I'm missing something. Almost all G-Shocks are 200m. Have a look at Casios infographic they say it's fine for snorkelling (and unofficially diving).

          https://www.casio-intl.com/asia/en/wat/water_resistance/

Unless you free are talking about another watch..
Who needs anything in life, each to their own.

        • +1

Its not designed for diving to 200m. In fact, its only for surface water activities.
The 200m rating is a laboratory rating to some standard.

            @bigticket: @G-rig, @bigticket

You're actually enhancing my snarky comments.

The fact that this very expensive, ugly 'divers' watch (and not 'divers' as in… diverse… LOL) doesn't actually go to 200m (which I assume to be a primary selling point) further emphasises that it is more of a marketing/cosmetic/fashion item.

And, that's fine. People buy Gucci handbags, Italian supercars, Armani suits… all for fashion/status purposes.

But to me, this watch is kind of like proudly parking a Lada at Coles carpark, and expecting people to be wowed, and crowd around you and take selfies.

            • @Roman Sandstorm: Oh right did you google it?

"Divers" and "diver's" both refer to a watch designed for underwater diving. "Diver's" is used to describe a watch that meets the ISO 6425 standard for diving.

Also you never said which watch you are talking about? No one (except you) is calling a square G-shock a diver's watch 🙄.

Maybe just shuffle along if you aren't even interested [smfh].

              • @G-rig: @G-rig

I've obviously mis-read the room here.

My smart-arse comments were merely usual 'OzBargain-style' snarks and attempts at humour (clearly failed) directed at people who will pay lots of $$$ for such awful retro-styled objects.

I absolutely bow to your (and other's) technical knowledge and clear admiration for these watches. And admit that my own distaste for said watches is probably not representative - especially amongst the afficionados attracted herein.

… with my tail now firmly planted between my legs, I will slink back off to obscurity.

                • @Roman Sandstorm: Doesn't worry me, everyone is free to have an opinion, and there are many.

I agree that it's not for everyone, I haven't spent that much on a G-Shock either. People can spend money on what they want. It's funny you don't get the same uproar when nerds spend $1500-2k on a graphics card to play games.

You're right though, it's a toxic, argumentative environment so I'll probably delete all the posts eventually anyway.

  • Awesome price for an awesome watch. I wear mine nearly daily. And paid a bit more than that.

  • +1

    bought 1, thanks!

    $570 What metal?

  • If this model had a vibration alarm it would be the last watch I even own. I have the DW-H5600 but the additional smart watch features feel really unnecessary. Also it wears very tall on the wrist thanks to the heart rate sensor.

    • Yeah I got the GBD200 and turn off Bluetooth and all that crap off. Being non solar it extends the battery a lot. Smart watches isn't Casio's forte, the paw print bit chunky too. I Only got it for the MIPS display and it's kind of square.

      • +1

Same, GBD200 in "airplane mode" as an easy to read normal watch.

  • Oh yeah, sweet watch

Who on earth is paying $1,199 for this?

    • +1

No one. Who pays retail for anything (except apple customers).

      • +1

        And Tesla owners.

      • Agreed. I prefer to pay scalper prices!

    • MR-G has entered the chat

      • Yeah, I noticed the price on that as well last night. Next level piss take. It looks identical to this.

        • I got the DW5000R-1D recently, wasn't going to then sold out immediately, then got offered one from a mate so worked out well. Almost double the (deal) price of the M5610U but is the newest accurate remake of the 1983 model (with steel case, screw down case back etc and more legible screen), bit of FOMO but good anniversary and collectors edition without spending any more than that.

          • @G-rig: Nice score. Where did your mate source the dw5000r?

            I've got gw5000 and gwm5610 already, I think it'd be nice inbetween

            • @Fullhalter: Casio AU, bought two didn't want one so worked out well.

  • i love this watch so much but cant afford it, now im wearing the poor man version of it alongside my ozbargain badge proudly.
