Seeking Thoughts on TCL QM6K

I am currently on the market for a TV - first time for over 10 years, I am not a TV expert.

From my Googling and OzB research it would seem that based on my target price range I am most likely going to be getting a TCL C855.

However, I noticed that TCL just announced their new QM6K lineup and can't figure out whether that's comparable and something I should consider, or if it's in an entirely different category of performance.

I believe it will likely be much cheaper and has much fewer dimming zones than the C855, but aside from that I couldn't really see much other differences. Are dimming zones that important and is this the only material differentiator between the two products?

Any thoughts from people who know their TVs would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Cheers.

EDIT: Not sure if relevant but I should add that I'm looking at a 75" TV size

  • Idk but with the size tvs are getting these days more pixels is probably better as long as the upscaling is good.

    • Thanks. I just added that I'm looking at a 75" TV size.

Does more dimming zones mean more pixels?

No, it doesn’t. I didn’t do my research and just assumed the 6K in the model number referred to the pixels. But it doesn’t. It’s a 4k tv. More dimming zones is better though. The more contrast a tv can produce and the more finely it is able to control backlighting the better. That is why OLED is king with self lit pixels and infinite contrast ratio. If you’re buying one tv every 10 years stretch your budget to an LG OLED and enjoy. It really is chalk and cheese.

        • I also have a 83" LG OLED and appreciate it but not everyone does, some could be perfectly happy with a cheaper but same size TV at 1/4 of the price.

  • I'm in the same situation as you. I have my eye on the TCL 855, but wanting to compare it to the QM6K/QM7K and the new frame pro tv from Samsung.

Yes it has less dimming zones than the 855 but it's supposed to have better light/halo control and better brightness due to its new chip. People who saw it at CES are saying it was comparable to OLED despite it being one of their budget TVs. It also has a matte screen (some don't like matte) if you're in a bright room, but the QM7K has a glossy screen and is brighter (but more exxy).

Unfortunately we just won't know until they are compared side by side. We should start to see them soon on YouTube as they're already available to order in US.

For me it will come to price - whichever is cheaper for the performance, I'll purchase. The 855 models are going to come down significantly this year, I think they'll be hard to beat.

    • thanks for the feedback. i'm also keeping an eye out for comparison reviews.

if the QMXK is supposedly closer in performance to OLED than the 855, then there's not going to be any reason to buy the 855 unless it drops a lot in price.
