How Much Negotiation Can Be Done on a Mazda CX-3?

Moved to Forum: Original Link

I am looking to buy base (sport) model of this car which is $29,990 drive away. If the car dealer asks me how much I am willing to pay what will be the reasonable price I can offer them to start negotiation? I know it depends on various factors but I just want to get an idea. Thank you.

Is that their RRP? Their margins aren't actually super high at new car dealerships. From memory if you can get them to throw in 1-2 accessories you want and lower it say $500 I'd say you've done well, if this is the car you want and need. Otherwise best bargain you can get is not buying something you don't need. Haha!

I'll start with 10% off rrp, but this all depends on the dealer and the type of car you are after.

Basically zero discounts on a drive away price, even less discounts if you're buying the base model.

you might get free flour mats and maybe 1/2 a tank of fuel if you're lucky.

  • Base model you can't expect too much movement.

If that's the full RRP then you could probably get 1-2k knocked off but you'd get better results getting accessories thrown in or tinting. FYI the "free car mats" is pretty much a standard thing, if you walk out with a new car without them then you're doing it wrong. Same goes for tinting.

Your best bet to save money is to get one that is last years build, a demo, or part of a runout offer (eg: a colourway that isn't popular).

I managed to snag a top spec 3 for $12k off full RRP a few months ago plus accessories etc.

Also just consider that the CX3 is literally just the 2 series, it's really small. Give it a test drive compared to the 3 or CX30 even..

  • If the car dealer asks me how much I am willing to pay

    they wont.

  • Thank you everyone.

  • Assuming negotiation is possible, I'd decide on what price you're prepared to pay and start from there.

Eg "I've got $25,000 to spend, what can I get for that? Can I get "that car" for that"? "I like this car, I have $25,000, what can you do for me"?

Car salesman will never ask you what price you want to pay. Their assumption is that you'll pay whatever the advertised price is. You will need to start negotiations.

I doubt there is much room for movement in base models, especially if this year's model. I suspect you would find more wriggle room with earlier year, discontinued model or the dealer demo ones.

Can't remember why this worked this way, but a few years ago, we bought a couple of Mitsubishi lancers for $15,000 direct from dealer. One had 100klm on it, the other 15,000. Even though they were both sold as used, however they were categorised, they were considered as new for insurance purposes.

From memory, they were discounted so much because they were a discontinued model. Had to ask for them specifically, the ones on display in the car yard were 5 or 6k more.

Did get free car mats. Had to pay for our own tinting, seat covers etc though.

Bonus was, when insuring, RACQ said they were valued at $24k each so kind of made money on those transactions as opposed to the usual instant depreciation.

    • Thank you very much

  • Best thing when buying a new car is look for relevant internet forums, Facebook groups, etc, find out what other people have paid for the same car recently.

I bought a new car last year, did my research this way, most people ordering the same car in the same spec had been able to haggle about 5% off the RRP. With that in mind, knowing that the car had been sold to those people for $X, I went in knowing that price was possible and therefore being unwilling to pay more than that. It went pretty smoothly because I wasn't demanding anything outlandish like 10% off when nobody else had got anywhere near that so the dealer didn't feel like I was trying to screw him, and i knew the price I got was in line with what other people had paid so I didn't feel like the dealer was screwing me.
