This is the 3rd lowest price, according to Camel³. It briefly hit US$50 in Oct'22, but never again. Since then, it has oscillated between U$70 and US$100, sometimes hitting U$120 and U$130. It hit US$60 over Christmas and in early December, but now it offers a coupon discount instead.

It's Amazon's Choice budget portable projector, and this guy's too. It doesn't have much of the electronics others do at this price level — wifi, autofocus, digital keystone, etc — so it seems what it lacks in electronics, it makes up in optics. As I'm planning to connect the projector to a Fire TV stick I already have, I don't much care for the projector having android CPU inside (which is usually substandard). I'm no gamer, but the absence of electronic middlemen substantially reduces the lag, I hear (to 20 ms).

For anyone interested, this probably will be the best cheap projector you can get for that price.

Here's a good comparison review of cheap projectors. The Haprun comes out as best overall.

    • Appreciate this

That's the video review I linked in the description, but thanks for confirming it 😊

    • Couldn’t find the top 3 projectors in the video on Amazon Australia. But happy to be corrected

      • Yeah, I looked for that ONOAYO and Groview ones everywhere, not only in Australia, to no avail.

        • +1

Same. I ordered the Groview recently and had to source it through a US Amazon account.

    • Gotta be a legit link…
All i saw was the last 2 letters

    • +1

Crazy, didn't realise projectors even came this cheap

      • Maybe it's bc these projectors are basically a phone screen with led lights shining through, with lens and ports attached.

      • These aren't comparable to "real" projectors - the difference in picture quality is massive between one of these and a basic Epson or Benq. Hence the massive price differences 😁

        • Nah, it's just branding and western overhead (expensive offices, management, marketers, etc). The technology is the same.

There are top level projectors from China too; Formovie has the best laser ultra short flow projector, form instance.

          • @wisdomtooth:

            Nah,

What do you mean "Nah" ?

These "basically a phone screen with led lights shining through" are objectively not comparable to real projectors. There's good reasons that they only cost a tenth of the normal price.

it's just branding and western overhead (expensive offices, management, marketers, etc).

What ? You think the reason Formovie charge three grand for their UST projector is because they have "branding and western overhead" costs ?

            The technology is the same.

A modern DLP projector is absolutely not the same technology.

There are top level projectors from China too

Yes, and they cost 10x the price of these budget units, even though they're from China, and they don't use mobile phone screens.

What a strange post, if you want to convince yourself that a thousand dollars of projector is available for a hundred bucks, then go right ahead - but you're just wasting everyone's time by trying to make that come true.

  • +6

Had this exact projector, stopped working after 3 months. Got a refund via amazon.

    • which on the other hand wasn't a bad thing… free projector for 3 month for just a bit of hassle to return it..

  • +3

I own this projector. It's very light and probably best projector for the price. But it's good for dark rooms only.

Even little bit of daylight will washout all the colors. It came with a screen sheet but I have never used that. I use wall for projection.

    • +1

I've considered this unit too but unsure of the fan noise. Is it very noticeable?

      • +3

        42.4 dB

The HY320 is 51.6 dB, one of the reasons I scrapped it.

      • I have a different projector which was measured at 6 dB louder than the Happrun. 6 dB difference is on the order of 4x sound pressure (but not 4x perceived noise, probably closer to 2x). I find its fan noise annoying, to the point that I would rather use headphones than a soundbar. But this is not my main A/V setup; the Groview projector works just fine as a cheap, fast solution to 'how can I watch shows while exercising without trying to clip my phone to a machine that's constantly being jostled'.

The answer to "Is it very noticeable?" will depend a lot on your specific environment and the purpose of your viewing. If this is for the occasional outdoor movie night, or just putting on some content to have in the background while you only pay half attention to it, 42 dB fan noise is fine.

If this is going to be for your main TV watching experience and you haven't taken a lot of steps to improve the audio environment (e.g. having lots of soft furnishings and blocking the direct path from the fan outlet to your ears), 42 dB might be annoying.

          • +2

@Homr: review from this model even worse, check above comment, 3 months and died

        • Other than that comparison review, the only other one I found is this Indian blog:

The main difference between Happrun L2 & H1 is that L2 comes with additional wifi connectivity, better and brighter display quality, and larger projection size.

But then, right in the beginning, he says that when choosing between the L2 and the H1, pick the F5, which he doesn't even mention in the text! (Wrong link?)

Out of the two Happrun models in question, this model that I have linked is certainly the better buy. It comes with an additional Wifi connectivity option, a bigger projection size, and higher-quality video output.

What's even more confusing is that Happrun doesn't even have the L2 on their own website!

      • Buy both, keep the better one?

      • I bought it
        Came through as $107
        Reviews are great
Peace of mind purchasing via Amazon

        • L2 or H1?

          • @wisdomtooth: Great question. Their descriptions and matching images are wrong it seems (I actually missed your above comment before pulling the trigger).
            https://ibb.co/F4rLkzJ
I bought the 400ANSI yesterday which looks to be their L2. It has already been dispatched but will likely return it, as I've just ordered the proper L2, which is the 12000L for $89 (25% off "limited deal")
Not sure how everyone is getting $102, unless they've increased the discount today?

            • +2

@bradstud92: Update: their "12000L" is the F5 and 400ANSI is the L2. Tested both and F5 kills it. The only perk of the L2 is that it comes with a neat carry case. Will return the L2.

              • @bradstud92: You're kidding me! Have just done the same; thanks for the heads up. And I too got it for $89 😊

Now that I've already pulled the trigger… "kills it" how?

                • +1

                  @wisdomtooth: Nice.
UI is newer and cleaner, the picture is brighter, menus are easier to navigate.
Only con is the crappy lens cover that easily falls off.

  • If anyone's into race or flight sims, would be perfect for a cheap version of this:

  • apparently stunning quality better than OLED

    • OLED projector?? 🤔

    • uh… no.

This one has blurry corners, dim picture, abysmal colour gamut, 3W speaker, 1080p resolution, inbuilt heater and requires space wide enough to project.

It does cost less and has a larger picture tho.

      • -1

This one has blurry corners, dim picture, abysmal colour gamut

        Not according to these tests.

        3W speaker

Is anyone really going to watch projected movies (or play games for that matter) without connecting BT speakers? With the sound coming from the projector instead of near the screen??

        1080p resolution

4K projectors start at $3,000. Different product category.

requires space wide enough to project.

1.26 throw ratio, but you can project it smaller, if you prefer.

        • +3

It was a comparison against an OLED TV as a reply.

Bought a chinese projector last Christmas. It's a 2023 boxy version and am happy with it for the price I paid $107. The picture is bright and colourful enough and I think it is value for money. Will use it for gaming and maybe 1080p content. Also own an OLED TV.

          • @skid: Right! Yeah, there's no comparison to an OLED screen. Glad you like yours. How do you reckon it compares to the Happrun's? I paid A$102 on the smart one delivered. Couldn't find any serious review of it, though (just guys doing unboxings and reading out specs on camera).

            • +1

@wisdomtooth: I was close to pulling the trigger on the Happrun. Over Christmas, it dropped to $84. As you know, it was highly reviewed by The Hook Up on youtube. From the Chinese lumen specs, the Happrun would be slightly dimmer than the one I went with and I think it has manual keystone. Both are minor points really. I think the Happrun is a good buy and safe because it has been reviewed. The other projector I was considering were the Xuanpads which seem cheap against the Chinese specs and always in stock.

              • @skid: A$84?? Damn!

I went for the L2, which quotes 12,000lm (at the source, no doubt, not from the screen) instead of the 9,500 of the H1. The L2 has digital keystone, which the H1 doesn't. I'm hoping this means it doesn't necessarily need to be horizontally centred with the screen (though I realise there is a price in focus on the edges for that convenience).

The Xuanpads are also top of the heap in Amazon salsa.

  • How does this compare to the cheap Ali express projectors at the $60-$100 range? Anyone had both?

      • +1

I bought the 320 for like $58. Considering the focus rating on mine apparently is 6 and this got a 7 and requires a large room for projection whereas mine is almost a short throw projector mine suits my needs better. Admittedly it’s kinda average picture quality though but from what I understand this probably doesn’t perform a lot better. Still probably a decent option for someone out there.

        • +1

According to the aforementioned review, it does perform a whole lot better than the HY320 (not to mention the difference in noise).

          • +1

@wisdomtooth: Yea I agree but not for my purposes. My bedroom is too small to even set it up haha.

  • +12

Three weeks ago I paid $114.64 for this after coupons from Amazon AU for use in a cabin over the holidays. Ran about 8 movies through it while we were away.

The contrast and brightness was arse, and required tweaking depending on the movie or it was too bright or too dark, and the picture was washed out, but it was fine enough for what we needed it for.

The built in speakers are rubbish, but bluetoothing to the Sonos Roam was easy enough.

Running video files off a USB stick required me to reformat the files to H.264, and the sound and video would desync every 20 minutes or so. This could be reset by going back to the menu and then reloading the file, but at least it remembered where you left off.

It only reads memory sticks formatted to smaller FAT32 clusters, it doesn't read exFAT so has a maximum file size of 4GB. Modern memory sticks out of the box couldn't be read.

Next time I'll run the movie off a laptop, but the USB stick would have been handy had it worked properly.

All up it's a rock-bottom quality unit. It even comes with a "surprise!" menu where the surprise is that there is nothing under that menu. The whole OS feels like something designed in the mid 1990s, literally.

I'm not unhappy with the purchase as a throw away portable option for the kids, but next time I'd definitely spend more money and get a proper unit. Cheap in this case is a false economy if you have any intention of using it semi-regularly.

    • +2

      So it's basically a POS.

I was tempted to buy this, but not anymore… Confirmation biased myself out of this.

I have a projector that is at least 12 years old, an old Epson that I've paid over $1k. The max resolution is 480p, which can be increased via software to 1080p which of course, looks like a horse's arse. But, it still works, and I watch a movie or two a week on it along with Netflix shows and it's K dramas, even some ps5 sometimes, and you're not watching at close range anyways like in the cinema (where it also looks like she ite). The point I'm trying to make is that if you go for no-name cheapo, it will become land fill (again, I'm confirmation biased), better to spend more and buy from a trusted brand instead of wasting $150.

(But then again, I'm sure Amazon will step up if this projector stops working etc.)

      • -1

better to spend more and buy from a trusted brand

If you'd rather pay for brand than put in the time to find true value in the no-name bargain basket… what are you even doing here??

        • If you'd rather pay for brand than put in the time to find true value in the no-name bargain basket… what are you even doing here??

We are here to look for bargains, this is not a platform to advertise cheap noname risky electronics that likely will end up in the trash sooner than later.

          • -3

@smartProverble: Everything ends up in the trash sooner or later.

I mean, if you want to pay top dollar for top brand, that's fine. It's just not bargain hunting.

            • @wisdomtooth: We look for bargains on big brands, brands we know and can trust.

Cheap noname brands from china are cheap for a reason and should not be considered bargains.

              • @smartProverble: "We" who? If you're paying for branding, it's not a bargain, by definition. A bargain is a good value-to-price ratio; there is no value in branding to the informed consumer. Bargain hunting is searching for value, not discount seeking.

But you do you; keep buying your well known Jeep, BMW, Holden branded cars, and I'll be here buying GWM and BYD 😉

        • +1

what are you even doing here??

          @wisdomtooth
we're looking for the best value. This is what defines a bargain.

When I buy a projector, I want the best possible 4K picture that I can get for my money, with the minimum of input lag. All these crappy budget units aren't in the running - I don't see them as bargains at any price 🤷🏼‍♂️

          • -1

            @Nom:

we're looking for the best value. This is what defines a bargain. When I buy a projector, I want the best possible … picture that I can get for my money

            Then we agree ☺️

@smartProverble doesn't. To him, brand name is important. At this time and age, when western household names are in frank decline, and unknown Asian names are in skyrocketing ascendance, it's a position at odds with being true blue OzBargainer.

            • @wisdomtooth: No mate, you are twisting my words and yours.

I agree with @Nom, and not your previous statements.

We want value regardless of where it's from. Some random no name Chinese electronics do not count as value just because it's cheap.

              • -1

@smartProverble: Ofc not "just because it's cheap", but being "no name Chinese" is not relevant either. Name is irrelevant to value, other than for showing off. On the contrary, name costs money, making it less likely to be a bargain (i.e. lower value-to-price ratio).

  • what about the other wifi version - 400ANSI $169 with 40% discount

  • I could not find much info on the throw ratio. Can anyone guess, whats the max size of screen would this throw in a room of 3.9m X 3.1m size?

    • +1

      1.26, here (at 3 mins).

You can practically cover the 3.1m wall with it (though I don't think it's rated for that much amplification). Or cover 2.46m of the 3.9m wall.

    • +2

My portable screen was 2.66W x 1.48H and it was perfectly fine. Although it wasn't using the entirety of the screen it took up a good chunk of it.

The limitation will be that the wider you go the further back that the projector will need to be from the screen, but certainly it should be sufficient for your room and the focus was good at that size.

  • +2

Bought this one for $128.99, all the reviews are positive with samples of videos and images projected by the projector and I think it's a last year model. https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0D668CL5P?ref_=ppx_hzod_title_…

Deals like this where it's like $68 USD… $115 AUD inc GST make me yearn for the glory days of international online shopping in like 2011/2012 where it was $68 USD = $60~ AUD, no GST 😅

    • Good ol' GFC

      • and good old Gerry.

  • It shows $59.99 now. Has the link being updated?

    • No, they lowered the price, and took out the discount. Still cheaper buying at the AU store.

  • +1

Received mine today. I'm impressed! The picture is certainly doable for the odd movie night where you're not too fussed about getting the best picture quality.

Will be great when we go down to the beach.

I kinda regret getting this model and not the Wi-Fi one. Would have been nice to wirelessly cast my MacBook screen, phone screen.

Can anyone with the wireless version comment on how good the WiFi mirroring is?

I didn't opt for it as it isn't a huge deal to run a cable and I didn't really want something like this on my network…but now I am second guessing.

    • +1

EDIT: I'm content now. Have just tried the following setup and it works perfectly.

      • Chromecast plugged into the HDMI port of the projector
      • USB port on the projector powers the Chromecast
      • Projector connected via bluetooth to my soundbar.
      • The advantage of this one is that, without much electronics middlemanaging the image, the lag is small (<20ms), making it better for gaming.

    • +1

I’ve had one for a while and for the price they’re excellent.

Only issue I had with mine was flakey Bluetooth for the sound.

Sure they don’t get very bright, but for $100 odd they’re amazing.
