What are people's opinion on the best PB from a health perspective?
Obviously the first caveat is that all PBs are especially calorie-dense and many will need to keep portions under check to achieve an appropriate energy balance.
I've been getting the Mayver's Protein variety. Only 3 ingredients listed (few additive), high-oleic oil peanuts (high MUFA and good fat profile), protein 32g/100g, fibre 9.1g/100g, saturated 5.3g/100g, sugar 6.9/100g, sodium 396mg/100g.
Fantastic taste and texture.
I like the Bega branded crunchy one but it's probably the worst for you health wise…. When it comes to peanut butter I just want the best tasting one, it's my vice.
Bega simply nutz is where its at
Thanks, I shall try
Bega branded crunchy one but it's probably the worst for you health wise
Why?
It has
Roasted Peanuts (85%), Vegetable Oil (Contains Antioxidant (320), Sugar, Salt.
Has sugar.
@tabboy: So?
Pics has
Sugars - Total
5.9g per 100gBega has
Sugars - Total
7.9g per 100gSo assuming the peanuts used by Pics and Bega have the same sugar content then Bega have added an insignificant 2g of sugar per 100g
The only ingredients should be peanuts and salt (water). Just get Mayvers.
Funny everyone scared of sugar but you can have as much fat and salt as you want.
Anything that’s purely peanut with at most some salt. Any added sugar should be a no-go. It’s not needed.
What brand then?
Mayvers
@Mr Frodo: i'll check that out.
If there's anything other than peanuts/salt in it, something is very wrong
Why?
Have you tried PB Fit or PB2?
I was looking to try this one as Costco has the organic version on sale now, but I could see they have the "No added sugar version" which is the best in terms of macros.
bega is cheaper on Amazon

Plenty of options using Aussie Peanuts.
Support local where practical.Bega Simply Nuts is Aussie Peanuts and on special for almost the same value.
I've tried Bega and didn't like it as much. Mayver's used to be Australian peanuts. Pic's is proudly Kiwi and has factory tours over there.
Who else does Aussie high oleic peanuts?Mayvers Peanut origin depends on SKU.
Smooth normal is usually aussie peanuts.
Protein version is not aussie peanuts.Pic's is proudly Kiwi but they don't use Kiwi peanuts. Initially they sourced their High Oleic peanuts from AUS and they proudly mentioned this on their jars but some years back they switched to High Oleic peanuts from various other countries. These days you can't even find the source of the High Oleic peanuts listed on their jars. I've switched to Bega and Mayver's.
They used to have this tool on their website where you can type in a jar's batch code and it'll show where the peanuts are from: https://web.archive.org/web/20240420045104/https://www.picsp…
Bega and Bega Simply Nuts are different.
To me the Bega Simply Nuts tastes close to the old Mayvers (but not quite).
Yet to find something close to the old Mayvers Dark Roast!
Ridiculously Delicious is one of the best, tastes like how Pic’s used to. But its pricey and not in the major supermarkets. Worth a try if you’re into peanut butter though
I used to buy Mayver's, but I buy Ridiculous Delicious now. It's only at IGA and maybe other small retailers though, so it's a bit inconvenient to buy. It's also not for those on a tight budget.
These are good if you're not into sweet peanut butter!
How do we avoid non-Oceania peanuts? I grabbed some pics but when I checked the label (if I recall right) it didn’t specify whether they were actually NZ-grown.
here at Pic's Peanut Butter, our peanuts are sourced from Australia, Brazil, and a little from Argentina.
Go for Bega and Mayver's!
Mayver's
usemostly use imported peanuts now, a limited part of their range may use Australian peanuts, however you need to check each time.I look for the ones which say 100% AUSTRALIAN on the label like this one - https://www.coles.com.au/product/mayver's-crunchy-natural-pe… and this https://www.coles.com.au/product/mayver's-smooth-natural-pea….
@ganjadeals: I think you found the only two!
Due to the volume of peanuts we need to keep supply of our Mayver’s range in the market (we sell a large amount of peanut butter each year), currently we are unable to source enough Australian peanuts to make up 100% of Australian peanuts for our total range. As Australia unfortunately can’t produce enough peanuts we require for our Mayver’s spreads – even if we took the total amount of Australian peanuts grown each year. However, our regular Mayver's Crunchy and Smooth Peanut Butter are 100% Australian.
I wouldn't be worried as much about foreign peanuts, than say foreign frozen fish.
Having watched this brand start and grow, it remains my favourite peanut butter after moving over from NZ. Pair it with raspberry jam for a delicious PB&J!
Any suggestion for raspberry jam would be great. Tia
Not a jam connoisseur, sorry. Any will do for my undistinguished tastebud (for jam), as long as it’s with Pic’s.
Good PB, same with Mayvers but requires some strength to stir when the oils and solids split.
I recently tried the Mayvers Lovli Spoon No Stir and although is has added oils (Shea & Coconut Oil) its much more enjoyable and less tacky than the standard variants. Has a little bit of sugar and salt which makes it even more enjoyable.
I've also tried the Lovli Spoon range, and the sugar in it is extremely noticeable. Mine also still needed to be stirred!
Much prefer the OG Mayvers range.
If you prefer a sweeter PB though, then yeah, the Lovli Spoon range is alright.
Really Good Peanut Butter
No it's not
I'll wait for half price $2.90 Mayvers.
When pics arrived on the supermarket shelves. We could not believe it was cheaper for AU to send peanuts to NZ, for them to process and send it back to AU. Conquer the market and raise the prices.
Sometimes you can get $7 1kg QLD roasted peanuts. DIY, beats any peanut paste on the supermaket shelves or taste.
Mayvers have sold out, mostly imported.
Bega simply nuts in glass jar is good.
We like been sticky.
Pic's is my partner and I's favourite peanut butter, have been drizzling it over vanilla ice cream for a delicious evening dessert (also found Blue Ribbon's vegan ice cream > dairy ice cream!).
We however use Bega's crunchy peanut butter for smoothies as you can buy a bigger jar and it's cheaper.
Which vanilla ice cream do you buy? This sounds like a delicious idea which has never occurred to me
Blue Ribbon's Plant Based Creamy Vanilla - I'm not a vegan but this honestly tastes better and leaves you feeling better than the dairy stuff. Also doesn't melt as fast.
Thanks. I was aware of brands like Pana but wasn't aware Streets were in the plant based game as well. Seems I'm streets behind
Even the dairy version of Blue Ribbon doesn't contain enough dairy fat to be legally called ice cream.
You are better off comparing an actual ice cream like Bulla to the non-dairy versions.@OzzyBrak: Illegal ice cream? Sign me up!
Recently only came across Streets Blue Ribbon Plant Vanilla, it's great tasting and smooth, $6.50 every day for 2L is very reasonable.
I haven't bought any since the days of Sanitarium so good and it's a lot better than that (it's back but ripoff for 1L and barely ever on special; used to be ok for $5).
Made in NZ, I'll pass.
That red star on it means that I buy anything else. What a strange world where that's blindly accepted.
huh? what's wrong with that?
It could mean a bunch of things, apparently - but most likeley nothing really, just a star - it's peanut damn butter ffs.
Yeah that's what I thought, he's reading too much into it.
I'm nuts for peanut butter.
