MyDeal Refund Issue Because Gift Cards Were Used for Purchase

Good day OzBarginers, I'm in a bit of a predicament with MyDeal in getting a refund because I used gift cards to purchase a vacuum & it was faulty, so I had to return it.

MyDeal contacted me via email said they couldn't send a replacement because they were out of stock so they were refunding. I replied back saying I had purchased the vacuum with gift cards. They then stated they couldn't refund me through a different payment method and that they can only refund through the payment method I used for the purchase. I was told I needed to contact the institution that I purchased the gift cards from to proceed with a refund.

I purchased Wish gift cards through Everyday rewards portal and then I used them to purchase the vacuum through MyDeal in the "New" Rewards Shop portal during Black Friday sales.

I've messaged the Rewards Shop support but won't hear anything till tomorrow because it's after hours. Has anyone else been through this situation with MyDeal before?

I'm hoping this isn't about to get ugly ):

(Sorry Admins if I've posted incorrectly, it's my first post)

UPDATE 13/1 :
I have received only a partial refund back to gift cards as of today and called Rewards Shop Support and asked why I have not received the rest of the refund that is owed to me.
They said they will file an enquiry with there upper management to find out what has happened and to expect an email or phone call in 3 to 5 days.

UPDATE 14/1 :
I am happy to say this is the final update of my refund story and have received my full refund back.
I've learned a valuable lesson and will not be making the same mistake again.
Thats all folks!

      You wish

    • Normally can't refund to a GC and they'll choose to refund as store credit instead

However, OP probably saved $4.20, so it's not all bad.

This is why gift cards are not worth it! Or just use them purely for groceries and fuel.

    • I totally agree and have learnt my lesson from this!
All that I saved doing it through the gift cards was about $15….not worth the trouble its caused.

  • you'll just need to cop a store credit

  • MyDeal know the deal.

If you purchase with a gift card, you get refunded back to the gift card (or store credit if the gift card doesn't accept refunds).

That's how gift cards work. You lose flexibility for saving a few dollars.

So you generally shouldn't buy gift cards for a one off purchase at a store that you don't normally purchase from in case they run out of stock etc. Or you should at least acknowledge and accept the risk.

    • Exactly. I bought discounted TCN gift cards and wanted something at Reebok, who was a TCN partner, but you had to swap the card. I didn’t want to risk it so ordered via credit card. Ended up not liking the shoes and returned them.

I’ve had this with Woolworths and Wish gift cards buying online groceries. Woolworths issues a credit for gift card via a code. There is a workaround during the initial purchase, and that’s to pay a small amount by CC. Eg. Groceries $200, pay $185 gift cards, $15 CC. As long as any refund (due to out of stock items) is $15 or less then the refund goes to CC. On receipt of the code, start a new order, paste the code, and leave it sit until you are ready to start the order. Something learnt during lockdown, but couldn’t be bothered to do that now I don’t need delivery. Why use Wish gift cards - 5% is 5%.
