Apple is not doing this out of goodwill per se, notice how the dates specifically exclude Christmas to the start of the promotion.
The holiday return policy allows for:
Eligible products at the Apple Store Online that are received between 8 November 2024 and 25 December 2024 may be returned until 8 January 2025.
So in some ways even if this "appeasement" did not exist, one could simply return their product purchased during this period, and then purchase it again with todays announced promotion. Hence why also this "appeasement" is only valid today.
In saying that, piggy banking off this, if you purchased a product from 26 December to 7 January, you can simply benefit off the standard 14 days
You can return your items to an Apple Retail Store within 14 calendar days of receiving your order.

I bought mine on the 28th, I miss the timing window on when Apple support was live and just dropped a message. I am hopping they would do an appeasement tomorrow :( Kinda waste of packaging/time to just return the iPad Air for the pencil.
