      • Hi @WookieMonster
I used 4 of these cards to pay a $400 bill
3 went through. 1 got declined.
The 3 that went through show as "processed" on the balance check. The one that got declined shows the $100 credit from Coles and the $100 debit from the place I was trying to pay, but it shows as "pending".
The 07 56606022 phone number on the card is "not taking calls at this time".
I think the "pending" transaction will eventually clear (how long?) and the $100 will show as available again. Have you ever encountered this?

        • +1

          It can vary.

I've had two recent experiences of merchants refunding an online purchase paid for with a Coles Mastercard gift card. One refund took 4 business days, and the other took 2 business days. In both cases, the original purchase transaction was processed, and a refund transaction appeared on the card with the refund amount credited to my card.

          • @WookieMonster: In this case it was a in store transactions and I was shown the printout of the 3 successful transactions and one declined. So the merchant is out of the picture for the declined one I guess.
Annoying that Coles Mastercards are racking in hundres ot thousands of $ and cannot even answer the calls on the provided number.

            • @Mad Max: Considering you clarified that it was an in-store transaction (rather than an online transaction), it is very strange to hear that there is a $100 pending charge on your gift card. If the transaction was declined by InComm, there should be no pending transaction on the gift card at all. When you check the balance of that gift card, there should either be no evidence of a transaction, or a line that says Declined - <transaction details> <transaction amount>. When I tried to use a Coles Mastercard gift card to pay my car rego at Australia Post last year, the transaction was declined by InComm (decline code 12 - Transaction Not Allowed) and I could see a line on the balance check website saying Declined…. There was no pending charge on my gift card associated with that declined transaction.

Did the EFTPOS terminal or the printout give you the reason the transaction was declined? In my case, only the EFTPOS terminal told me the decline code.

It would be interesting to hear what InComm says about the pending transaction. I just called 07 5660 6022 and was able to get through to the automated voiceover that asked for my gift card's card number.

              • @WookieMonster: Exactly that! I was paying my rego at the transport department.
The declined printout says declined 57.
They accepted the first 2 cards. Third was declined. Fourth accepted
Checked again the balance and they all show pending $100 debit from transport department. I ended up paying the balance cash.

                • @Mad Max: I have never come across decline code 57 before, and after reading multiple definitions, it sounds more like it would be InComm declining the transaction, rather than the merchant. However, it is all still very strange to me, because I have never seen InComm or any other card issuer/operator decline a transaction at the point of sale, yet still hold a pending amount.

Have you had any luck back reaching out to InComm? They are probably the only ones that can shed more light on this situation.

                  • @WookieMonster: Got answered now. I had the mobile on no send number. That may be why.
But went through all the selections and could not find a way to speak to a human. May be out of business hours?

                    • @Mad Max: I don't think it is outside of business hours, because the cardholder agreement says:

Customer Service agents are available to answer your calls twenty‑four (24) hours a day, seven (7) days a week.

I went through the menu myself and heard option 6 ("Report A Problem"). Did you hear that option? I did not want to select that myself, because I was calling using a Coles Mastercard gift card with $0 balance and I did not actually want to report a problem and end up causing a new issue on my gift card.

                  • @WookieMonster: Message said being transferred to an operator then silence and call disconnected 5 minutes later…

                    • @Mad Max: Hmmm it definitely sounds like you should try again later.

                      • @WookieMonster: Thought it may be because outside business hours. Do you know if their phone lines are open till late?

                        • @Mad Max: I am not entirely sure. I have never called them this late in the day (Australian time).

                          • @WookieMonster: I just managed to speak with them. It looks like the person at the transport department stuffed up. The first time I swiped the card the transaction was approved and money requested. He told me that it didn't go though and to try again. The second time the transaction got declined (no more funds). He showed me the second receipt that said transaction declined.
The coles mastercard guy on the phone said that if the funds don't get taken within 7 days they go back on the card in 8 days. But now who knows what the guy at the transport department did. It looks like I will be going back there again tomorrow! Definitely not worth the effort for the small saving. Especially when you have to rely on someone else to execute the transaction properly.

                            • @Mad Max: Well that sucks.

Fingers crossed you can get to the bottom of what is going on, and I get a feeling the transport department are going to be difficult to deal with…

                              • +1

@WookieMonster: Yeah, the transport department say that in their reconciliation the transaction didn't go through. The giftcard phone assistance say that the amount got requested, but it will be credited back to the card on 24.1.25 if the merchant doesn't settle the transaction.
I can only wait. At least none of the parts involved is a scam risk. Just a pita.
All considered these cards are borderline worth the effort if everything goes well. In that case you are about $25 better off (for 5 cards). Even then only worth if you already going to Coles and can pick them up while there. Certainly not worth if you have to make a trip just for the cards.
If anything at all goes wrong, and there are many things that can go wrong, from failed activation, tampered card, hacked card, merchant transaction problems, etc, then the amount of time needed to sort it out (if indeed you manage to sort it out) make the $25 gain nothing compared to the hassle and waste of time involved.

      • Hi, I tried to pay Melbourne council rates using this gift card in person 2 austpost but got declined.

Swiped the card > cheque or savings (chose savings ) > Enter Pin ( pressed enter as no pin )>
        declined .

Went another Aust post and set the pin.
Told just via card , didn't show gift card

Swiped the card > cheque or savings (chose savings ) > Enter new pin > declined .

Anyone else has a way to bypass this ?

        • The reason the two transactions were declined was because you chose Savings (which meant you were trying to route the payment through the eftpos network, which is a network not supported on Coles Mastercard gift cards). You need to choose Credit if you are ever asked about payment routing on these gift cards.

It sounds like you were not given the Credit option to begin with, and that there are two explanations for this:

          1. You did not tell the staff member you wanted to use a Mastercard. With in-store payments at Australia Post, you need to be specific on the type of payment card you want to use. When I was paying my car rego last year, I was told the payment card options were: eftpos, Mastercard, Visa debit1 and Visa credit. If you only say card to the staff member, they may just guess and randomly choose one of the options.

          2. The biller (in this case, Melbourne City Council) does not accept Mastercard or Visa payments at Australia Post. A biller can choose the payment methods they accept at Australia Post, and some (e.g. ATO) choose to not accept Mastercard or Visa at all.

Reason 2 is more likely the most applicable explanation in this situation, because the Melbourne City Council website says "credit cards not accepted" if making payments in-person at Australia Post. To me, that sounds like all Mastercard and Visa payments are not accepted, even Mastercard payments from Coles Mastercard gift cards. If you are willing to try again, go to an Australia Post outlet and ask Melbourne City Council accepts Mastercard payments through Australia Post. If Mastercard is not accepted, you will need to either use another supported payment method at Australia Post or see whether you can use your Coles Mastercard gift card through one of the other available payment options.

          1. The Visa debit option is really just eftpos. If you choose this option and you tap, insert or swipe a card, the Credit option will not appear for some reason, even if your card supports Visa.

          • +1

@WookieMonster: Thank you so much! I'm sure it will help others like me.

The second austpost I went I did say card and she just told me to swipe and declined.

On my rates' post bill pay it says credit cards not accepted . Pay in store at Australia Post.
( So I assume it was "savings")

Also on the rates, it says in person at town Hall and visa, Mastercard and Eftpos available and I asked the chatbox it's 0.33% for card payments - the same if paid the rates on council website .
It's still a low surcharge and getting credit card points from buying the gift card .
But thought if anyone can bypass this for free, but looks like not.

            Appreciate your explanation

          • @WookieMonster: I accidentally voter negative which is not my intention!!! And I can't seem to change it cause it says I've voted.
            So sorry !!

              @y_owez: All good!

    • I have had them accepted at 3 Councils in Victoria, Yarra Valley Water, Glowbird and Momentum.

      • May I ask which council and if it was via Aust post office?

        • I pay rates at Stonnington, Darebin and Monash. I pay them on the council's website but I think you could also do it via Post billpay as you can load up these cards on Paypal. Darebin is the only one that charges a surcharge and paying direct it is .33% while through Post billpay it is .50%. This may be because their website only accepts MasterCard and Visa. I paid for all of these last week.

          • +1

            @Yola: Thanks for that.
Melbourne council charges 0.33% on their website and in person at town hall.

Auspost post bill pay doesn’t accept it ( no option for credit card ) and the post pay website doesn’t recognise the biller code.
I guess my only option is pay the 0.33% via the council web or townhall

Tried a few Coles and there is no stock everywhere. So I asked the cashier at service counter and had a meaningful conversation:
"There was no stock yesterday as well. Will there be any new stock arriving?"
She said, "No probably not. The store manager is on leave. There is no one ordering new stock."

Oh! That explains the extremely low stock every Dec and Jan.

    • You can certainly tell which stores have had their Store Managers bunk off after a Christmas haha! Though I've never noticed it specifically with gift cards, just in general the way the wheels start falling off store operations. One day there'll be no bread/hot cross buns because "nobody ordered any" or there'll be no hot chickens or half the fruit and veg section will be empty.

At any rate my local had plenty of stock of these cards. Got my 5 per account. I miss the times when the only limit was 5 per day.

      • You'd think they'd automate their stock replenishment system by now…

        • I'm certain that it is, or at least majority is, but there's still an element of somebody needing to keep an eye on inventory. The boss goes on holiday and everyone slacks off.

      • At least with the hot chicken you can get one for free later on.

  • Can I split the 5 card transaction across 2 separate transactions on same day ? I did split , but only received bonus point for only one transaction??

    • +1

      You should be able to.

I purchased two Coles Mastercard gift cards on Wednesday across two separate transactions, and I received the standard and bonus points for both transactions yesterday afternoon.

    • I did the same - received base points for both transactions + bonus points for one transaction yesterday, and the remaining bonus points today.

  • I suspect stores did not have time to restock so none of them have 100s which were cleared out in the last promo

  • Today I purchased five cards with an expiry date of 07/29 in one transaction. Activation was declined for all. On Wednesday, I bought five cards with the same expiry, and these were OK. The staff had no idea why, although I did not expect them to know.

    • +1

These cards are becoming too much of a hit and miss lottery.
Delays and sometimes troubles getting the bonus points.
Troubles with activation, tampering, hacking, troubles when using them.
And when things go wrong it takes a lot of time and effort to sort things out.
I am not sure I will bother again for the measly benefit.

      • YMMV of course but I haven't had single issue with these cards and I'm well over $50,000 worth purchased in the existing format. The only 'problem' I have with the promo is the change they made to limit it to 5 cards per account. I miss the good old days when we could fill our boots.

        • I am nowhere near your $50k record, but for the few I have had, I already had activation problems (staff often don't know what to do), hacked card (had to wait weeks to get a refund), and now troubles with it being declined (merchant refers you to card issuer, card issuer refers you to merchant!).
What do you use that many cards for?

          • +2

@Mad Max: ATO, rates, utilities, bills, the rest into gift cards.

  • I haven't bought the $100 gift cards due to no stock. What's odd is several Coles also didn't have any of the other denominations including the $50 cards with the $5 purchase fee. The $100 cards were not restocked from the last offer at the Coles I went to.

  • My local Coles is normally ok stock wise for these -had plenty of $250 and no $100s, i was there in a lull so thought I would ask the staff, they said check along the different checkouts ( where you load groceries) nope none there so a couple of staff decided to open up aladdins cave bingo got 3 and as I wandered off they found more mixed in so loaded the display.
    Went away happy.

What a shonk promo….mate and I have been looking for $100s since Wed am….we must have been to at least a dozen Coles stores around Sydney in total….he has bought 20 and myself 15…..but was it worth the time and effort? Probably not….

    • so you're one of the reasons why i can't find any stock around Sydney

these offers are tiresome.. the last few rounds i never found any $100s

  • Coles local south Melbourne Normanby Rd has 9 $100 left after I bought mine.

  • Coles Runaway Bay QLD has about 10 $100 cards left as of 5 mins ago.

  • Can these prepaid mastercard be added to Paypal?

    • I have in the last few months- ( but I guess this could change)
      @bumpyhead

    • +1

I added one to PayPal and used it on the Woolworth Gift Card portal yesterday.
