Instead of heating these plastic containers to an extremely high temperature and hoping not too many microplastic particles enter your food, you could just cook your own rice at home, package it carefully in a glass container, then heat that up instead. Would probably be cheaper in the long term and just as easy.

Indeed, I'm still waiting for a decent 2cup rice cooker to pop up on OZB

      You've missed the 'quick' part.

      People buy these for convenience.

      • You can freeze rice in portions and microwave it to reheat it. Lazy example from Google Search.

Balances the environmental impact, cost, convenience, and if you're concerned about microplastics.

These packet rices are also processed, which is apparently worse for you than unprocessed (non-“quick”) rice

    • I decant them into the bowl I'll eat from, and microwave that with a cover on.

If you have nothing else, a plate placed over the top will do. Best if the seal is imperfect.

This is about half water, if not less (look at the nutrition label, compare the energy content). So you're paying $1.75 for 125g of rice, plus the convenience of having them pre-cook it for you.

    That's $14 / kg of rice.

Normal price is $3.25 / kg of uncooked Sunrice brown rice https://www.amazon.com.au/Rice-Brown-2Kg/dp/B00B7DNPF6

    You know what to do.

    • Agreed, people are just lazy and want the quickest/easiest meal these days, then complain when they don't have money and/or are overweight.

White rice is better for you

    • +2

Although white rice is processed, it's usually enriched with added nutrients. Also, its low fiber content may help with digestive issues. Brown rice, however, is more nutritious, contains more fiber, and is a better choice for diabetes, heart disease and weight maintenance.
