Probably didn't want to mention it's from Harvey Norman.

      I'd argue for 16GB RAM

Maybe in 2027 , i think ill allow it for now

    • +1

I'd argue for 512GB. Cases like working with documents, internet usage, and programming do not require more than 256GB.

you'd be mad to be pay $1000 for that dank screen

Not nearly as good a deal as last weeks from HN when it was $568. Unless I'm missing something.

    • Yeah that’s an Aspire, not Ideapad

    • this one is definitely better with a12450U, and I would pay extra for the smaller size

TN panel in this one - probably not the greatest given my experience with Lenovo TN panels in the Slim 3 range.

  • Which would be good for my grade 7 kid?

    • +2

This should get the job done but possibly consider a cheaper ex-corp refurb if your kid isn't the most careful with his tech

      • +2

Thanks for your suggestion. I would consider that

      • Yep, I second this. You can get some decent ex-corp refurbs on ebay for cheap. In my experience for Lenovo stuff their only decent product lines they have are their Legion line or Thinkpads ( the older models are tough as nails)….Ideapads are typically sub-par in build quality

I'm on the same Y7 device quest at the moment. First child got a new HP Envy x360 for ~$850. It did not last.

Lenovo T14S Gen2 AMD - 16/256, approx 3y old, $534 with a coupon. I use a very similar (Intel) T14 for work, daily. Very reliable.

          • @hughc: I am currently on a very similar one (Thinkpad L14 gen2 AMD) which is very close to the one you linked above. Quite happy - I changed the screen to be a lower-powered 400 nits screen, upgraded the Wifi to Intel instead of MediaTek, has 2 ram slots so updated to 64 GB, upgraded the SSD to 2TB…I really love how modular they are. The only disappointing thing is the screen has some flex to it.
I used to have this model https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/305973790479?_skw=thinkpad+e495&… which was more sturdy with an aluminum lid

            • @fatpotato123: In my experience aluminium counts for little, unless it's milled like a MacBook. Pressed aluminium skin of the Envy offered even less protection than the plastic of a Thinkpad. Getting my needle nosed pliers out to straighten out the charging port was something I had to do.

Unfortunately, beyond SSH (and maybe wifi) the T series aren't upgradeable much these days (I have an old T580 and it is similar to the L series you describe, inc 2 RAM slots)

  • I was looking for a laptop yesterday and settled on this HP: https://www.hp.com/au-en/shop/hp-255-15-6-inch-g9-notebook-p…

Ryzen 5 processor, 16GB RAM, 512GB HDD, 15.6" screen. If you use code JUSTFORYOU5 you can get 5% off, and stack with ShopBack for another 5% cashback, it comes out cheaper than this deal

    • Ouch HP, good luck!

      • +1

        I thought hp was good??

        • Not in my experience, cheap plastickie crap full of bloatware

  • I purchased one of these back in 2023. Same design - slightly different specs.
I read about the TN display but looking at it in the darkened Harvey Norman showroom I thought it wasn't that bad. Boy was I wrong. It's absolutely pathetic in the real world.
Also the battery life is nothing to write home about. Other than that, it's held up pretty well so far.

  • Considering you can get something considerably better with warranty on the second hand market. This one would be a definite pass.
