    Used to get cheap return to Singapore or Malaysia. Then low cost airline to get to India. Not finding $500 return flights to those countries anymore. Cheapest ever was around $480 return Brisbane to Amritsar on scoot.

    March should be ok to visit. May is crazy hot!

    It is hot and humid in August with sporadic monsoon rains, I'd avoid.

      True, there are better months to go. Anything between December to March is my pick if you can't handle the heat. However, prices would be different for those dates for sure.

      I visited in 2010, and it's a fascinating destination. Yes, there is the bad (quite a lot of it) that comes with the good. It's the world's most populous country and I'd recommend it if you're looking for a destination off the very beaten track.

      On the contrary, I found most European countries chaotic and full of scammers. Never once encountered a scammer or pickpockets in India when visited multiple times. Only found nice, genuinely hardworking and lovely people in India. Have you ever visited India or are these your assumptions based off the interwebs? Yes it can get too hot there so if you cannot handle heat then stay away, but most Asian countries can get hot and chaotic, not just India.
