Pool Water Testing - Pool Stores or Bunnings?

Hi, I usually check the pool water every 2-3 weeks.

I always do it at my local pool store. They are more expensive. Good customer service.

I went to Bunnings this morning and realise that they offer pool testing. It is super convenient for me to go to Bunnings instead and check my pool water instead of the pool shop.

My question is, if you usually check your pool water at Bunnings, are you happy with the service and outcome for your pool?

Thanks.

Bunnings staff would have next to zero knowledge of pool water and how to fix it. So if you need guidance on your results, head to the pool shop.

correct, i dont own a pool and couldn't careless about there pool tbh (and because i have zero knowledge), i send the customers down to the local pool shop down the road

Sounds like he doesn't have an attitude checker app either.

Why not just buy a test kit?

Pool shops often do free testing so they can sell you chemicals. Same as SCA and car batteries.

The Bunnings tests do not test every aspect of the water.
Never heard of a pool shop charging to test water

    • Our local does, if you don't buy chemicals etc from them.

      • I think it's $5, but $10 for Magnesium)

Bunnings crew will have a basic knowledge via training. Not a proper pool shop grasp, but not zero either.
Why not try the Bunnings result VS the pool shop, with water taken to both on the same day and compare the results?
You'll only need to do it once to get a fair idea.

    • Good idea. Thanks

    • Early on after getting a pool we visited four pool shops on a single round trip from home. 'Some' of the results (& dosages suggested) were quite different. Two shops used test strips not unlike most owners would use
      .

      • Do they give you a printout? I'd be asking for one to put a bit more gravitas on their attempt to get it right.

        • print out for the two that used machines, one was hand written results from test strips onto a paper form, last one was a few scribbles on blank paper (this bloke didn't even need to move from his stool at front desk).
I now visit Clark rubber once or twice late spring early summer to compare with the results I get from strips and tablets at home and buy a bag or four of minerals
          .

          • @Nugs: Always been a fan of DIY testing (location impact) but I reckon a pro test/s at the beginning of the process is a good idea so you have a viable 'line in the sand' to begin with.
(If people start dissolving get a pro test again,LOL) There must be so much info these days online, mastering the art should be no dramas for most novices. I guess it's when the starting water is 'unknown' (not mains) it can get tricky.

            • @Protractor: "(If people start dissolving get a pro test again,LOL)"

So far everyone that goes into the pool has been dissolved. That's why I am exploring different options when it comes to testing the pool water….

        • Yes, the printout does show all the values and is easy to follow.

  • I think the Bunnings pool water tester has been working once in the last 8 years of owning a pool and visiting Bunnings quite regularly. I gave up on it and just go to the pool shop now.

    Why use a 3rd party?
I’ve been looking after my own pool for 15 years & have never been into a pool shop to get a test.

    • Convenience mate, that's why😜🥳🤗

    • 2nd this. Once you understand it, its actually very easy to keep a pool in balance and check with DIY testing and Bunnings chemicals.

  • Update:

I tested the water this morning at Bunnings.

They use test strips. The results were not comprehensive.

I will continue to go to the pool shop. So much easier.

Thanks for the replies. Always good to get a second opinion. Thanks

  • Ive found it easier to go to a pool shop. Have some home test strips and do use those occasionally between pool shop tests. Ultimately its wasier to go to a pool shop so i dontnneed any calculations.

  • Much easier. The pool shop printout is so much more comprehensive. The Bunnings report this morning suggested things that the pool shop report did not recommend.
