I'm on a Boost prepaid mobile plan. I'm travelling to Thailand for 2 weeks. If I buy a data esim in Thailand, will I be able to make and receive calls and texts to and from my Australian number, utilising the data on the Thai esim and the voWIFI function?
Thanks!

Just out of interest, is your data sim roaming (eg. most 'travel sims' like Airalo or lots of others) or a 'native' data sim (eg. say TMobile in US or 3UK in the UK?
The reason I ask is that my experience with Boost overseas was that if your sim is native, VoLTE worked fine, but if the sim was roaming, it didn't work until you got to back to hotel wifi, etc.
Right now it’s a travel esim but last year when I was overseas, I had a native data esim but VoLTE didn’t work either. Probably it could be dependant on which country as well.
It's more because of your phone than anything else, iphone and the galaxy series are well documented, the rest especially google phone are hit and miss. Volte can be finicky, even with supported phone you have to be in strong reception area. Also when on roaming travel sim depending on agreement your sim can only roam to the lesser one overseas making it harder to be on volte.
Can you confirm you are using boost or telstra? And which phone make and model
Boost, Pixel 7 Pro.
Ah yes…..never really made the distinction between VoLTE and VoWIFI.
Looks like I'll pick up a Boost Roaming pack.
Thanks Bob.
we have used this in other countries and it worked, you can use other sim mobile data for voice in boost sim in Samsung phones, not sure about others. there is an option in the connectivity menu.
I went to Thailand in 2023. I used a boost sim. I purchased a Thai esim from airalo online and activated it when I flew out of Australia. I used a samsung s23u. This allowed me to make and receive calls on my boost Australian number over the data connection on the Thai sim. It worked flawlessly.
If you buy an esim from airalo be sure to use ozbargain referral system.
It depends on your phone. When using an iPhone it might work. When using an Android phone you most likely are not able to make this work.
So what phone are you using?
Pixel 7 Pro.
It's funny, tried Boost live chat, was told it would work by the first rep and no it wouldn't work by the second rep.
Boost/Telstra WiFi calling using Google Pixel phones is seriously broken. So what you plan on doing on Thailand with this Pixel phone will not work.
Have a look at this topic:

I strongly suggest that you raise a fault with Boost/Telstra about this.

According to this page it should work.
Nop. I don’t believe it would work since that’s VoLTE and not VoWifi. I am currently overseas and I can’t make calls if I am on mobile data but can do when I am connected to any wifi.
