  • Just be aware that these are illegal on most cars due to the overhang. Vic police are enforcing it more now and the fines are pretty high.

    • These ones are particularly long due to the spacing between the bikes also, would be very few cars that are technically legal with it.

The rules really need to be reworked as most racks are over the 60% wheelbase limit on most cars before you even put a bike on there. It's even worse with the vertical racks. With the current rules something like a yaris can legally fit a bigger rack than a hilux.

If you can afford this bike rack extension then you can afford the fine

      • The fine is up to 10 penalty units in Victoria (~$2000)

        • Holy cow what the heck is the logic behind these insane fines

    • Good point. Something to consider for sure. Know anyone personally, or just heard it from others / online?

      For everyone else:
The VIC rules for rear overhang: Sixty per cent of the wheelbase or 3.7 metres, whichever is shorter.

      Vic regulations: https://transport.vic.gov.au/road-rules-and-safety/bicycles/…

  • Honestly the 2 rack version of this is ok, but if you really need to fit 4 bikes, better to fork out for the vertical hanging ones imo.

    • 100% this. You will regret not buying a vertical rack if you regularly carry 4 bikes (which can be had for a comparable price - e.g. https://jbracks.com.au/products/4-bike-rack-slow-fold-strut). The only downsides are weight of the vertical racks and storage space, both of which can be significant.

      • Yeah it’s a tough decision for a cyclist with a family that sometimes want to ride. 95% of the time it’ll be a single bike, so you don’t want to handle a large bike carrier each time, but you need to carry 4+ on the odd occasion.

Roof mounted plus a 4 bike carrier works until you hit the garage roof / low barrier.

Best solution is to live next to someone else with a 4 bike carrier, while having a 1 or 2 bike carrier of your own.
