Pricing for Airconditioning - Does It Sound Right? [Melbourne]

Hi all, happy new year guys! Need your help on this one.

I received a quote for a 6kW Daikin FTXV60WVMA system (one head), with installation, for $3,150 (inc. GST) in Melbourne. Does this sound reasonable?

As part of the quote, I’m also looking to use the Victorian government rebate to remove my ducted gas heating system, which offers a $1,000 rebate.

I noticed the quote includes a $600 charge for Disconnect & Take Away Gas Ducted Heater. Is this typical?

The installer recommended Daikin for its quietness and mentioned it’s the only unit that can fit my 750cm space. The company seems reputable.

Does this pricing sound about right, or could I get it cheaper?

Thanks for any advice!

What were the other 2 quotes?

Why not help people out by giving more information?
How much is the unit itself?
Is it back to back or roof mount or tall ceilings? Is your switchboard up to date or an old fuse board?

Does the $3,150 include the $600 removal? Does it include the rebate?

The aircon unit itself you can price match online easily enough. The cost of install depends on how it's being installed, on the roof, wall mounted, whether the outside unit is adjacent to the inside or needs extra piping, etc.

Same with the heating removal, it depends on the work they're doing. I paid way more than that, but they had to get two people to remove an old as hell gas heater from inside the house, crawl around under the house to remove all the piping and the tip costs for it all.

  • Sorry guys to add more detail.

It'll be downstairs. Kind of back to back installation in the garden.
It'll heating removal is from the roof - 2 story home - they mentioned they will need to lift it out of the roof removing some tiles as - it can't be removed from the man hole.

Other quotes came back a tad bit higher and one a tad bit lower. Most are a bit hard to check.

Btw, you dont have to remove the ducted heater. In my case they simply capped the gas connection to the heater (not property) took photos and left it in there.

But mind you, I don't have tiled roof so it would have been more expensive to take the heater out.

Also, for reference, i spent about $3500 for multi head 3 indoor + 1 outdoor unit but I live in a single storey house so its cheaper.

      • Who did you go through for your install at that price? And which model air con did you go with? My cheapest quote from eastern suburbs of Vic was $4500 for 2 mitsubishi units including decomm gas heater and updating a 15+ yo air con.

  • Pricing sounds about right if it excludes the rebate. If it includes the rebate, it's a bit pricey.

    • in total its 600+3.1 - 1k for rebate.

Dont forget that you get more rebate the higher total kW you're buying.

So consider using installing a higher kW outdoor unit to support multiple indoor units and you will realise the difference is not that much out of pocket.

I once tried to install individual units (1 indoor + 1 outdoor per room) instead of multi head and was told by my installer that govt will only give rebate against 1:1 unit being decommissioned.

So, if i install individual unit pairs for three rooms to replace 1 ducted heater, i will need to pay full price for all the 2 rooms.

But cause i opted for one 13kw (8+2.5+2.5) i get much better rebates with total out of pocket of $3500 and got all three rooms covered because the 13kW multi-head unit is considered a single unit as a 1:1 replacement of my ducted heating.

        • Thanks for that - I'll probably ask them about this. But given the format of my home - It might be difficult installation as I've got a double story.

        • This is the way to go. Obviously double story is more expensive but if you go with 3-4 multisplit system on ground floor only, id expect the prices to start from $3k for Midea brand.

          • @voo123: Downstairs only will be ok for heating, but in summer your upstairs won't be cool.

            • @JIMB0: You’re right, but OP originally wanted 1 split downstairs. So for the price of 1, you can get 3 multi splits installed (brand dependent).

  • Seems rather high, we paid $3200 total for 3 multi-split heads installed and the decommissioning of an old gas ducted heater. Daikin was one of the worst options for rebates, seems like more of an art than a science, it would have cost us more to get 2 heads installed rather than 3.

    • I'll be interested in contacting your installer. Do you mind sharing?

      • Electra Energy, was the second cheapest quote but they seemed far more professional

        • I'll give them a go - Do you mind sharing how much rebate you got and what system they put in and brand?

        • Could you please let me know how Midea performs during summer. Is there any issue heating the room?

          • @BobL: No, if anything it's too effective at cooling, have to set it a few degrees higher than we usually would as it cools down the room in 2 minutes. Mostly our fault for getting an over-sized system though, probably cheaper to have it run for a few minutes every now and then rather than constantly on.

If that price is rebate inclusive, its a rip off. I got a quote for my parents place for 5 multisplits system:
    * 20kw Midea 5head multisplit system $3700 ($9700-$6000 veu rebate). 7 years manufacturers warranty

    *20kw Rinnai 5 head multisplit system $4300 ( $10,300- $6000 veu rebate). 7 years warranty

*18kw Panasonic 5 head multisplit system $7500 ( $11,100-$3,600 veu rebate). 5 years manufacturers warranty.

Fujitsu, Mitsubishi prices were higher than Panasonic so I didnt bother to get a formal quote.

Modern switchboard, single story, simple install behind external wall. You dont need the gas ducted heating removed. What companies do is cap the gas line and drill a hole through the pcb motherboard, take a pic to upload to government to claim the rebate back. If you insist on removal, then $600 is totally reasonable.

Obviously 3 or 4 multiple split system will be cheaper.

    • Thanks for the info, we're looking at a 21kW Midea with 5 heads at the moment, waiting on final pricing. We need a couple of drainage pumps due to locations so that will be a little extra. What you've said is in the ballpark of what we've been quoted. Do you know what provider? I'm thinking of seeking a second quote, I'm getting a quote from electrifymeau.com.au.

      • The quotes were from Wegreen. We went with Midea and no issues thus far

      • +1

Have you finaliled this yet? Everything I have read screams no condensate pumps, seems like no one can make one that doesn't fail.

I am in same situation as you as I want them on internal walls, also consider you can put them on an internal wall but right next to an outside wall, sure it looks crap because it's not centered on the wall but you hopefully won't have issues. I have no problem paying $300 extra so it can look nice and centered on the wall but also not worth having drain issues.

The 21kw Midea I believe is the VRF system, which I would avoid for the following reasons:
        - Since it has variable refriderant flow, all the indoor units are linked together so pressure runs through the line to every unit. If you have a unit turned off you will apparently hear noises coming from the unit (the noise of refridgerant flowing through). Whereas the MULMI0618B has independant lines going to each head unit so no clicking
        - The VRF system does not have wifi so you can only control it through the remotes unless you upgrade it to have a wall controller
        - The VRF system only has vertical vanes, you cannot control airflow horizontally unlike the Venus heads you would get with the MULMI0618B

  • I am in eastern suburb. Installed a zena daikin last year with switchboard upgrade. Costed me 2500 with rebate.

    • multi head or single? And that included the removal of the ducted gas?
