One Way Flight from Europe to Melbourne

I'm fortunate to have a cruise booked ex Melbourne in March 2025.

The ship disembarks at Barcelona in May, and I'll spend a couple or three weeks having a goosey gander. At this point I don't have a return airport selected.

What I do know is that Webjet etc charge a thousand dollars and more for each one-way ticket from (for example) Paris to Melbourne. For credit card travel insurance I must have a return ticket. Otherwise travel insurance cost is $4k or more.

Can you please recommend a place where I can buy a reasonably priced air ticket or a hack. I'm interested in what you might suggest for an itinerary for my land trip.

Cheers.

Don't forget to check if you need a VISA.
The requirements are changing in 2025.

No bold and a helpful comment!?

You're a few hours early for your new years resolution

    • All ports are Visa free

That's nothing. I'm fortunate enough to have enough money to see me out for the rest of the year without working.

For credit card travel insurance I must have a return ticket.

Can you check with your credit card insurance if the cruise counts as an outbound segment? If so, the flight would be considered the return and you should be covered.

    • I agree, I’ve always interpreted the rules as you need to have a ticket to return to Australia for the insurance to be valid

      • In all cases that I am aware of this is true!

I wonder what the cheapest return ticket to Australia from anywhere would be. Maybe an LCC from Bali to Darwin? Anybody beat that?

        • How much is the ticket? I saw $450 Sydney to Bali return.

Just open up a credit card and book it using points for free.

  • Try Google flights? I tried Paris to Melbourne on 15 May, the cheapest flights will be $829 but 40+ hours of flights with 3 transits and most likely extra again on checked baggage. Singapore Airlines at $1200+ is not bad for 21+ hours of flight, transit in Singapore most likely and includes checked baggage.

    • I tried Paris to Melbourne on 15 May

Same date, Rome to Bangkok is ~$710 on ITA Airways. 11hr direct flight
Bangkok to Melbourne next day for under $300 if you're prepared to fly Scoot

      = ~$1010 at the cheapest

        Whats wrong with that?

        Sounds cheap to me

    • Return flight Melb to Paris is around $1400

I can see some $600 on Scoot in May out of Athens. Flight from Paris to Athens is about $120.

Try poke around on google flights for a while.

Once you add the bags Scoot won't be much cheaper (if at all). And you'll have to pay extra for the food and their seats at the back are horrible for such a long journey. And you risk missing the connection in Athens. Definitely wouldn't consider the 3-transit option (via Tajikistan?).

If you are really keen to go with the cheapest option, you could fly out of Paris on 20 March or 31 March for $856 on Xiamen Air with a 16 hour layover in Xiamen…

My personal preference would be Singapore Airlines. $1200 is really not a bad price. Other good options might be Etihad and Thai.

China Eastern and Air India might be slightly cheaper but they're generally considered much less pleasant to fly with.

    • I was going to recommend Athens. It's one of the cheapest EU exit points especially coming back to Melbourne.

Having a quick look. Out of Athens

June 4th - Scoot obviously cheapest at $868 with a long layover in SIN.

However, if you book the legs separately (Athens to Singapore then to Melbourne and transfer yourself (ie, stay a day or 2), that cost can drop to $660.

Around the same time, for the $1000 mark, you can exit Rome etc on Chinese airlines.

At anytime, you can exit most ports with top tier airlines for $1200+

      There are some exceptions -

      June 4th

      Ex Barcelona

Ethihad via Abu Dhabi to Melbourne for $1099

Travel around, go back to Barcelona and get that flight home. Better than Scoot

Avoid routes anywhere near where Trumps bestie Putin is claiming he's not shooting down planes.

    • According to that logic, I'd pick Etihad (or Qatar or Emirates).

      • Not like there's no previous form.

The response varies from, "it wasn't us" to
" we do apologise, but we had nothing to do with it. Honest

  • Search for a Multi city flight using google flights

The best part of Spain to visit is Andalucía in the south - Granada, Cordoba, Seville, Ronda, Malaga, etc. Don't leave Barcelona without visiting the Sagrada Familia, a project that has blown out like a Victorian infrastructure project - 142 years and counting.

Milan is a good exit point, lots of sub $1k options with Singapore (cheaper if you do a day stopover in SIN)

    • I'll have a look.

  • Have you tried getting other travel insurance quotes? $4k seems high. You can get annual policies with Travel Insurance Direct (TID) which are quite reasonable.

    • Mastercard insurance gives the same policy benefits as the private insurers.
Westpac card services use Allianz, the trip must be paid by Mastercard and be at least $500 in value.
Private travel insurance was at least $4k, some quotes up to $6k.

Mastercard insurance gives the same policy benefits as the private insurers.

        Mastercard is also private.

Mastercard does not offer cardholders any insurance.

Private travel insurance was at least $4k, some quotes up to $6k.

        All insurance is private.
