Should I Buy RAM Now or Wait Later?

Recently ordered the mini ITX build from Techfast for $688 opting for 1tb storage for an extra $49. I kept the RAM at 16gb hoping that sometime down the line I'd find a good deal on RAM and buy 32 gb as I'm in no rush (Techfast is pretty slow in delivering their products).

I was recommended the 32gb Corsair Vengeance 3200MHz on Amazon for $82 as its on sale, but I don't know if I should grab this deal pre-emptively or wait for a better deal to come by? I saw that there was a 3600MHz version of that same ram that was posted just last month.

Q: When Should I Buy RAM
    A: when you need it

  • After the election?

as others suggested … wait until you ACTUALLY need it.
being a "mini ITX" build" … obviously not a "work-horse" type of build … but perhaps need a quieter sort of build.

What is your actual use case ???

if just general browsing + email + or even "a HT setup" … then 8 GB memory == perfectly fine.
(heck - I have a comp with 4GB memory - running Win 10 … which use for email/browsing +++ even light website editing).

    • A mix of gaming and general browsing. I'm planning on playing AAA games like elden ring at 1080p so wasn't sure if 16gb would be enough.

      • ok. well that changes things … athough using a mini ITX setup for AAA games is almost unheard of.
Which GFX card did you go with ???

you REALLY should have stated that in your OP.

I guess without any context I just wanted to know if the current 32gb corsair ram deal on amazon is a good deal or will there be even better deals down the line?

          • @Bonemusher: i can't seem to locate the EXACT setup/deal that you purchased … for $688

as you originally stated (even looking at different "snapshots" of website … (I can't see the deal at that price).

            [EDIT] : sold out.

No, where did you get that from? Check out r/sffpc

How many ram slots does your mb have? How many are currently occupied?

I'm guessing 2 and both. So you'll have to get rid of what you have currently and get new.

Why not simply change your order to get 32gb now?

Ah, the person here who saw what the problem with buying 16GB now and upgrading to 32GB later. ITX boards almost always only have 2 slots, so to upgrade to 32GB later doesn't just require buying another 16GB, you have to buy another 32GB. The only way that ends up cheaper is if RAM more than halves in price.

That said, if the OP is using 3200 MHz RAM, its old DDR4 RAM, and there's the chance of getting cheap used RAM as lots of machines that use DDR4 are replaced. I upgraded a bunch of DDR4 machines recently to more and faster RAM by buying cheap used 8GB and 16GB 3200 MHz RAM. So now I have a literal heap of 4GB RAM sticks of various lower speeds.

  • Wait and see how it plays with 16gb if its maxing out get the 32gb…

    • Do i check if it's maxing out through task manager?

      • Yes run what you normally run and open task manager and switch to it, or use the nvidea overlay might display ram usage

it gets cheaper every year, so best to wait for 100 years to get the best deal.

      Patience saves cents. Cheers

32GB prolly expensive in 100 years - collectors item.

    • Have you looked at the prices of 512kB sticks ?!?!

  • 16GB is still fine for gaming

    DDR4 will only get cheaper

When you do upgrade sell off your old 8GB sticks

I thought you were asking if you should buy a big Dodge truck.
I would have said when you need it.
